We’ll discuss the basics of how they work. A thermocouple is an extremely simple device used to measure temperature. Thermocouples tend to be inexpensive, durable, and can be fabricated into a variety of shapes and sizes. A thermocouple is made up of two dissimilar metal wires. The metal wires are connected together in only one place, typically the tip of the thermocouple. Lots of manufacturers call that junction by different names. Hot Junction, Measurement Junction, Sensing Point, or Sensing Junction. Those terms all refer to the same thing… the place where the dissimilar metals are joined that will measure the temperature. The wires at the opposite end from the sensing junction are then left available to connect to some kind of measuring instrument like a temperature transmitter, a simple electronic display unit, or even directly to a PLC thermocouple input card. The wiring terminals on the measuring instrument are most often called the Cold Junction. While the Hot Junction refers to the tip of the thermocouple that will be exposed to the heat source of interest, the cold junction refers to the thermocouple wire connections that happen right at the measuring instrument, which typically is not exposed to the same thermal energy. All thermocouples work the same way. They generate a small voltage when they are exposed to heat. If you’re interested in the detailed physics of the way this works, you can research topics like The Thermoelectric Effect, or The Seebeck Effect, but to put things in simpler terms, when you heat up a piece of metal, the electrons in the metal want to move around more and will tend to move through the metal away from the heat. Because electrons are negatively charged, the colder end of the piece of metal will have a negative charge compared to the hotter end. A thermocouple works based on the movement of the electrons in its metal wires due to the heat difference between the hot and cold junctions. If the two wires of the thermocouple were made up of the same type of metal, electrons in both wires would move away from the heat at roughly the same rate, so you couldn’t really measure the difference in the charge of the two wires. The different metals in those wires, or more accurately the electrons in those different metal wires, react differently to heat. When exposed to heat, the electrons from one of the wires will want to move around at a certain rate. The electrons from the other wire will want to move around at a different rate. – The wire that has the electrons that move more ends up being more negatively charged at the cold junction… and will therefore be called the negative wire lead. – The wire with the slower electrons won’t build up as much of a charge, so it’s called the positive wire lead. That difference in charge between the positive and negative wire leads can be measured and used to calculate the heat at the hot junction. This difference in charge, also called a voltage, can be measured. The more heat you apply to the metal wires, the more the electrons want to move around, and the more they move away from the heat. With the two different types of metal wire, the difference in the voltage will increase and decrease with changes in heat at the sensing point. A Type-K thermocouple is probably the most commonly used thermocouple in industrial applications because it responds predictably across a very wide range of temperatures. RTDs are a class of sensors that change resistance when the temperature of the medium they are inserted into changes. This change of resistance is proportional to temperature and varies in a somewhat linear fashion with temperature. It is due entirely to the physical properties of the material from which the RTD is constructed. While RTDs can be manufactured from many metals, including nickel and copper, platinum exhibits physical properties that make it ideal for use in RTD temperature sensors. 1) Platinum is a basic element, with the chemical symbol, Pt. That is the first part of the designation of the Pt100 RTD. Platinum has a molecular weight of 195, which makes it a rather heavy metal with free electrons to make it a good conductor of electricity, although not as good as copper or silver. 2) Platinum exhibits an electrical resistance that varies in a nearly linear fashion with temperature and has a resistance of exactly 100.00 ohms at zero degrees Celsius. This is where the second part of the designation Pt100 comes from. 3) Another property of platinum that makes it highly valuable to temperature measurement is that it is quite inert. It does not react with other compounds to any great extent. The most common Pt100 RTD used in industry is one that changes resistance at the rate of about 0.385 ohms for every degree Celsius rise in temperature. The “385” factor comes from the equation that approximates the resistance of an RTD based on its physical properties. The equation relates the resistance of the RTD at the temperature being measured to the resistance at zero degrees Celsius. The coefficient alpha in this equation describes the rate of change of resistance with temperature. The Pt100 RTD is often referred to as the Pt100 (385) RTD. There are platinum RTD’s that exhibit different values of alpha, and those would be designated with their respective alpha values, such as with the Pt100 (391) sensor. The equation is only approximate, so