Okinawa is the largest of the Ryukyu Islands located off the coast of Japan between the East China and Philippine Seas. Okinawa belongs to one of five regions of the world known as blue zones. People who reside in blue zones live exceptionally long, healthy lives compared to the rest of the world’s population. The lifespans enjoyed by Okinawans may be explained by several genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. That said, experts believe that one of the strongest influences is diet. This article explores the Okinawa diet, including its primary foods, health benefits, and possible drawbacks. What is the Okinawa diet?. In the purest sense, the Okinawa diet refers to the traditional eating patterns of the people living on the Japanese island of Okinawa. Their unique diet and lifestyle are credited with giving them some of the longest lifespans on the planet. The traditional Okinawa diet is low in calories and fat while high in carbs. It emphasizes vegetables and soy products alongside occasional — and small — amounts of noodles, rice, pork, and fish. In recent years, the modernization of food production and dietary habits has led to a shift in the macronutrient content of the Okinawa diet. Although still low-calorie and primarily carb-based, it now contains more protein and fat. The macronutrient breakdown of the Okinawa diet is outlined in this table : Additionally, Okinawan culture treats food as medicine and utilizes many practices from traditional Chinese medicine. As such, the diet includes herbs and spices known for having health benefits, such as turmeric and mugwort. Okinawan lifestyle also emphasizes daily physical activity and mindful eating practices. The health benefits associated with the traditional Okinawan diet have given rise to a mainstream version intended to promote weight loss. While it encourages intake of nutrient-dense foods, this offshoot is heavily influenced by the Western diet. Foods to eat. Many of the Okinawa diet’s benefits may be attributed to its rich supply of whole, nutrient-dense, high-antioxidant foods. Essential nutrients are important for the proper function of your body, while antioxidants protect your body against cellular damage. Unlike other Japanese, Okinawans consume very little rice. Instead, their main source of calories is the sweet potato, followed by whole grains, legumes, and fiber-rich vegetables. The staple foods in a traditional Okinawan diet are: Vegetables (58–60%): sweet potato (orange and purple), seaweed, kelp, bamboo shoots, daikon radish, bitter melon, cabbage, carrots, Chinese okra, pumpkin, and green papaya. Grains (33%): millet, wheat, rice, and noodles. Soy foods (5%): tofu, miso, natto, and edamame. Meat and seafood (1–2%): mostly white fish, seafood, and occasional pork all cuts, including organs. Other (1%): alcohol, tea, spices, and dashi (broth). What’s more, jasmine tea is consumed liberally on this diet, and antioxidant-rich spices like turmeric are common. #OkinawaDiet

Adding tuna makes the dish very tasty yet addictive. Cooking carrot with oil makes the process of absorbing nutrients of carrot easy. Unique to Okinawa and often referred to as the Ryukyuan cuisine, traditional Okinawan food culture embraces its ingredients, cooking methods, customs, and various other aspects of local life. At its root lie the appreciations toward the climate and natural resources of the islands, the spirit of treasuring the ties and bonds within the family, relatives, and community, the influences from both Japan and China, and other countries. You can enjoy the diverseness of Okinawan food culture when you visit the local market. Food Culture in Okinawa 🤍 Okinawa is Japan’s tropical paradise. A beach destination for relaxation. ♥FOLLOW ME HERE♥ 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 Goya Chanpuru (Stir-Fried Bitter Melon) is a very popular Okinawan dish. The dish is eaten very often in Summer in Japan when Goya (bitter melon/gourd/squash) is in season! By washing or boiling it, you can remove the bitter taste BUT I know some of you still don't like the bitter flavor of Goya. Sure this is the recipe for those who love it ;) hehe More Goya recipes are coming soon!!! - Goya Chanpuru / Stir-Fried Bitter Melon Difficulty: Easy Time: 25min Number of servings: 4 Ingredients: 1 (250g=8.8oz.) Goya (bitter melon) 180g (6.4oz.) thinly sliced pork *ham, bacon, or SPAM is okay but you may want to less the amount of soy sauce when you season at the end 400g (14oz.) Shima-dofu (cotton / firm tofu) 2 eggs A * salt and pepper * 2 tsp. corn or potato starch 1/2 tbsp. cooking oil 1/2 tbsp. sesame oil B * 1 tbsp. soy sauce * salt and pepper 1 (5g) package Katsuobushi (bonito flakes) Directions: 1. Cut both ends of Goya, then cut in half lengthwise. Scrape off the seeds with a spoon and slice into thin half rounds. Put them in a bowl, sprinkle with 1/2 tsp. of salt, then leave for 5 minutes until tender. Wash and drain well. *in this way you can remove the bitter taste of the Goya. 2. Tear Tofu into bite-size chunks and drain well in a strainer. 