He notes that while we use the word "time" frequently in everyday language, the real puzzles arise when we consider the properties of time, such as the past, present, and future, and the fact that we can affect the future but not the past. Carroll also discusses the concept of entropy, which is a measure of how disorganized or random a system is, and the second law of thermodynamics, which states that there is a natural tendency for things in the universe to go from a state of low entropy to high entropy. He explains that the arrow of time, or the perceived difference between the past and the future, arises due to the influence of the Big Bang and the fact that the universe began in a state of low entropy. Carroll also touches on the possibility of time travel and the concept of the multiverse. Most of his career has been spent doing research on cosmology, field theory, and gravitation, looking at topics such as dark matter and dark energy, modified gravity, topological defects, extra dimensions, and violations of fundamental symmetries. These days, his focus has shifted to more foundational questions, both in quantum mechanics (origin of probability, emergence of space and time) and statistical mechanics (entropy and the arrow of time, emergence and causation, dynamics of complexity), bringing a more philosophical dimension to his work. Classical mechanics - two main concepts worth knowing. The first is Newton’s second law: F= ma: Force equals mass times acceleration. If you apply a force to a fixed mass, it tells you how much acceleration you will get. And knowing acceleration which is the change in velocity, you can make predictions. The second equation is the law of universal gravitation. it allows us to determine the motion of heavenly bodies. It says that the gravitational attraction between two bodies is the product of their masses divided by the distance between them squared, times a constant, called Newton’s gravitational constant. Energy is not a vector like force or momentum, but it is just a number. Work is closely related to energy. It is force times distance traveled. Energy for most objects consists of kinetic energy plus potential energy. KE is the energy of motion, It is KE = ½ M V^2 – the more mass you have and/or the more velocity you have, the more energy you have. Gravitational potential energy is expressed as PE = m g h – mass times the gravitational acceleration times the height. The total energy of an object is both Kinetic energy plus potential energy. Potential energy can take many forms. Gasoline or petrol has chemical potential energy. Important: Energy is always conserved. It is not created or destroyed. It only changes form. Thermodynamics is the study of work, heat, and energy on a system. We showed energy is how much work you could do. But another form of energy is thermal energy. If a car is moving and you apply the brakes, the kinetic energy of the car gets converted to thermal energy, created by friction of the car’s brakes. Temperature is the average kinetic energy of atoms in a system. Thermal energy is the total kinetic energy of atoms in a system. Entropy is a measure of disorder, or more accurately, the information required to describe the micro states of a system. The 2nd law of thermodynamics states that entropy of an isolated system can never decrease. Energy at lower entropy can do more work than energy at high entropy. The one way flow of Entropy seems to be the only reason we have a forward flow of time. Electromagnetism is the study of the interaction between electrically charged particles. The essentials are in Maxwell’s equations. If you have a static object with a charge, it will affect only other charges. If you have a static magnet, it will affect only other magnets. It will not affect charges. But if you have a moving charge, it will affect a magnet. And if you have a moving magnet, it will affect a charge. The constants mu naught and epsilon naught are the permeability and permittivity of free space. These two constants determine the speed of light because they measure the resistance of space to changing electric and magnetic fields. Special Relativity: Einstein presumed that the speed is the same in any frame of reference. This was one of the postulates. The second postulate was principle of relativity - the laws of physics are the same for all observes who are moving at the same velocity relative to each other. Einstein showed that the only way these can be true is if time was not fixed, but was relative. General relativity: Later Einstein showed using the same assumptions, there would be no way to tell if you were in an accelerating reference frame or standing stationary on earth. A flashlight beam will bend in gravity. But since light always takes the shortest path between any two points, this means that space-time itself is bending. Quantum mechanics: Three principles are important. First by Max Planck, says that energy is not continuous, but is quantized. The amount of energy equals the frequency of the radiation times Planck's constant. Using this, Einstein later showed that a photon is both a wave and a particle. The second is the Heisenberg's uncertainty principle: you cannot know both a particle’s exact position and it’s exact momentum at the same time. For a particle with mass, this means if you know exactly where a particle is, you don’t know how fast going. If you know exactly how fast it’s going, you don’t know where it is. #allphysics #arvinash Schrodinger's equation: prior to measurement, quantum systems are in superposed states. This means that their properties can only be expressed as a wave function. A wave function simplified, is a set of probabilities. So in a hydrogen atom, you can’t know where to find the electron in advance. All you can know is the probability of where you might find it, if you measured it. Prior to measurement, all quantum systems are waves of probabilities. This is not a limitation of our measuring devices. It is a limitation of reality. Become a patron: 🤍

In his 1915 General Theory of Relativity, Albert Einstein defined gravity as the bending of space and time. This was the prevailing idea of gravity for the following century. But now, a new theory has been proposed that could change everything we know about gravity. The Digital Gravity Theory proposes that gravity is not a force but rather the product of the topology of space and time. If this new theory is correct, it could mean a complete overhaul of our understanding of physics. Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains The Weirdness of Quantum Physics


