14 Years Living Off-Grid in a Self-Built Cabin & Farming Tons of Food on the Land

Stephanie and Joel share their 14-year journey of building a home from reclaimed materials, living off-grid with solar power, and growing a lot of their own food, from fruits and veggies to milk, meat, and honey. They built their home on shared land using materials they salvaged from the dump, wood from a building they took apart themselves, and whatever free stuff they could get their hands on. They had no electricity in the beginning so they only had candles. Eventually, they got a solar panel and a battery to run lights, and the systems have evolved from there. They now have a wood cookstove for heat and cooking in the winter, 5 solar panels and 4 lithium batteries for electricity (plus a generator to supplement on cloudy days), a washing machine, a propane fridge and stove for summertime cooking, and a thermostat controlled propane stove so they don't have to get up in the middle of the night to stoke the fire. For water they have a quarry on the land which they draw from to fill a reservoir in their loft. From there, the water is gravity fed into the kitchen and bathroom. Their drinking water comes from a well on the property. The toilet is an Airhead urine diverting toilet. The cabin has a master bedroom in the loft and a main-floor bedroom that's split into two sleeping spaces for their kids. They have an open-concept kitchen, dining and living room area, and the bathroom is closed in with a beautiful bottle wall. There's also a sunroom they recently added to the front of the house to bring in natural light, passive solar heating, and to grow food in the winter (with the help of LED grow lights). For work, Joel owns a tree service business, and Stephanie runs an off-grid Airbnb business. Former Army tech Larry Johnson has spent his career improving computer and telephone systems so when he saw inefficiencies in how we grow our food, he decided to create a new system for farming your yard. His EZGro garden uses aquaponics, stacked towers, and custom pots to create a high-density vertical garden (HDVG) on as little land as a deck, rooftop, or parking space. Johnson says the system will grow 700 plants, using 15 towers, in a space of just 2 by 18 feet. Today, he sells kits ranging from single tower patio gardens to 10-tower deck gardens to commercial-sized set-ups like those being used by a Miami football stadium for concession meals, by a Whole Foods Market in New Jersey, and by rooftop farmers in Lagos, Nigeria. It all began in 1995 when Johnson began tinkering with his quad pot design, crafting a custom container strong enough to hold tomato plants with over 100 pounds of fruit. He then developed an irrigation system that feeds nutrient-rich water from the top of the towers, drips through the pots, and filters out through tubing below to be reused. This closed-loop system uses less than 10% of the water of a traditional garden. To create a system robust enough for even off-grid farmers, Johnson has spent the last 2 decades developing his trihelix solar windmill. Solar panels are mounted on top of three turbines, known as the "Tri-Helix", which are twisted like DNA strands to catch even inconsistent wind (turbines start turning in winds of just 2mph). 🤍 On *faircompanies: 🤍

Full tour of 3 off-grid passive solar growing domes that can be used as 4-season year-round greenhouses in just about any climate and growing zone. The geodesic dome structure can withstand up to 7 feet of snow and ~180km/h wind speeds. They're built with cedar struts to withstand humidity, marine-grade aluminum hubs for strength, and polycarbonate panels that provide a 1.6 R-value and are fully recyclable. In Canada, these growing domes are sold by Arctic Acres: 🤍 🤍 🤍 In the US, these growing domes are sold by Growing Spaces: 🤍 The growing domes have a specific number of intake and exhaust fans based on their square footage and the CFM (cubic foot per minute) required. These fans are powered by solar panels and they don't need an external power source to function. There are quite a few additional passive solar features that help regulate the temperature inside the domes, including aluminum shade cloth, bicarbonate spray coating, a reflectix wall, a thermal mass pond, and geothermal ventilation. We love how these simple technologies can help make growing food and being self-sufficient year-round a little easier and less energy-intensive in all types of climates. Thanks for watching! It's an emotional week off-grid as we make progress on our Geodesic Dome House build. With only a short time before the arrival of our dome kit, the pressure is on to complete the 600sqft platform that will house our new Tiny Home. Using locally milled rough-cut lumber, this task has been anything but easy. We are thankful to our off-grid community which has pulled together to help us complete this labor-intensive project. There is still so much to do before winter temperatures arrive but they are coming. Join us this week as we make major headway in a race against winter. How much does it cost to live off grid in Portugal? What are our living costs? What's the cost of living in central Portugal? What do we spend our money on? It's time for another Q&A session where we're talking all about what it costs to live our off-grid life (in a tent) here while we're renovating our house and restoring the land. If you're looking to move to Portugal or buy a house in Portugal, this video might help you understand what some things cost. Of course, this is all very specific to our situation and context but it's a question we get all the time so we thought we'd cover it in some depth. 🤍

