Today’s Prime Time is about River Ganga and the degrading ecosystem of the state of Uttarakhand from where the river originates. Successive state governments have been callous towards protecting the natural environment and have not declared important regions as eco-sensitive zones. According to reports, the locals have been instigated into protesting against declaring zones in which their homes fall in as eco-sensitive because that would cripple their development. In a gazette notification in 2012, the Centre had declared the stretch of Bhagirathi between Gaumukh and Uttarkashi as eco-sensitive zone or ESZ leading to disagreements between the Centre and the state government. Prime Time With Ravish Kumar - May 21, 2021: Environmental activist Sundarlal Bahuguna, a pioneer of the Chipko Movement against deforestation in the 1970s, died in Uttarakhand this afternoon. He was 94 years old. His death was declared by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh where he was admitted for Covid treatment, ANI reported. Mr Bahuguna died at 12.05 pm AIIMS Rishikesh Director Ravikant said. One of India's best-known environmentalists, was admitted to the hospital on May 8 after testing positive for Covid. His condition turned critical last night, with his oxygen level dropping drastically. He was on CPAP therapy in the hospital's ICU. In this special report, we investigate how hundreds of villages in Uttarakhand have been turned into 'ghost' villages following mass migration of residents towards greener pastures. NDTV visits some of the remote regions of Pauri Garhwal where we find there are villages which house barely a dozen or less people, mainly senior citizens. Senior journalist Arvind Mudgal says that villagers in Uttarakhand find it difficult to sustain a livelihood using traditional methods of farming and are slowly abandoning the profession. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has drafted a fresh EIA notification, 2020, which will replace the EIA notification of 2006. The draft considers as ecologically sensitive only those areas that are notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. This excludes places like reserve forest, sacred groves, wetlands coasts and flood plains. Some of the provisions in the draft notification have met with opposition from several quarters. Uttarayini, an organisation of class 1 officers of Uttarakhand organised a significant seminar of Joshimath's crucial situation at Uttarakhand Sad and Chanakyapuri on 29 th January 2023, to contribute their bit in the national capital attended by eminent seismologists, earth scientists and experts who also spoke on the occasion expressing their serious concern and remedial measures to set right the situation in whatever way they can. Former Uttar Pradesh chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi is likely to join the BJP for the next Assembly election . Sources close to her said Joshi is upset with the party for having projected an "outsider" in Sheila Dikshit as CM candidate. Joshi had led the party in the last assembly polls in the state in which Congress came a poor fourth. On the night of Diwali, the six-year-old had gone to play with other children on the terrace of her house when her dress caught fire due to firecrackers. Due to the noise of crackers, nobody could hear her cries, later she was found in a burnt condition by someone. She was immediately rushed to a private hospital for treatment but succumbed to the injuries. The girl had suffered 60 per cent burns when she was spotted. She was immediately shifted to a private hospital for initial treatment and was to be treated at Delhi Military Hospital later. She was to be shifted to Delhi via air ambulance but died even before she could be brought to Delhi. MP Rita Joshi spoke to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and UP CM Yogi Adityanath for the treatment of her granddaughter. Watch the video for more details. Corona virus continues to wreak havoc in the country. One after the other, many people have lost their lives in the grip of it. On Friday, famous environmentalist Sundar Lal Bahuguna died due to corona. He was Corona positive and was being treated at Rishikesh AIIMS. पंचेश्वर बांध, हिमालय में अब तक के सबसे ऊंचे बांध को बनाने की तैयारी हो रही है. हिमालय से निकलने वाली कई नदियों का पानी साथ लेकर बहने वाली एक विशाल नदी महाकाली यानी शारदा को बांधने की तैयारी है. बिजली, सिंचाई और बाढ़ से रोकथाम के नाम पर बन रहा 5040 मेगावॉट क्षमता का यह बांध 315 मीटर की ऊंचाई के साथ दुनिया में दूसरा सबसे ऊंचा बांध होगा. रूस के 335 मीटर ऊंचे रोगुन बांध के बाद सबसे ऊंचा बांध. पंचेश्वर बांध की लागत लगातार विवादों में रहे टिहरी बांध से पांच गुना ज़्यादा होगी और उससे क़रीब तीन गुना ज़्यादा बड़े इलाके के डूबने की ये वजह बनेगा. टिहरी बांध ने एक ऐतिहासिक टिहरी शहर समेत क़रीब 52 वर्ग किलोमीटर इलाका पानी में डुबाया जबकि पंचेश्वर बांध में क़रीब 134 वर्ग किलोमीटर इलाका पानी में डूबने को अभिशप्त होगा.