Quantum mechanics is the area of physics that deals with the behaviour of atoms and particles on microscopic scales. Since its inception, the many counter-intuitive aspects and results of quantum mechanics have provoked strong philosophical debates and many interpretations. Neil deGrasse Tyson explains quantum physics in a way that is understandable even for the lay person. In Quantum Mechanics there is no such thing as absolute certainty when looking for something. This phenomenon is known as Uncertainty Principle and was Introduced first in 1927 by the German physicist Werner Heisenberg. Heisenberg realized that one implication of quantum physics is that the act of measurement always disturbs the object measured. Neil deGrasse Tyson explains that the whole computer world is based on the principle of Quantum Physics. We are able to manipulate the electrical properties of silicon only because we can study the wave nature of electrons. Our daily routines are often governed by technology that is directly related to Quantum Physics, thus our lives rest upon these fundamental scientific discoveries. Another hard concept to grasp is Quantum entanglement. Einstein referred to it as "spooky action at a distance. It occurs when a pair or group of particles is generated, interact, or share spatial proximity in a way such that the quantum state of each particle of the pair or group cannot be described independently of the state of the others. But Neil deGrasse Tyson and Lawrence Krauss explain this concept with everyday life examples which makes it a little bit easier to understand. As Neil deGrasse Tyson points out, the first quantum phenomena were observed more than a century ago. I endeavour to be as accurate as possible in my videos, but I am human and definitely don’t know everything, so there are sometimes mistakes. Also, due to the nature of my videos, there are bound to be oversimplifications. Some of these are intentional because I don’t have time to go into full detail, but sometimes they are unintentional and here is where I clear them up. 1. “Isaac Newton invented calculus.” Actually there is controversy over who invented calculus first Isaac Newton or Gottfried Leibniz. Regardless of who it was I have used Leibniz’s mathematical notation here and so he definitely deserves credit. I did’t know about all this so thanks to those who pointed it out. 🤍 2. “Maxwell derived the laws of electromagnetism.” This is a simplification as Maxwell’s work was built on the backs of other scientists like Hans Christian Ørsted, André-Marie Ampère and Michael Faraday who discovered induction and saw that electricity and magnetism were part of the same thing. But it was Maxwell who worked out all the maths and brought electricity and magnetism together into a unified theory. 🤍 3. “Entropy is a measure of order and disorder”. This is also a simplification and this does a good job of explaining it better 🤍 4. Einstein and Quantum physics: I made it sound like quantum physics was built by people other than Einstein, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Einstein got a Nobel prize for his work on the photoelectric effect which was a key result to show the particle-like nature of light. Funnily enough he never got a nobel prize for his work on Relativity! What is Quantum Field theory? Why is it necessary? How is it different than quantum mechanics? Classical mechanics indicates that an orbiting electron creates electromagnetic radiation which means that it would constantly lose energy, and fall to the nucleus. This does not happen. Quantum Mechanics solved this problem by showing that electrons travel in quantized orbits at their lowest energy state, and that they do not orbit but exist as a clould around the nucleus. In quantum mechanics, objects are wavefunctions described by the Schrodinger equation. The location of a particle is unknown until the moment of measurement. We cannot know where it is beforehand, only the probability of finding it at any specific location. This is a great model but it also has some problems. First of all, quantum mechanics is not relativistic. It will give you the wrong result if the quantum object is moving close the speed of light. The practical result of this is that as it doesn’t incorporate a speed limit, the speed of light, needed to make causality work. It allows for two measurements to influence each other faster than light. This would mean that there would be some reference frame in which the future could influence the past, breaking causality. A second problem with quantum mechanics is that it only tells you how a particle evolves over time. It does not tell you how it is created or annihilated. So it can’t account for things like beta decay, due to the weak nuclear force, where a neutron transforms into a proton, an electron and an antineutrino. This is where quantum field theory explains things that quantum mechanics cannot explain on its own. So what is quantum field theory? QFT a mathematical framework that combines classical field theory, special relativity, and quantum mechanics There is a field for every particle of the standard model. All of these fields extend out in all of spacetime. The fields are always there and exist everywhere including inside your body. Although they exist everywhere and you can’t see them, they are not nothing. They are teeming with virtual particles. These are particle-antiparticle pairs that get created and destroyed constantly. We can visualize these fields as a kind of ocean. Just like the ocean always has some turbulence, the fields always have a kind of turbulence even in their ground state of minimal energy. This turbulence is due to virtual particle creation and annihilation. In these turbulent seas, if there is enough energy, a larger wave can be created which CAN be measured. These are the real particles. Energy can be transferred between two fields via a mediating boson field. This is considered an interaction or a force. Matter particles can’t interact on their own without a mediating boson. So while in quantum mechanics there is no way for the neutron to split its energy into 3 different particles – a proton, electron and antineutrino, in quantum field theory this can be done via energy exchange between the fields. Although the number of particles may change, the total energy is always conserved. In other words, the energy of the fields is the same before and after the energy exchange. So by having quantum fields we can mathematically account for and model creation and annihilation of particles, as well as the mechanism of force exchange. #quantumfieldtheory #QFT The icing on the cake is that the theory is fully relativistic, and free of causality violations. But even this modification of quantum mechanics is not perfect. For example, QFT is still missing gravity. We do not have a quantum field theory for gravity. So even QFT which is extremely accurate for the forces and particles we know of in the standard model, remains as yet incomplete.