Living off the grid requires you to keep the cycle of resources flowing inward. It's now been 2 months since our rainwater harvesting system broke and we have been forced to seek our drinking water from places not on the property. When living a minimalist lifestyle you tend to get used to utilizing the least amount of the resources you have to prepare for times when resources are low. This is why we felt the urgency to rebuild and upgrade our rainwater harvesting system complete with a biofilter filtration system. We take you through our day and daily routine of our off grid experience and will share with some of the ideas we have to sustain ourselves like mushroom cultivation which I talk to you all about.. Making major strides after many setbacks has taught us that the ebb and flow of our off grid journey is unavoidable and to take every obstacle as another learning experience to a great lesson called life. The raised beds are being built in my off grid greenhouse and will contribute to my self reliance. 50 years off-grid: architect-maker paradise amid NorCal redwoods

In 1968, Charles Bello and his wife, Vanna Rae, moved onto 240 acres of redwood forest looking to live a simpler life off the land. They had spent their savings to purchase the land so they got to work building their home themselves. Their first structure was a panelized A-frame that they erected in 5 days (with help from a couple family members). The total cost was $2,800. The property is a half-hour drive down a dirt road and it was bare land when they arrived so Charles and Vanna Rae built their own infrastructure: roads, bridges and went decades without refrigeration nor phone (they eventually installed PV panels and cabling for phone lines). After 15 years in the A-frame, they built a cabin in the woods, and there they lived for a decade until the trees began to block out their views. In 1991 Charles (who once apprenticed under famed architect Richard Neutra) designed the Parabolic Glass House. With a curvilinear wood roof and two curved walls of windows, the home feels enveloped in trees. Charles and Vanna Rae built it for $8,500 with the timber they milled themselves, using salvaged materials for everything from doorknobs to stoves. The couple relied on photovoltaics, solar thermal and gas for power, and a dug-in greenhouse attached to the home provided much of their food. By canning and preserving, they could go for months without going to a grocery store. Their two boys were homeschooled. The couple supported themselves selling Christmas trees. Nearly all the old-growth trees on the property were logged in the early 20th century, but Charles has spent the past half-century restoring the land. He and his wife set up the Redwood Forest Institute in 1997 to manage and preserve the forest. He has carefully selected 1,000 trees to be preserved for 2 millennia as the next generation of old-growth. Now, 88 years old and a widower, Charles is determined to find successors; he hopes to find "three professional couples in their early 40's, financially independent, who want to settle on the property continuing 52 years stewardship of this special place in a sustainable lifestyle where one does for himself or herself rather than urban living". He is currently building "glamping" guest houses that he hopes will help fund the enterprise. From Charles: "I am still able and interested in accommodating interested parties for a tour and discussions regarding Forestry, architecture, and sustainable lifestyle living as an alternative to urban lifestyle and other for interested parties." cbello🤍savetrees, org On *faircompanies: 🤍

Homesteading Couple Hasn’t Bought Groceries in a Year of Self-Sufficient Living

Chris and Stef jumped into self-sufficiency last year when they decided not to buy groceries for an entire year, including staples like salt, sugar, coffee, and flour! Instead, they've been growing, catching, raising, and harvesting 100% of their food supply on a small 1/2 acre homestead. They're only a few weeks away from completing their year-long homestead challenge and they attribute their success to hard work and to the fact that they live in the Southern Gulf Islands where they have a great growing climate and access to the ocean. Be sure to follow their🤍LovinofftheLand homesteading adventures – they're going to continue producing most of their own food even after the challenge is done, and may even announce a brand new challenge later this year! 🤍 🤍 🤍 The couple's four main sources of food have been: CATCH - they catch fish, prawns, and other seafood from the ocean GROW - they grow loads of vegetables, fruit, herbs, and spices on their land HARVEST - they forage for things like mushrooms, berries, nuts, and seaweed RAISE - they raise laying hens, chickens, and turkeys for eggs and meat Eating only what they produce has drastically reduced the amount of money that Chris and Stef spend on groceries (they still buy hygiene products and other items that are not food and beverages) but a lot of the savings went directly towards building infrastructures like fencing and the chicken coop. Another advantage of living off the land and sea like this is that they have noticed a huge reduction in the amount of household waste they're throwing out. Food from the garden doesn't come in a package! It was inspiring to meet these two and see all the work they've put into learning and working towards their goal of becoming more self-sufficient with their food production. They taught us a ton and we're looking forward to following along with them. Be sure to check out their YouTube channel which is called Lovin Off The Land: 🤍 Thanks for watching! We've been living off grid in our tent for a few months now and as the summer weather heats up, we're increasingly in need of better shower facilities. We've tried a few camping shower solutions but none were really up to the task so we've been making do with a bucket of water and an old chair. Luxury. In this episode we scavenge and reclaim a bunch of materials from our scrap pile and from other places around the property to build a rustic outdoor shower. Follow along to see what happens... 🤍

