But after a decades long civil war, fishermen returned to find their fish stocks depleted – and they pointed the finger squarely at neighboring India. As Indian fishermen developed methods to increase hauls, and crossed a maritime border that was more permeable during the war, they depleted the fish stock for both sides. Now, the Sri Lankan Navy is retaliating with force, only making the relationship between the two communities that rely on these waters worse. This Vox Borders episode will look at how the drawing of a maritime border and lack of access to fish caused a conflict between two communities that used to live in harmony. For the record. Prawn are typically found in Fresh water and have tails which cannot curl. (there are other significant differences like claws and legs) Shrimp are typically found in salt water and have tails that can completely curl. All the pics you showed were shrimp. FYI
Hearing Tamil amid English is indescribable ☺️☺️
Sometimes srilankan navy detains Indian fisherman illegally
The indian trawlers practice the extremely destructive technique called bottom trawling which completely destroys the coral reefs that help all the fish breed. This region is one of the richest regions in terms of marine life. It has the only breeding colony on non migrating blue whales in the planet because its so rich in food.
The indian trawlers are destroying the entire ecosystem and the livelihoods of their tamil counterparts in Sri Lanka who have already suffered a terrible war.
This region is a treasure to both india and Sri Lanka. Unsustainable fishing practices must be stopped.
I am a Sri Lankan tamil, even though I have no expertise in translation, I presume that it doesn't prerequisite virtuosity to act as a translator of colloquial tamil, or as a critique of the subtitled translation. I wouldn't remark that your translation is meaningless, but imprecise and somewhat uninformative. For instance, in the course of the video, a Sri Lankan man alleges that Indian fishermen damage their fishing lines, but it's being subtitled as "they trouble us so much."
1. Make net wall between border
3. Both fisherman can enter boarder
4. Suvilance by drones
What is that very tall structure seen at WesrJBgEmyw&t=3m27s 3:27
They (the Indian government) should compensate the Sri Lankans for their their thief and supply them with boats free of charge! This would put any animosity that exist today behind them.
WesrJBgEmyw&t=8m13s 8:13 your welcome
on this fish war, i will have to side with sri lanka... its their water!
Now U.S and U.K has the opportunity to train and arm the Sri Lanka army if India ever decides to join Russia and China to use them. India is in so much trouble because of Pakistan/Taliban from one direction, Nepali soldiers trained by U.K from another direction and Sri Lanka from another side.
Untill the British conquered india the bat of bengal was called the chola mandalam sea or coramandel coast as named by the British.
Chola kingdom dominated the east coast of india, rthis is the very reason for tamil nadu state to have large fishermen folks. Democratic india cannot take way the rights of native fishermen in the name of boundaries and law.
Indians have a bad reputation of pilfering others' resources. I want to thank Vox for giving some light to this issue.
Do a video about fish's , what they think. How fish lives effect from this conflict
I didn't even knew about it. I want to say SORRY to my Sri Lankan friends. Indian govt should act on such illegal activity.
Mind your own business racist

Crossing border is illegal 😞. What Sri Lanka NAVY did was correct. If indian fishermens and government can manage this it will be great 😊. We are small nation and under developing. Please give them to utilize their own resource. We expect indian development as friendly country. Conflict is bad. Peace 🕊️✌️ is so nice 🙂
As a Indian Tamil - this is an eye opener for me. Indian media talks about indian side of the story. They always say Sri Lanka navy is bad, never talk about what our fishermen had done
