AV-8B Harrier II: The U.S. Marine Loves Plane For 1 Big Reason

The AV-8B Harrier II is a single-engine ground attack aircraft of the second generation of the Harrier Jump Jet family, produced by BAE SYSTEMS and Boeing, capable of short vertical takeoff and landing (V/STOL) BAE Systems' involvement is not surprising because This iconic aircraft is indeed the result of the British design. Origins of this AV-8B aircraft were Built from the Hawker Siddeley Harrier, a version of the first generation of the harrier series and also known as the AV-8A Harrier, which was designed in the 1960s. This Hawker Siddeley Harrier aircraft was developed directly from the Hawker Siddeley P.1127 prototype.

AV-8B Harrier II the most dangerous aircraft to fly in the U.S military

The Harrier 2 is unique among American military aircraft as one of few to have been adapted from a foreign design. The AV-8B's origin traces back to the British Hawker Siddeley Harrier, which was designed in the 1960s. Though not the first vertical or short take-off and landing aircraft built, it was the first fully operational and successful example. ViSTOL capability was revolutionary because it created an aircraft that could operate from short or less-than-ideal runways, or from no runway at all. ViSTOL caught the eye of the U.S. Marine Corps and, by 1971, the service was flying harriers. Designated the AV-8A, the American export model was similar in most respects to the British Harrier GR.1. A single-seater, the Marines intended for the Harrier to conduct ground attack, close air support , reconnaissance, and fighter missions. Despite giving the appearance of radical design, the AV-8A was quite unsophisticated on the inside, possessing bare-bones navigation and attack systems. Its armament was limited to AIM-9 Sidewinder infrared-guided air-to-air missiles and unguided air-to-ground ordnance such as rockets and general-purpose bombs. copy right Title 17, US Code (Sections 107-118 of the copyright law, Act 1976): All media in this video is used for purpose of review & commentary under terms of fair use. The last British VSTOL aircraft | Harrier Jump Jet GR9

Standing beside IWM’s Harrier GR9, the second generation and last of the Harrier jump jets, Fighter Pilot Paul Tremelling tells us about the history of the Hawker-Siddeley Harrier, the world’s first fixed-wing vertical or short take-off and landing strike aircraft (VSTOL). Paul joined the Royal Navy in 1996 and flew the Sea Harrier on 800, 801 and 899 Naval Air Squadrons. Qualifying as an Air Warfare Instructor, he transitioned to the Harrier GR9 and served on the Naval Strike Wing, a unit where he became Senior Pilot. Selected for exchange duties with the USN, Tremelling flew F/A-18E Super Hornet with VFA-25, The Fist of The Fleet. In 2009, Paul even flew Harrier ZD461, the one he now stands beside, at RAF Spadeadam. This experience makes Paul the perfect guide to explain the development of the Harrier Jump Jet and why it was so well loved by pilots, with insight into what it was like to land on an aircraft carrier for the first time, how it was to switch between models and what it felt like to learn that the British government was retiring their Harrier fleet. Join us for an all day event exploring the legacy of fighter aircraft. Former pilots Paul Tremelling and Mike Sutton will discuss their experiences flying the Harrier and the Typhoon, plus a Q&A and a book signing. Incredible: F-35B vs AV-8B Harrier II Short Takeoff & Vertical Landing

Incredible: F-35B vs AV-8B Harrier II Short Takeoff & Vertical Landing The F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) variant is the world’s first supersonic STOVL stealth aircraft. It is designed to operate from austere bases and a range of air-capable ships near front-line combat zones. It can also take off and land conventionally from longer runways on major bases. The U.S. Marine Corps' F-35B aircraft reached initial operational capability (IOC) on July 31, 2015, when a squadron of 10 F-35Bs was declared ready for world-wide deployment. The AV-8B Harrier II is the U.S. military’s only short takeoff, vertical landing jet aircraft in current inventory. Originally flown in the late 1960s, the Harrier has undergone a series of improvements that have increased safety, range and lethality. The AV-8B is a key component of the Marine Corps’ “all STOVL force” concept, allowing Marines to be supported in austere conditions in expeditionary environments. 22,000 pounds of thrust enable the Harrier II to hover like a helicopter, and then blast forward like a jet at near-supersonic speeds. Like every aircraft in the Marine fleet, this aircraft is used for multiple missions, which include attacking and destroying surface and air targets, escorting helicopters, engaging in air-to-air defense, providing reconnaissance and applying offensive and defensive support with its arsenal of missiles, bombs and an onboard 25mm cannon. Offering the versatility to conduct almost any mission, the Harrier II provides the ideal blend of firepower and mobility to effectively counter enemies engaged by our ground forces. The AV-8B V/STOL strike aircraft was designed to replace the AV-8A and the A-4M light attack aircraft. The Marine Corps requirement for a V/STOL light attack force has been well documented since the late 1950s. Combining tactical mobility, responsiveness, reduced operating cost and basing flexibility, both afloat and ashore, V/STOL aircraft are particularly well suited to the special combat and expeditionary requirements of the Marine Corps. The AV-8BII+ features the APG-65 radar common to the F/A-18, as well as all previous systems and features common to the AV-8BII. The AV-8B will soon be replaced by the F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter.

