Bryce from Dreamweavers Collective explains the benefits and challenges of building with cob! Cob is a natural building material created from clay, sand, and straw that can be used to build load bearing walls, window and door frames, and much more. It's an affordable and natural way to build using materials that are typically found locally. In fact, building with earth and natural fibres is a technique used in many places around the world. This style of construction can have different names, like earth building, adobe, mud bricks, etc. Unlike conventional buildings, cob is a simple way to build that can be an interesting and easy option to build a DIY green home using little, if any, toxic materials. Bryce teaches natural building and cob workshops in person and online. You can find out more about his courses on his website here: 🤍 He calls himself a 3rd generation cobber because he learned cob building techniques from Pat Hennebery at Cobworks: 🤍 And Pat learned about cob from Ianto Evans, Linda Smiley, and the rest of the team at The Cob Cottage Company: 🤍 We hope you enjoyed learning about this interesting, natural, affordable, and alternative building technique :) We think cob houses are incredible and beautiful structures! I'm not sure how I missed this. It's possibly because it's a secret that has been hiding underneath a phosphor loaded gel out of sight. Could this be the answer to the bond-wire problems in the early low voltage 20-100W LED modules? It's a new package of bare LED dice/chip that can literally be soldered onto a PCB as if it was a standard surface mount component. Just a very-very small one. It makes me wonder how they pick and place these and check the orientation before placing on the PCB. I guess the bare chip could be dabbed across some tiny contact pads to check if it emits light. When I tested this COB (Chip On Board) array with very limited current the LEDs all glowed uniformly, even at the point they were all just barely visible. The same can't be said for the older style low voltage module I also show in the video. It had a high number of defective LEDs exhibiting damage in the form of parallel resistance suggesting film damage. Possibly caused by the wire bonding process. When powered the older module would also extinguish whole rows of LEDs when pressure was applied to the busbars at the end of each series string. Just for fun I tested this LED with a 470nF capacitor in series to act as an external current limiter. The power indicated by the Hopi was 3.4W and the module put out a useful amount of light without getting warm, and would probably last decades with that very low current. Could be a useful way to switch a floodlight made with one of these between normal power and a low level ambient output. The contact block on the PCB which was clearly not bear-proof looks more like a push-in style for solid core wires. My attempt to treat it like a Wago terminal and "open the spring loaded contacts" just forced the folded contact strip apart and broke the little tab that is just a wedge that is supposed to part the sides just enough to get a wire back out again. I wonder how reliable this new type of LED panel will be over time. It's a foregone conclusion that the manufacturers will be pushing everything to its limits so thermal stresses may be an issue. As with all this style of driverless, or more accurately DOB (Driver On Board) LED module there is no smoothing. So the flicker at 100/120Hz is strong. They could design a COB to take an external capacitor or externally rectified and smoothed supply if they increased the number of LEDs in series to accommodate the higher smoothed voltage while still allowing a margin to drop across the active current limiting circuitry. I'm guessing that the new LED chips may be limited to Gallium Nitride technology at the moment, hence the use of phosphor to make the red and yellow COBs. The green ones seem to be available either with phosphor loaded gel or as bare green chips. Note that if converting a 110V COB to 220V by swapping the links the current will still be set higher, so the parallel resistor cluster may need to be adjusted. If converting a 220V COB to 110V the current will be lower than a stock 110V COB. The Earth Berm Cottage (EBC) is an earth sheltered tiny house. The walls are light wood framed (2×6 studs on 16″ centers). We’re infilling the stud bays of the side and back walls with cob. The front (non-bermed) wall will be infilled with Light Clay Straw (LCS). So, why put mud in the walls? That's what we're looking at in this video. Note: With the concrete mixer and fan going the sound quality of this video is not the best but there are lots of diagrams and text to follow along with. Alternatively, I published and article about putting cob in the walls at my website. 🤍

You may find cob cottages particularly cute, but taste isn't reason enough to choose one natural building material over another. Like more manufactured products, different earth materials all have different uses: straw bale is a great insulator, cob is a nice thermal sink as well as one of the easiest materials to sculpt if you're looking for lots of curves in your structure. "There are a dozen ways you can build a wall using pretty much the same materials: clay soils, straw, sand, sticks", explains natural building expert Michael G. Smith, "and each of those has its own particular sets of attributes as far as wall thickness, thermal properties, sculptural properties, speed, materials that they require, etcetera, etcetera so you might make different decisions based on your site, based on who you are, what you need as to which materials to use, but even within the same building different parts of the building need to do different tasks." So even in the same building, you might choose straw bale for one wall and cob for another. In this video, Smith shows us some of the uses for straw bale, cob, slip straw, and clay wattle (a variation on wattle and daub) in the homes and buildings of Boonville, California's Emerald Earth Sanctuary. 🤍 On *faircompanies: 🤍

Have you heard that you can microwave corn on the cob? Did you know that by cooking corn on the cob in the microwave you can make it PERFECT... EVERY time? No shucking & no silk mess. Whether you live in an RV (like us) or a house, the microwave corn on the cob trick rocks! One of the best parts about microwaving corn on the cob is that you leave the corn right in the husk... there's no need to shuck it. You only need to trim the end off if the ears are too big to fit inside your microwave. Each ear takes four minutes on high power, so we set our microwave to 12 minutes for 3 ears (Pro Tip... when you put more food in a microwave, it has to run for longer to cook it all). When your ears of corn are done cooking they'll be steaming hot, so be sure to use oven mitts to avoid getting burned. With a sharp knife, cut off the large end of each ear. Even though you'll lose a row or two of corn kernels, you want to cut above the point where the stalk connects to the cob. Then grab the husk at the small end and squeeze the ear of corn out the other side... like you're squeezing a tube of toothpaste to get out the last bit. Microwaving corn on the cob works like a charm and will leave your ears perfectly cooked and virtually silk-free every time! Freezing corn on the cob without blanching is an easy summer-time chore. We make freezing corn on the cob without blanching easier by processing it outside right next to the garden. Growing sweet corn is an art so freezing the harvest is extremely important. The process of freezing corn on the cob is made simple if performed outside. The way we process and freeze our corn will not heat up the kitchen. However, you can do this in your kitchen. I honestly did not believe that freezing corn on the cob without blanching would work so I did a one year test run. It worked great! Finally we show you how to load the freezer bag which is important when freezing sweet corn. Ingredients: Corn in the husks (washed) cutting board sharp knife cutting board Transcript: How to Make Corn on the Cob in the Microwave – No Fuss No Shucking No Silks Hello and welcome back to In the Kitchen with Matt. I am your host Matt Taylor. Today I am going to show you how to make corn on the cob in the microwave. It is an awesome method, you don’t have to waste time shucking the corn and trying to get every bit of strand of silk off of it. It is really cool. I was a bit skeptical at first, I saw someone else do it, and I thought well I don’t know about that, and now it is one of my go-to methods for awesome corn on the cob. All you need is an oven mitt, corn on the cob, I washed it, cutting board, and a sharp knife. And now we are going to cook this on high in the microwave for three minutes. And then we will use our oven mitt to pull it out. Okay once we have it out of the microwave we make sure to hold it with our oven mitt, because it will be really hot. We take a sharp knife and we are going to cut it off at the end here. Okay, and then what we are going to do is just pinch the end, just keep pinching the end here. Wiggle it a little bit.
