Lib Dem leadership candidate Ed Davey said the Liberal Democrats must become the "anti-Conservative party" if they are to win big in the next general election. On Iain Dale's Lib Dem Leadership Debate, Layla Moran asked Sir Ed Davey how they can win in Labour and Conservative seats in the next election. The acting leader of the party stressed that under no circumstances should the Lib Dems "do a deal with the Conservatives." "Most of our gains will be against the Conservatives," he noted but added that if the Lib Dems are to succeed in Labour seats they need to "show that we are an anti-Conservative party." Sir Ed stated that "many Labour supporters in the areas we want to fight will want to know we're an anti-Conservative party," if they are to convince voters. He argued that in some Labour seats where MPs have become ineffective "we are the only opposition the public have," and they must show that. #IainDale #LibDems #LBC LBC is the home of live debate around news and current affairs. The Liberal Democrats have overturned a 24,000 Tory majority to win the Tiverton and Honiton by-election - an area traditionally loyal to the Tories. A dramatic swing of almost 30% from the Conservatives to the Lib Dems saw candidate Richard Foord achieve a majority of 6,144 to win the Devon constituency. Party leader Sir Ed Davey praised the "positive" result, but added that some voters may have used their ballots to send a message to Tory MPs that "it's time that Boris Johnson should go". #Politics #SkyNews #UK SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel for more videos: 🤍 Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 Like us on Facebook: 🤍 Follow us on Instagram: 🤍 Follow us on TikTok: 🤍 For more content go to 🤍 and download our apps: Apple: 🤍 Android 🤍 Sky News videos are now available in Spanish here/Los video de Sky News están disponibles en español aquí 🤍 Sky News videos are also available in German here/Hier können Sie außerdem Sky News-Videos auf Deutsch finden: 🤍 To enquire about licensing Sky News content, you can find more information here: 🤍

The Liberal Democrats have pulled off an extraordinary victory in North Shropshire by taking a lifelong Tory seat in the by-election for the first time in 200 years. In a shock result, the Lib Dem candidate Helen Morgan secured 17,957 votes, leaving the Conservative Neil Shastri-Hurst with 12,032, and giving the Lib Dems a majority of 5,925 after a massive swing of 34 per cent. The by-election was called after Owen Paterson resigned following sleaze allegations after he was found to have broken lobbying rules for taking around half a million pounds from two companies and seeking to influence government policy. The North Shropshire seat has returned a Conservative MP since 1830. It will prove a humiliating defeat for the Tories and will be regarded by many as a referendum on Boris Johnson’s leadership. Britain's Liberal Democrat party has enjoyed a boost ahead of parliamentary elections on May 6 after two televised debates between the leaders of the main parties. The new found popularity of the party, which has traditionally lagged in third place behind the ruling Labour party and opposition Conservatives, has prompted a barrage of hostile stories about Nick Clegg, its leader, in the right-wing press. Al Jazeera's Nazanine Moshiri reports from London. [April 25, 2010]
With many voters frustrated that in the UK's electoral system there are many constituencies where their vote may not make any difference, tactical voting has become a big factor in this election. Opponents of the Conservatives have cited it as possibly the only way to defeat them. One of the most high profile examples is the actor Steve Coogan - a long-time Labour supporter who has been campaigning for the liberal Democrats in his own constituency. Early this morning, parliament closed for five weeks in scenes of chaos and fury. During the formal ceremony, angry opposition MPs sang in the chamber in protest and claimed the government was silencing their voices.