In this video we take to the skies in the DC Designs AV-8B Harrier II, within Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS). We'll start on the deck of India Foxt Echo's LHA06, the USS America; as usual we'll carry out a full startup and in today's flight, we'll be putting the Harrier through its VTOL paces, with a flight up and back to the Sakhir Air Base. The DC Designs AV-8B is marketed as "accessible to all users" and focuses more on the fun factor, than aiming at being a full-fidelity module. As such, we will be reviewing it accordingly. The version of the aircraft we will be looking at in this video is still a pre-release version and as such, may not fully represent the final version of the aircraft. Space Harrier II (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Sega's 1989 arcade-style rail shooter for the Sega Genesis, Space Harrier II. Played through on the normal difficulty level. Space Harrier II was a launch title for the Japanese Mega Drive in 1988, and it reprised that role for the release of the Genesis in America the following year. As the name would indicate, it is the direct sequel to the original 1985 Space Harrier arcade game, and like its predecessor, was also designed by the legendary Yu Suzuki. Space Harrier was one of Sega's famous super-scalar games that used scaled 2D sprites to approximate 3D graphics, and despite the Genesis's comparatively weak processing power, Space Harrier II did a solid job at recreating the look and feel of the iconic coin-op shooter. The controls are tight and the gameplay feels faithful. Your hero nimbly zips across the screen ready to blast everything to kingdom come, and the speed with which the game moves creates some intense moments - it can be thoroughly exciting to weave through the rows of pillars and trees that regularly get in your way. You can choose to play the stages in any order you like, but all twelve of the main stages have to be finished before you can head into the final boss-rush area. Once every few stages you'll also get to play a bonus round in which your hero takes to a hoverboard to blast stuff for points and 1ups, and not being able to die in these segments makes for a nice diversion from the main game. But however fun it may be, there are a few quirks that stem from the game being on the Genesis. You are limited to just four shots on-screen at any time, so you do occasionally get killed because you couldn't rapid fire off enough shots at an incoming enemy. The fix here is simple - don't miss when you shoot - but that can be difficult for how hectic the screen can get at times. The other quirk is that, no matter how impressive this was for a 1988 console game, the framerate isn't ideal. It is consistent and it is fast enough to make the gameplay feel relatively smooth, but it never feels as fluid as the 32X version of Space Harrier or comparable SNES games that made heavy use of Mode 7 (HyperZone, for example). Still, this would have been a blast to play when it was first released, and it was a real showcase for the power of the new 16-bit hardware. It just hasn't aged quite as well as some of its contemporaries - a fairly common theme among the earliest of Genesis titles. But if you love Space Harrier, this sequel is an extremely fun follow-up that provides more of the same over-the-top action. It's a fun, nostalgic throwback that I'm glad is going to be included on the Genesis Mini system! Too bad it never got updated for stronger hardware - I would have loved to have seen it be given the 32-bit treatment! _ No cheats were used during the recording of this video. The aircraft is primarily employed on light attack or multi-role missions, ranging from close air support of ground troops to armed reconnaissance. The AV-8B is used by the United States Marine Corps, the Spanish Navy, and the Italian Navy. A variant of the AV-8B, the British Aerospace Harrier II, was developed for the British military, while another, the TAV-8B, is a dedicated two-seat trainer. The AV-8B made its maiden flight in November 1981 and entered service with the USMC in January 1985. Later upgrades added a night-attack capability and radar, resulting in the AV-8B(NA) and AV-8B Harrier II Plus versions, respectively. An enlarged version named Harrier III was also studied but not pursued. Approximately 340 aircraft were produced in a 22-year production program that ended in 2003. USMC and Italian Navy AV-8Bs are being replaced by the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II, with the former expected to operate its Harriers until 2025. _ ► More "Army Encyclopedia" videos on: 🤍 TWITEER: 🤍 _ FAIR-USE COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER * Copyright Disclaimer under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, commenting, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