to know the true temperature at any measured resistance, we will need to consult a published standard table of resistance for a Pt100 (385) sensor. You can find the link to this table here: 🤍 A Pt100 RTD is typically constructed by winding a thin platinum wire around a non-conductive core which helps support the thin wire. The entire assembly is encased in a sheath to protect the sensor and to give it stability. In industrial applications, RTDs are commonly placed inside protective metal tubes called thermowell. The length of the RTD and the design of the thermowell are design parameters determined by the instrument engineer. PT100 RTDs can be constructed from a single platinum wire, giving a sensor with two leads. These leads can be connected to a special I/O card designed to accept RTD inputs, or the leads can be connected to a temperature transmitter, which will output a standard 4-20 mA signal. In order to determine the resistance of the RTD, a special bridge circuit is used, called a Wheatstone bridge. This 2-wire RTD design is not very accurate because the platinum leads themselves have an electrical resistance due to the length of the wire and the connection points, in addition to the resistance from the temperature detected at the point of measurement. To compensate for this added resistance, a second platinum wire is added to the sensor at a third lead. Flame arresters are designed to allow the flow of gases, liquids, etc. and to prevent flame transmission. PROTEGO® Flame Arresters are composed of individual FLAMEFILTER® (flame arrester discs). Several FLAMEFILTER® plus spacers and an enclosing cage form the flame arrester. The FLAMEFILTER® is made of wound corrugated metal strips. The principle of flame quenching in small gaps is applied in PROTEGO® end-of-line flame arresters and PROTEGO® in-line flame arresters. When a mixture ignites in a gap between two walls, the flame spreads towards the non-combusted mixture. The expansion in volume of the combusted mixture pre-compresses the noncombusted mixture and accelerates the flame. By heat dissipation in the boundary layer “s”, transferring it to the large surface of the gap-length compared to the gap-width “D” and cooling-down the product below its ignition temperature the flame is extinguished. The gap width and the gap length of the flame arrester disc determines its extinguishing ability.The narrower and longer the gap, the greater the extinguishing effectiveness. The wider and shorter the gap, the lower the pressure loss. The optimum solution between the two conditions is determined by experiments.

The three-phased asynchronous motors are considered the most reliable electrical machines, since they can work for many years, with very little need for maintenance. Jaes, for over a decade, has been providing its customer with the best solution for their supply chain and in their catalogue you can find any type of asynchronous motor from the leading manufacturers. Let’s now disassemble a real motor to see how it’s composed: its external surface is finned, and there is a cooling fan directly connected to the crankshaft. The fan (thanks to the shape of its cover) makes the air flow into the fins, in order to dissipate more easily the heat that the motor develops during its functioning. In the upper part, there’s the terminal box, where the clamps are located and to which the power cables will be connected. The latter can be connected in a three-phase electric-powered star or delta system according to the necessities. By removing the end shields, the crankshaft and the rotor can be extracted from the external casing. In the stator (which generates the rotating magnetic field) are placed the brass coils, which are separated from each other by the ducts of ferromagnetic material; several plastic elements electrically isolate the reels in order to avoid short circuits. Inside the rotor (in which the rotating magnetic field is induced) we can clearly distinguish the almost horizontal lines, which are created from the squirrel cage, and the vertical ones that are made by foil layers. Finally, we find the bearings, which by holding on the crankshaft and on the end shields, make the rotor to stay perfectly at the center of the stator winding and to rotate with minimal friction. Stator and rotor are separated from each other just by tenths of a millimeter so that the forces of attraction can be as effective as possible. The electricity is induced on the rotor thanks to electromagnetic induction, and not from a direct electrical connection. That’s why this motor is also called “ induction motor”. Besides, the rotor is never going to reach the speed of the magnetic field, but instead, it’s going to rotate with a specific speed which must be inferior to the synchronous velocity; This explains why it’s also called the asynchronous motor. The centrifugal force that results from the rotation then causes sedimentation of the solids on the wall of the bowl. The conveyor rotates in the same direction as the bowl, but slightly slower, thus moving the solids towards the conical end of the bowl. The cake leaves the bowl through the solids discharge openings into the casing. Separation takes place throughout the entire length of the cylindrical part of the bowl, and the clarified liquid leaves the bowl by flowing over adjustable plate dams into the casing.
