They can be truly self sustaining without a filter, CO2 and water changes. This is an ecosphere, a self sustaining ecosystem in a literal glass bowl. The bowl is 12 gallons and is one of the largest I have ever made! I added fire cherry shrimp, they have a super deep red coloration and are a great beginner shrimp. No filter aquariums are an easy fish tank setup for a beginner. They need almost no maintenance other than trimming the plants and feeding. Shrimp need a little additional food in addition to the plant matter and algae that grows in the tank. Avoid overfeeding as without a filter ammonia and nitrites can build up quickly! HUGE 2.5G Spring Ecosphere - SO MUCH LIFE!

This week I built an enormous gigantic huge mega ecosphere! (10L/2.5G) It is completely full of all different kinds of life! I thought it would be nice to build an ecosphere in spring, because all the ponds are warming up. There's daphnia, mayfly larvae and even aquatic isopods! There's also some mysterious red worms and water spiders.... and cool slow motion shots! Enjoy! Patreon:

Huge Natural Saltwater Ecosphere - 1 month update | Full of life!

In contrary to what many of you thought, this ecosphere has not crashed. In fact, there's more life than ever in this closed ecosystem. The HUGE natural saltwater ecosphere is filled with all kinds of copepods and other crustaceans. Some algae and seaweed died. Other algae and plants are doing great. Most impressive of all, the little crab has grown A LOT. Enjoy! Patreon:

12 Year Old Terrarium - Life Inside a closed jar, Over a decade in isolation

In this video we take a look at the terrarium my brother made during his childhood. This terrarium was made between 2007 - 2008. This makes the terrarium at least 12 years old. Inside there is a variety of organisms. All of which have persisted within the closed ecosystem for generations. Originally this terrarium was home to a lot more plant and isopod species, however as the years went by biodiversity was lost as the new ecosystem balanced out. Currently the ecosystem is experiencing cycles. As the plant population increased, so did the isopods. This caused the isopod population to graze on a lot of the terrariums plants, causing the plant population to decrease. I imagine centipede populations may increase in future giving the plants the opportunity to recover. I found this terrarium very fascinating as it's almost as if there are two separate worlds within the same glass demijohn. The algae underground creates a unique habitat, which couldn't possibly exist in nature due to the fact the glass ensured that light could reach the soil underground. This allowed algaes, moss and fungi to flourish, alongside any of the smaller invertebrates that lived among them. Adult isopods seem to inhabit the surface and rarely venture below ground. I believe this is due to the hardness of the clay and rock substrate. The babies do seem to venture underground though, likely using tunnels left behind by earthworms many years ago.

Ecosphere WITH SALAMANDER | Closed Ecosystem | Crazy Ecosphere Update

In this video, I give an update on my ecosphere built from 2 months ago. On a random day, I discovered something strange. I saw something swimming around and got very excited. It first looked like a small fish, but when I looked closer I saw that it was a salamander larvae. In this video, I take you with me in the first 3 weeks of the newt's life. The salamander managed to survive in the closed ecosystem for that time which is extraordinary. This crazy ecosphere update is hopefully the beginning of a great journey. Let's find out how it came into the ecosphere and how the salamander managed to survive in the closed ecosystem aquarium. I also give an update on Sheldon the snail which is thriving and reproducing in the sealed aquarium ecosphere. Huge Natural Saltwater Ecosphere - Starfish, crabs and a lot more...

I made a very big (2.5G/10L) natural saltwater ecosphere. I went to the North Sea and brought seawater and sand with me in jerrycans. Then I built the huge ecosphere and it is full with all different kinds of life. There's a starfish and a crab and even a crab larvae. There's also amphipods and a lot more crustaceans and different kinds of seaweed and marine plants. Enjoy! Patreon:

In this video I make a huge ecosphere for a salamander. I want that the salamander has the ability to grow up and become an adult in an enclosed ecosystem. Therefore I moved the salamander from its old ecosphere setup to a new much larger one. In the old one I also replaced the salamander with a beautiful blue shrimp, so as a bonus I also made a shrimp ecosphere in this video. This newt is now about 2 months old and is still small but has the opportunity to grow in the new closed and sealed aquarium. As a food source I added two large snails which will produce lots of small snails and also some other smaller snail species. I added a few plants to this ecosphere setup: Bacopa monnieri, Pogostemon helferi, Schismatoglottis prietoi and a mario moss ball. The care for these plant species is very easy and therefore I chose these for the large ecosphere. With all these organisms I was able to create a fully self sustaining ecosystem in a big jar, or a jarrarium. I cover everything you need to know on how to make an ecosphere without failing. The Impossible No Opening Orb Ecosphere.... AHHHHH! This project was quite the challenge. I knew it would be, but I couldn't have imagined that it would be anything like this. At nearly every turn I was faced with yet another hurdle. Truthfully, I almost discarded it altogether, but I knew this would be a cool project if I could pull it off. Huge Natural Saltwater Ecosphere - 4.5 month update - So much life! A complete succes!

