In the past, retiring from a career suggested hanging up your hat, giving up your dreams, losing your initiative, losing your creativity, and losing your mind. Not anymore! Referencing scientific research, and showing a curious, audacious fun-loving group of adventurers as her case-study, Duke University educator, and Semester at Sea teacher and traveler Dr. Ingrid Bianca Byerly shares the secret to a fulfilling 'Third Act' of life. Ingrid Bianca Byerly serves as the Director of the Humanitarian Challenges Focus program, and teaches public speaking and ethnomusicology at Duke University. A native of South Africa, she grew up in a family of musicians, which inspired her doctoral research on the agency of music in societies. Her interests as an educator range from the Montessori and Suzuki methods in early education to Lifelong Learning approaches in later years. Having sailed around the world as faculty on three Semester at Sea voyages, teaching world music and global advocacy for humanitarian causes, she has visited over 50 countries, both as a teacher and traveler. Besides instructing freshmen on the skills of student success, and guiding college seniors through their honors theses to graduate with distinction, she treasures the lifelong learners attending her classes on Semester at Sea, as they inspire her interest in the importance of adult education, and of optimizing the golden Third Act in life. While there is no standardized definition of lifelong learning, it has generally been taken to refer to the learning that occurs outside of a formal educational institute, such as a school, university or corporate training. Lifelong learning does not necessarily have to restrict itself to informal learning, however. It is best described as being voluntary with the purpose of achieving personal fulfillment. The means to achieve this could result in informal or formal education. Lifelong learning recognizes that not all of our learning comes from a classroom. For example, in childhood, we learn to talk or ride a bike. As an adult, we learn how to use a smartphone or learn how to cook a new dish. These are examples of the everyday lifelong learning we engage in on a daily basis, either through socialization, trial and error, or self-initiated study. Personal fulfillment and development refer to natural interests, curiosity, and motivations that lead us to learn new things. We learn for ourselves, not for someone else. So in this video, we discuss the 12 Powerful Habits Of A Lifelong Learner.

I share 5 very practical and effective strategies on how to make continuous learning a natural part of your life. Subscribe to my YouTube channel here: 🤍 Learning is not just for people who are in school that need to do well on an exam. Learning is extremely important to stay relevant in the ever-changing job marketplace, to achieve meaningfulness in our lives, and maintain a healthy well-being into old age. And it's not just about learning something once and that's it. It's about continuous learning - lifelong learning. It might sound tedious, but being a lifelong learner is not as difficult as you might think. In this video, I'm going to share 5 very practical and effective strategies on how to make continuous learning a natural part of your life. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL NOW 👇 🤍 Most career and job search strategies bombard people with messages telling you to a-million-and-one things like: craft an outstanding resume, write an attention-grabbing cover letter, do an extensive job search, go networking often, reframe your weaknesses, upsell your strengths, impress the recruiters, and upgrade your technical skills. While those may be a necessary part of the equation to building a meaningful career, it isn't the right place to start. Starting there often leaves even the highest performing professional feeling frustrated, uninspired, and beginning to second guess themselves. Job postings are like advertisements. They were written by hired hands to attract candidates. You need to be applying business development strategies to your worthy career goals. If you don't do this, you can count on having negative thoughts creeping in about what's wrong with your resume, your background, age, experience, or anything you might think is putting you at a disadvantage. There's actually a science behind how to find work you love and create a fulfilling career from it. It's my proven method behind how I orchestrated my career journey with meaning and purpose. Learning is not limited to a single, specific phase in life. It happens in different contexts, over the course of a lifetime. But only a minority continues to engage with education and training after they leave formal education. And those that do, are by far more likely to have started from a favourable situation. In a world of accelerating change, lifelong learning or continuous learning is the most important long term investment a company can make. We believe that methodically investing in continuous lifelong learning has the highest return on investment of any business activity. In this video, we will explore what continuous learning is. Why continuous learning is the highest ROI activity your organisation can implement, and four actionable steps to becoming a continuous learning organisation. LIST OF RESOURCES Resources mentioned in the Video: 🤍 If every person can make decisions that are one or two per cent better every day - similar to finance’s concept of “compound interest” - the compound returns of learning might seem slim at first - but will grow exponentially over the long run. That is what continuous lifelong learning is all about. Here are the top 4 steps you need to take to create a continuous, lifelong learning culture 1. The first step - Continuous Learning requires a Growth Mindset Essentially, someone with a growth mindset enjoys challenges, strives to learn, and consistently sees potential to develop new skills. This is opposed to a fixed mindset - where an individual sees skills and talent as something they either possess or lack. 2. . The second step - know your people's capabilities and help foster their learning For employees, often, knowing what they should learn next is a hurdle. Employers need to collaborate with employees, benchmark current skill sets, and create strategies toward the most in-demand digital skills. 3. The third step - embed Continuous Learning into the flow of work While organisations realise that learning is a top priority, with 92% prioritising this issue over the next 3-5 years Only 61% feel prepared to do anything about it. What this tells us is that employers feel unsure how to embed learning into the flow of work without compromising short term goals and productivity. 