Brownells Gun Tech™ Caleb Savant gives up a little love for one of the least-understood parts of the AR-15 rifle. No, he's already explained the forward assist.... We're talking about the DUST COVER over the ejection port! The dust cover is there to prevent dirt, debris, and dust from getting into the firearm's action while you're carrying it or transporting it. When you're actually shooting the rifle, the force of the ejection gases will keep dust and dirt out of the action. The military needs the dust cover on their M16s and M4s because of the dusty environments they may be operating in, like Iraq and Afghanistan. The semi-auto AR-15 is not the exact same gun, but it does have an exposed bolt carrier, too, hence a dust cover is included on most civilian ARs. For sport and competition AR-15 shooters, the dust cover is probably not strictly necessary. But it's there if you need it. In fact, the Kalashnikov AK-47 / AK-74 series of rifles actually has TWO dust covers, one on top of the receiver and the selector lever actually serves as a dust cover. Check out our earlier Smyth Busters video, "Is the AR-15's Dust Cover Really Necessary?" And if we've stimulated your interest, "Does the AR-15 REALLY Need a Forward Assist?" The same in Iraq. It's hard packed till you walk on or drive on ,then it turns to fine moon dust. Unless rhino snoot was poured over it

Your covering covers just about covers it.

These are all lies. Anyone with a brain knows the dust cover is made to stop cheese from spoiling

It is unnecessary weight. Grams make ounces, ounces make pounds, pounds make tons. When you have to carry your rifle up hill, all day, both ways you will be glad you removed that cumbersome useless item.

I would've thought being around humvees or tanks FLICKING DIRT UP would REALLY NECESSITATE a dust cover and make it brutally obvious of it's real world use.

I just don't understand how a "dust cover" is not self explanatory.

If someone thinks a dust cover is useless they have never used a firearm outside of a range.

Now that you said the dust cover is a military feature the Democrats will use it to ban ARs as they use the pistol grip and flash hiders.🎉

Can't believe you would need to make a video to explain what a dust cover is for.

"Dust" is a misnomer. It's more of a DEBRIS cover. In a very dirty environment, muddy environment or wet environment with debris in water being traversed, the cover keeps the receiver fairly free of crud. Upon first round fired, most of any schmutz or crud that leaked in around the cover is blown out by the gas impingement system. I see "range queens" without covers all the time and that's fine for a weapon that lives in a case and never sees a dirty day. I'll keep mine since it is exposed to the great outdoors!

This is actually a nice and needed explaination, as most of the gun don't have bolt carrier dust cover like the AR, and modern gun after SCAR don't even have charging handle, like the AK

People who say a dust cover isn't needed are the same people who say they don't need to wear a seatbelt. Yes under normal use you probably don't need to wear your seatbelt to safely reach your destination. But if it comes to the rare chance you do need it for your safety it's too late to put it on at that point. Same here, a dust cover probably doesn't help keep debris out when it's exposed to very little in the first place but it will significantly reduce the amount of dust and debris that gets in the firearm when it is exposed to a lot. dust covers and seatbelts are not in any way a detriment to the firearm or vehicle and invaluable in specific conditions. Having and using both all the time is all ways a good idea.

The dust cover worked on moon dust in Iraq too! Most troops spend more time carrying a weapon than they do firing it.

Could you do one on a gun case?
I got this vaguely gun shaped bag like thing when I bought a gun.
No idea what it's for.
