9/21 This video is part of a series of educational videos on flintknapping for ANTH 3201 Lithic Analysis taught by Dr. Julie Cormack at Mount Royal University. These videos were produced by the Media Production Team at MRU. The conceptual idea and project organization came from Julie Cormack. In this video, archaeologist Jason Roe shows the process of pressure flaking to make a biface, using a white-tailed deer tine, and of making notches using a piece of cut antler on black obsidian.
Tom Strong demonstrates various pressure flaking techniques to create perfect flaking patterns with a nice domed shape. With grinding or not a nice domed arrow-head with a good flake scar pattern can be achieved from a slabbed preform.
The final in this series, showing how to put a fine, serrated edge on the spearhead with pressure flaking. This could also be a dagger if it were hafted onto a short piece of wood, bone, or antler.

Flintknapping 101 - Pressure Flake (Episode 7) On this episode I share the basics of pressure flaking, and break down multiple different methods. Pressure flaking is an important step in Flintknapping. Often done last in large scale stone tool production, however I routinely pressure flake throughout most stone tool creations. Arrowheads, axes, atlatl dart points...its a continues process. This is the basic method and is for those first time Knappers. Some Knappers use copper and modern tools, and that's totally fine...grow where you are planted. I keep it simple and only use what could be collected in the natural environment. The Flintknapping kit I used in this video is the same one I sell on my Paleo Tracks Survival Website. Also, October 23/24, 2021 I will be teaching an Ancestral Skills Workshop at the one and only Side Notch Acres in New Mexico. Details and registration at the Paleo Tracks Survival webpage. this isn't really a video for people trying to figure out how to do perfect parallel flaking, etc. it's more of a video about how to easily get a thick slab pressure-flaked into a point preform with a bit of convexity and no problems on it. i tried to talk about the things beginners having problems complain about most in online forums. anyway...a picture of the finished point was added at the end.

1968, BLADES AND PRESSURE FLAKING, produced for the Anthropology Dept at UC Berkeley, demonstrations by Francois Bordes and Don Crabtree, written and directed by Clyde B. Smith. The film explores the various materials, techniques and tools used by ancient man in the crafting of his everyday and specialized cutting tools.
Tutorial on how to pressure flake a stone hand blade. Pressure Flaking is the last step in the flintknapping process and is used to re-sharpen the edge of a stone blade or point. The hand blade is made of Dacite and is being sharpened before heading out on a primitive hunt. The hand blade is an essential element for processing small game and other tasks. Having ones knife ready for use and maintaining a sharp edge was a practice thousands of years ago as well as today.
The question I see most often is, "how do you remove long flakes with a pressure flaker?" In this video I will show you how with abo tools.

Listen to me poorly knap some dacite. (Not meant as an educational video; I'm not great) _ I've been teaching myself to flintknap. While I occasionally get some pointers from my friends Evan Phillips and Donny Dust, I'm mostly on my own. I figured I'd document my progress and record some ASMR along the way. I often like to fall asleep to the sound of flintknapping myself, so I put the Zoom H4N down by my feet to catch the falling debris. I'll do a better camera angle next time! I'm learning, so if you have any pointers on where I messed up or where I could improve, let me know! Website: 🤍 Patreon: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 Podcast: 🤍 Merch: 🤍 Discord: 🤍
Of particular interest to me is the way he applies pressure into the glass, and then uses his knee "like a vice" to create transverse pressure to remove the flake.

I thought I would share some of the techniques I use to pressure flake a glass arrowhead. I know it would have been better if I had a closer view but once again I wanted you to see what I see when I do this and to explain why I do it this way. Thanks to volcanicglass11 for the cool piece of beautiful glass to work. I hope you find this video helpful. I didn't show every flake coming off because that would get really boring, but I did show the progress each stage produced.
Dr Nina Kononenko demonstrates the refining process of flake production using the pressure flaking technique.