3. Cut sliced pork into bite-size pieces if necessary, then season with A. 4. Heat cooking oil in a frying pan and cook Tofu until golden brown. Then set aside. 5. In the same pan, heat sesame oil, then stir-fry the pork and Goya until done. Then add back the Tofu and season with B. *if you are using ham, bacon, or SPAM you may want to less the amount of soy sauce 6. Pour in the beaten egg, wait for 10 seconds until slightly cooked, then toss lightly. 7. Quickly mix in Katsuobushi (bonito flakes) to finish. レシピ（日本語） 🤍 - Music by SHWフリー音楽素材 miyako_japan2 🤍 FYI (products I used in my videos): 🤍 ♥Original T-SHIRTS♥ 🤍 ♥Visit my Blog to know more about ME♥ 🤍 ♥My Recipe Posts in Japanese♥ 🤍 🤍 🤍 ♥and of course SUBSCRIBE♥ 🤍
This is the GRAND OKINAWA FOOD TOUR! I will show you all the great food that Okinawa has to offer, everything from Okinawa Soba to Rafute, but you will also see obscure dishes like Okinawan goat soup and goat sashimi. I went at to Okinawa at the end of November and the weather was still fantastic. An average of 22°C to 25°C during the day with a water temperature of 26°C. Warm enough to go snorkeling for hours! And definitely the right temperature to get stuffed with good food on Okinawa. The main dishes that you will see in this video: Goat Soup Recently goat soup has seen a renaissance on Okinawa, although even some locals don't really like the taste and smell of it. And trust me: That stuff SMELLS! To get rid of that smell, oftentimes yomogi (Artemisia princeps) is added to the soup. This is also true for the goat soup in the video. To make a long story short, if you like lamb, you should also give this soup a try! Goat sashimi: I did not even know that you can eat goat raw. Apparently you can. That does not mean that you should. But you can get goat sashimi at many places that sell the more popular goat soup. Okinawa Soba: Looks similar to ramen, but has a completely different flavor profile. The so called soba noodles have nothing to do with the buckwheat soba from the Japanese mainland. Okinawa soba are made from wheat and are served in a pork broth, flavored with konbu and katsuboshi. Wagyu Soup: Similar to the goat soup, the base soup is very hearty and a tad sour, probably from vinegar. You will find all kind of cuts in this soup, from lean to fatty, from skin to offal, it is all in there. You definitely have a "gutsy" flavor in the soup, but it is not too bad. No comparison to the goat soup. If you are not a fan of goat, this is the way to go! Where we had the Wagyu Soup: ► 🤍 Okinawa Tonkotsu Ramen: I made a full video about the fantastic tonkotsu ramen that you can get on Okinawa. You can find the video here: ► 🤍 This is the place we ate the ramen at: Onizo Ramen, Nago: ► 🤍 If you want to eat like the locals, the First Makishi Public Market in Naha is an absolute must visit. A bit away from the main tourist street called Kokusai Dori, you will find all the popular Okinawan dishes in their best form. There is almost nothing you cannot get here (maybe except goat soup). An abundance of fresh and exotic seafood can be found in Okinawa, Japan. Among the best to try are the giant lobster, giant sea snail, bigeye tuna, red snapper, and pufferfish.
Story Title: Traditional Okinawan Cuisine Episode 6 Broadcast Date: 25th January 2014 Presenters: Trevor Cochrane & Kim Syrus Okinawan traditional food is absolutely a must-try. It's always good to ask a local where to eat, and this restaurant - Ashibiuna in Naha, Okinawa, came highly recommended. Surrounded by lush, meticulously maintained gardens, the restaurant was originally built as a family home 120 years ago. It was substantially bigger than the other houses of its time, reflecting the owner's wealth and high status.

Have you been to Okinawa? What food did you like and not like?
Even on a global scale, Okinawa is synonymous with the words “health” and “longevity”. Since ancient times, Okinawans have been health-conscious and specialists have provided food that comes from the rich nature. Having an Okinawa-born mother, Roy’s Master Chef, Roy Yamaguchi, has roots tied to Okinawa and is on his way to visit the food masters here. [Okinawa Gastronomy] 🤍