Growing Potatoes in Moose Manure | Off Grid Gardening in Nature

Building a homestead in the Canadian wilderness has particular challenges, and growing vegetables in moose and deer manure is one of the natural and unusual ways that helps me to become more self reliant at my log cabin. This week, I collect moose droppings from around the forest, including alongside the First Nations longhouse where a couple of moose have been hanging out over the past year. My lower garden is beside a stream that runs behind my log cabin and is a popular crossing spot for moose, deer, bear and wolf so there is plenty of manure in the area that I can use for compost. Good soil is not plentiful here, so I need to build up the organic composition with wild animal manure, green manure, water plants, fish, bird and animal remains and anything else that breaks down quickly. I will continue to compost these organic materials in a large compost pile with leaves and branches making up the bulk of the material. With three separate gardens, I have built redundancy into our food system, which includes not only the cultivated gardens but also consists of wild edibles - meat, fish, fruit and vegetables from the forest, lakes and rivers that surround us here in Ontario Canada. In the newest forest garden that I'm currently developing, I have planted potatoes in leaf litter, forest soil and moose manure as well as many other cool weather vegetables that can be grown before the last frost of the season - spinach, beets, carrots, peas and alliums. In the coming weeks, I'll finish building a bear and wolf proof chicken coop and I'll plant the warm season vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, beans and more by the end of May My Axe and Adze - 🤍 Thanks for watching! AN OFF-GRID family say the reason for moving away from city life was to remove themselves from the “negative things of the world” - such as the public school system and western medicine. Kip Smyth grew up in Thousand Oaks, CA, as a 'city boy'. He worked as a manager at a retail store and hated the consumer culture that came with it. So Kip and his wife Carrie researched the best place to relocate their family to a sustainable way of life. They landed on the Ozarks, and seven years ago bought the land for their dream to become a reality. The family-of-nine now live in a 500sq. ft. tiny home where they keep dairy cows, chickens and turkeys. Kip told Truly: “I'm pulling my children out of the negative things of the world. If you look at what's happening in America right now, the kind of craziness, it's not getting a better society.” Videographer: Nathan Johnson Editor: Thom Johnson Producers: Nathalie Bonney, James Thorne, Kate Moore Follow their story here: 🤍 SUBSCRIBE to Truly: 🤍 Click here to follow your favourite Truly shows on Instagram! I Grew and Foraged 100% of My Food for an Entire Year!

For one year I grew and foraged 100% of my food. Every. Single. Bite. No grocery stores, no restaurants, not even a drink at a bar. Nature has been my garden, my pantry and my pharmacy. I lived in the city of Orlando, Florida in a 100 square foot tiny house. With no land of my own I turned front yards into gardens and shared the bounty of food with the homeowners. Over the year I grew over 100 different foods in my gardens, foraged over 200 foods from nature and I even grew and foraged my own medicine and vitamins too. This project wasn’t just about growing and foraging all of my food though. It was about empowering others to take back power from Big Ag. I built gardens 15 Gardens for the People, planted over 200 Community Fruit Trees, sent out over 5,000 seed packs to help people grow their own organic, healthy food and I taught free gardening classes to the people in my community. I’ve been exploring food for nearly a decade and I believe the globalized, industrialized food system is broken . This was a personal quest to see whether I could step away from Big Ag and grow and forage every bite of my own food. Here I am, one year later. I did it and I feel healthier and happier today than when I started. I'm here to share solutions for a more sustainable and just food system with you.