4. The fourth step - reward Continuous Learning According to Deloitte, only 45% of organisations actively reward employees for developing skills and capabilities. And only 39% of leaders are rewarded for developing skills and capabilities on their teams. Given the importance of continuous learning to organisations, use incentives to motivate and reward employees to learn, adapt and improve at the individual level, but also the team level. There you have it! Four steps you can take to embed continuous, lifelong learning into your organisation. We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below! Learning throughout one's life encourages social inclusion and improves one's health. There’s a substantial correlation between learning and improved health, especially among older adults. The notion of life-long learning encompasses not only the acquisition of job-related credentials but also the promotion of learning throughout one's life to improve overall well-being. While 73% of older adults in the United States of America consider themselves lifelong learners, educational engagement tends to decline as people become older. Still, it's never too late to gain new skills and information. This presents a challenge to organizations, employers, and policymakers, who must guarantee that everyone has the opportunity to obtain, retain, and acquire new skills throughout their lives. Toward these goals, This Is Getting Old, with our mission to move toward an age-friendly world, features Part 7:Lifelong Learning of the 10-part AARP/ Age-Friendly Social Innovation Challenge. Watch the full episode or listen to the podcast to learn more about valuable programs and innovative solutions specifically designed for older adults and healthcare providers. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️Does Julio's Case Sounds Familiar? Julio is 55 years old and lives in Hyattsville, MD, with his wife, three children and dog, Fluffy. He has worked as a hospice nurse for nine years now and loves his work. But, Julio feels stuck and burned out. The pay isn't great, and he has to work about 70 hours a week to make ends meet. Julio would love to see fewer patients and learn to be a manager. Still, sometimes he thinks he would have better chances in IT. So, Julio thinks of leaving healthcare altogether and enrolling in a technical community college. ✔️Lifelong Learning - Problem Statement Julio needs a way to increase income and job satisfaction and find a life-work balance because he's burned out and unhappy. This problem results from the employer's lack of attention, support and employee development programs designed to help care workers thrive and grow within the healthcare industry. ✔️Lifelong Learning - Innovative Solutions Identify nonprofit or public resources that can provide low-cost or free career counseling or training services for mid-career workers or the 55+ cohort, including how to advocate with employers. If recommended and feasible, continuing education may be undertaken. Encourage Julio's employer to create pathways within the organization for upward mobility, including training, mentoring, job exploration, and higher pay. This might occur through partnerships with local community colleges, for example. Research concept of unionizing, organizing workers in the caregiver industry to achieve fairer working conditions (higher pay, fewer hours, meaningful support on the job, opportunity for promotion). ✔️ Nobody's Too Old To Learn Lifelong Learning involves being intentional about learning new things - no matter how old you are. Essentially, participation in cultural and recreational activities is essential for our health and the quality of life in our communities as we age. Thus, older adults should increasingly participate in lifelong learning programs and bring a lifetime of experiences to intergenerational programs - like ice skating! Besides, there's nothing wrong with learning a new physical skill and an intellectual one! Both types of lifelong learning are beneficial! ✔️More Ways To Help Julio The challenges that Julio faces could potentially be made better if he worked for an Age-Friendly Employer - and if you haven't heard of that program, you can check out episode 58 with Tim Driver, Founder and CEO of Age-Friendly Ventures. Another option for retooling could be finding an Age-Friendly University, and if you haven't heard of this initiative, please check out my interview with Dr Joanne Montepare in Episode 55. How does one pursue all the varied interests when stuggling with the inevitability and harsh reality of earning one's living? Not taking the easy way of giving up on her interests, Gitanjali JB decided to go ahead chasing her dreams of doing what she felt a keen interest for, without worrying if she ever had a chance of bringing them all together for a constructive cause. While pursuing her passions, she realised that each of her interests was enhancing her life in a way that would not have been possible otherwise. It was not just the thrill of learning something new, but the process of learning gave her insights that made her expertise in the complementing fields more pronounced. Before you decide to give up an interest because of lack of time or just wondering what will you do by pursuing it, watch this inspirational talk by Gitanjali, and you will have a totally new perspective on learning and life and how they go hand in hand! Gitanjali JB is a multifaceted social entrepreneur and educationist. An alum of Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB), her interest in educational reforms was ignited when as a child she could not relate to what she was studying in the books. She gave up her flourishing corporate career of 20 years to set up Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL) as its Founding CEO. HIAL is an alternative institute for mountain development that aims to revolutionise higher education in India through the pedagogy of contextual and experiential learning. The future of work is no longer an abstract concept. Artificial Intelligence and other transformative technologies have disrupted entire industries. Our notion of who does the work—and how and where—is changing every moment. But the way we teach hasn’t caught up to these fundamental and unstoppable shifts. Why does curriculum and job training still focus on memorization, when technology has made information so easily accessible? Why aren’t students and employees encouraged to explore and create, rather than retain and regurgitate? How can we encourage what is perhaps the best defence against future uncertainty, and the way to make ourselves marketable and employable in three, five, and ten years: an insatiable appetite for lifelong learning? In this talk, educator and author Jamie Bricker delivers an urgent call to action for students, employees, corporations, and associations everywhere. It’s time to look at the job skills of the future—communication, innovation, collaboration, and critical thinking—and integrate teaching methods that boost these vital abilities. The more we are aware of these massive changes, the better we can prepare for an unpredictable future and how we can marry proficiency with passion. This is an absolutely essential talk for people everywhere.