Hey guys! This time we are looking at the huge natural saltwater ecosphere again. This ecosphere is turning out to be really successful, that's quite rare for a saltwater ecosphere. The crab is growing quite large as well and seems very healthy. The polychaete sand mason worm turned out to be a spionid worm. It's amazing what we can find in just one ecosphere. I really like this closed ecosystem so far! Enjoy! Patreon:

Sealed Aquarium Ecosphere (Aquascape in a Jar)

"Make an ecosphere using aquarium plants" you say? I've been getting requests to do this for awhile now, but say no more because it's here! I had a lot of fun doing this one and I hope that it works out long-term. Obviously it's somewhat experimental, but I don't see any reason why this shouldn't work. Time will tell! I should mention that some of the plants used were grown immersed, so you may have noticed some melting leaves near the end of the video. That's nothing to worry about though. It just has to run its course until we get some acclimated underwater plant growth. If you have any comments, suggestions or questions, leave them down in the comments! Giant Ecosphere

Eco-Sphere is a sealed, spherical enclosure containing plants and animals in perfect balance within an aquatic environment. It is an elegant, completely-enclosed ecosystem teeming with plants and animals in equilibrium. The environment is specifically tailored to support numerous life forms including aquatic plant life and animal life such as small snails, crustecea, and small water-borne animals. The plants provide oxygen (through photosynthesis) and food for the animals which in turn provide carbon dioxide and nutrients for the plants! This is a larger version of the commercially made Eco-sphere at the Singapore Science Centre. I apologise for the noisy background. The shrimps inside are extremely small so you might not be able to see them in the video. Ecosphere sealed in 1993.

Weird Things Happening in the HUGE Spring Ecosphere...

I don't know how to explain this, there's daphnia swimming in the condensation on the glass of the jar...

Hey guys, As mentioned please let me know what you want inside this setup. I wanted to create a large bottled ecosphere/closed terrarium. Temnothorax Uni is what I have in mind as they stay around 200 workers. I may just go for that, I’ll need to let this setup run on its own for around 4-6 weeks as I need to see water depreciation & parameters in finer detail before adding inhabitants. Plus new setups always go through a short moulding stage so I’d rather that’s gone before adding anything live other than springtails which will eat any mould that may form during this period. As always guys, peace and love!

An Alien ECOSYSTEM inside a JAR │ Ecosphere - 2 Year Update

In this video we take a look at the Homemade Ecosphere I built 2 years ago. This ecosphere was the first ecosystem build I filmed the creation of on my channel. It is also one of the most unique. String algae is the dominant producer within this ecosystem. Despite it engulfing a majority of the ecosphere another producer is able to live alongside it. A plant know as Monte Carlo (Micranthemum tweediei) also shares the habitat. The Monte Carlo only grows in the space between the algae and the glass. It does not grow deeper into the middle of the ecosphere. Mites are the primary animal within this ecosphere. They can be found almost everywhere. They are most common found in large groups on the substrates surface. They can also be found climbing in the string algae and more interestingly above the water line. Another animal which coexists within the same space as the Mite is the Ostracod. These Ostracods are much less common than the mites. They appear to reproduce slowly when compared to other Ostracod species in my other ecospheres. Their main food source is the String Algae. I suspect the String Algae to be very poor in nutrients. This would explain the Ostracods low reproduction rates. Another organism within the ecosphere is the Dwarf Ramshorn snails. The Dwarf Ramshorn Snails feed on the String Algae also. Yet again their numbers are dramatically low compared to similar species in my other ecosystems. Worms are also present within the ecosphere, but are seldom seen. It's incredibly hard to spot one unless it's moving as they are easily mistaken as strands of algae. The worms inhabit the soil, but also the algae. The mystery organism within this ecosphere is the orange dots that appear above the water line. I've shown these organisms multiple times in my old update videos. Nobody seems to know what they could be. I suspect they're dinoflagellates, but that is only a guess. Above the water line Aquatic organisms survive inside the condensation on the glass. Algae grows chaotically alongside the small orange dots. Mites and Ostracods have also climbed up the glass and left the water line. This was very exciting to witness. Watch this ecospheres creation and development here: 🤍

In this video I make my first ecosphere. The ecosphere includes plants, moss balls and different snail species. I had to make three attempts in this diy ecosphere project, because of some mistakes I made, watch me screwing up the first two attempts at making the ecosphere so you can learn from my mistakes. The third attempt was succesful with a beautiful result and ecosystem for all the inhabitants including one large snail and several smaller snails. Creating a Lake Ecosphere │ An ECOSYSTEM within a SEALED glass JAR!

In this video I visit a lake to create a new ecosphere. This ecosphere is very interesting as it contains aquatic isopods. As far as I can tell these isopods are the main prey species within the ecosphere. They can often be seen exploring their new habitat, however they're quick to spook and even filming them caused some to flee. The ecosystem also contains 2 different species of planaria. The first planaria are smaller, brownish grey and hunt worms and protozoans. The second species of planaria is known as the Milk-white Planaria (Dendrocoelum lacteum). I am very familiar with the Milk-white planaria as it is my favourite species of flatworm. They are much larger than other planarians. Instead of hunting worms or protozoans this species hunts invertebrates and aquatic insects. I was very happy to be able to film this species hunting for my subscribers to watch. I'm uncertain if the isopod population will be able to coexist with such a large predator, but I am hopeful for the future. The ecosphere also hosts leeches, which usually spend their time near the surface and exploring the glass. I don't like leeches and haven't had much luck with them in ecospheres before. I doubt they'll breed within this ecosphere. I look forward to watching this ecosphere develop over time and I hope to film many update videos of it in the foreseeable future.

Huge Ecobulb Riparium Jungle for Rare Fish on DIY Branch Stand

About two months ago, I obtained a really incredible container - the giant jug that I use in this video to be specific. I wasn't quite sure what I would do with it, though, so I left in the garage to collect dust. Eventually, I had a general idea of what I wanted to create and I got to it. Since it's fairly tall, I thought that a riparium or paludarium would be a cool option. However, I didn't have a dedicated spot for it. So I began by making a stand out of tree branches. It seemed like a cool direction to go since the container itself is so unique. With that, I also felt that it made sense to include some rare fish. What better than the Orange Medaka Ricefish? Anyway, this is how I turned an incredible container into a lush, live planted riparium setup that's really unique. Let me know what you think of this build and enjoy the video!
