This video shows from small worms to cocoon. Here is a video of a moth emerging from the cocoon: 🤍 And finally, moths mating: 🤍 🤍 Recap of the silkworm/moth lifecycle: Starting from tiny eggs from the previous year, about 1 mm in diameter, hatch tiny little black thread-like worms 1-2mm long. The worms only eat Mulberry tree leaves, and over about 4 weeks, grow fat and plump to a size similar to an adult middle finger. Then over several days they spin cocoons around them from their saliva which becomes a continuous strand of silk over a mile long. In captivity, one of two things happens next. In order to harvest and use the long unbroken silk strand, the moth inside must be killed, typically by boiling. (I don't do that!) The alternative is to let the moths emerge after about 2 weeks. The act of the moth emerging from the cocoon effectively breaks the single silk strand into many short pieces, making it much less valuable and useful. Domesticated silk moths are not capable of flight, though they may beat their wings furiously as they walk around or mate. After mating, female moths will lay hundreds of eggs before dying within a few days. If stored in a cool place the eggs will stay unhatched until the next spring, when we can again enjoy this ~7 week diversion and give away as many worms as interested neighbors want... For almost five thousand years, people have raised silkworms for their unique, shimmering material. In just a few days, these caterpillars produce one fine thread of silk one kilometer long, and intricately weave it into their cocoons. For most silkworms in captivity, this is where their journey ends. To preserve the integrity of the continuous silk thread in each cocoon, silk farmers kill the pupa inside the chrysalis by boiling, steam, or sun. Then the strands are loosened in hot water and unwound by hand using specialized spinners and silk harvesting tools. This raw silk is then gathered onto large spools and refined into commercially valuable threads. It can take up to 2000 silkworms to make one silk dress. Silkworms are enjoyed as a nutritious snack in many countries, including Thailand, Vietnam, China and Madagascar. – Where do wild silk moths live? In order to understand the method of obtaining silk from silkworm, it is essential to understand the lifecycle of a silkworm. In this video, we will be learning about the lifecycle of a silkworm. The lifecycle of silkworm starts when a female silk moth lays its eggs on the leaves of a mulberry tree. These eggs then hatch into larvae. These larvae are known as caterpillars. The caterpillars are voracious eaters; they keep munching on the mulberry leaves for days together and grow in size. This stage is followed by the pupal stage, where the caterpillars weave a layer of silk around their body and get enclosed by it. This structure is called the pupa. The layer of silk surrounding the pupa is known as the cocoon. The pupa is the one from which we get silk. The pupa then develops inside the cocoon and emerges as an adult by breaking open the cocoon.
Since late 2019, we had spent 3 months raising and filming silkworms, and managed to capture the whole process of their complete metamorphosis. It was fantastic to see how a silkworm developed from an egg to larva, pupa, and finally to an adult moth. Science Project/Science Experiments Life cycle of a silk worm or silk moth The life cycle of the silk moth has several stages from egg to adult moth over a period of about six to eight weeks. Let us learn about various stages of the life cycle of the silk moth. Stage 1: The female silk moth lays tiny eggs. Satge 2. The eggs will begin to hatch about two weeks after being laid. A tiny caterpillar comes out when the egg hatches. These tiny caterpillar are called silkworm or Larva Stage 3: The silkworm feeds on mulberry leaves and grows bigger within three to four weeks. Stage 4: The caterpillar then secretes a fibre made of protein which hardens when exposed to air. The caterpillar weaves the fibre around itself through figure of eight movement of head forming a cocoon. Stage 5: The caterpillar takes three to seven days to prepare the cocoon. Inside the cocoon the caterpillar changes into a pupa. Stage 6:. A few weeks later the cocoon opens and an adult moth come out. Silk threads are obtained from the cocoon of silkworm. Hi friends, The Life cycle of a silkworm consists of 4 stages the 4 stages are : Stage 1: Egg An egg is the first stage of the life cycle of the silkworm. The egg is laid by a female moth. Stage 2: Silkworm A hairy silkworm arises after the eggs crack. In this stage of silkworms, the growth happens. Stage 3: Cocoon In this stage, silkworms spin a protective cocoon around itself. It is the size of a small cotton ball. Stage 4: Pupa The pupa stage is a motionless stage. In this stage, people kill the pupa by plunging the cocoon into boiling water and unwind the silk thread. Stage 5: Moth In this stage, the pupa changes into an adult moth. The female moth lays eggs after mating and thus the life cycle of silkworm begins again.
