Procol Harum singer Gary Brooker has died at the age of 76. His birthday was last May. Further information and links below, for those interested. A personal note: Music is a global human cultural thing we have been doing for millennia. Musicians and singers write music based usually on their personal life that resonates with many people. 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' (1967) is no different. I have found this song almost haunting in a way and a personal link (a story for another time perhaps). A couple of years ago I looked into the story behind this song, it was interesting and different to what I was expecting. I am listening to it again several times right now (I have heard this track hundreds and hundreds of times in my lifetime), and now I can hear lots of things I have not quite fully noticed before. Thanks for the music Gary, RIP. There is an 'Obituaries' playlist on this channel under "People (& famous animals) - Obituaries (2016+)" here: 🤍 #GaryBrooker #RIP #Obituary #ProculHarum Wikipedia: Gary Brooker MBE was an English singer-songwriter, pianist and the founder and lead singer of the rock band Procol Harum. Brooker was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2003 Queen's Birthday Honours, in recognition of his charitable services. Wikipedia "A Whiter Shade of Pale" is a song by the English rock band Procol Harum that was issued as their debut record on 12 May 1967. The single reached number 1 in the UK Singles Chart on 8th June and stayed there for six weeks. Without much promotion, it reached number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Song: 🤍

Procol Harum (/ˈproʊkəl ˈhɑːrəm/) are an English rock band formed in 1967. Their best-known recording is the 1967 hit single "A Whiter Shade of Pale", one of the few singles to have sold over 10 million copies. Although noted for their baroque and classical influence, Procol Harum's music is described as psychedelic rock and proto-prog with hints of the blues, R&B, and soul. The band had another 4 Top-30 singles in the UK. In the early years Brooker, Hammond organist Matthew Fisher and Trower were the guiding musical forces behind the band, but after disparities in style became too much and Fisher and Trower left, Brooker was the clear leader until the band broke up in 1977. Brooker started a solo career and released the album No More Fear of Flying in 1979. In 2018, the band was honoured by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when "A Whiter Shade of Pale" was inducted into the new Singles category. #ProcolHarum #GaryBrooker

Procol Harum is best known for its anthem A Whiter Shade Of Pale. It's often overlooked that they had a lot more to offer than just one extraordinary song. In fact, the tune 'A Rum Tale' shares some of the elements that made A Whiter Shade Of Pale so famous. The Hammond organ sound, the 12/8 drum part, a stunningly beautiful melody, and the wonderful vocals of Gary Brooker. R.I.P. Er sang seinen unvergesslichen Hit "A Whiter Shade Of Pale"

In grateful memory to Gary Brooker (1945-2022) "The Cycle" from Gary's second solo album LEAD ME TO THE WATER, originally released 1982. This live version was recorded for Rockpalast TV at the Markthalle in Hamburg, Germany, 18 February 1983. Line up: Gary Brooker - piano, voc Tim Renwick - guitar, voc John Gibblin - bass, voc Tim Cross - synth., voc Henry Spinetti - drums This 1983 Rockpalast performance is the only known gig of the Gary Brooker Band. An edited version of the concert was broadcasted in the same year on German TV. From what I know, "The Cycle" never was played in a Procol Harum concert, but Gary played it on various occasions in the early 80s .

Today we heard the sad news that Gary Brooker has died last Saturday, February 19, 2022. Brooker was a great singer and composer. We all remember his 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' with his group Procol Harum. We remember him on our TopPop channel. Rest in peace, Gary. Gary Brooker, the lead singer of the rock band Procol Harum, whose 1967 hit A Whiter Shade of Pale mesmerised baby boomer fans with its psychedelic melancholy, has died at the age of 76. The pianist, composer and lyricist as well as frontman for the band had been treated for cancer. He died peacefully at home at the weekend. A statement on Procol Harum’s website described Brooker as “a brightly shining, irreplaceable light in the music industry”. It added: “Gary exhibited and developed a highly individual talent. His first single with Procol Harum, 1967’s A Whiter Shade of Pale, is widely regarded as defining the ‘summer of love’, yet it could scarcely have been more different from the characteristic records of that era …. “Gary’s voice and piano were the single defining constant of Procol’s 50-year international concert career. Without any stage antics or other gimmicks he was invariably the most watchable musician in the show.” Gary Brooker MBE (29 May 1945- 19 February 2022) is an English singer, songwriter, pianist and founder and lead singer of the rock band Procol Harum. He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday Honours on 14 June 2003, in recognition of his charitable services. In 1966, Brooker founded Procol Harum with his friend Keith Reid. "A Whiter Shade of Pale" was the worldwide hit for which Procol Harum is best known, but Brooker's melancholic vocals and emotive, eclectic piano playing were a key part of Procol's musical mix for the entire course of the band's career. In the early years Brooker, Hammond organist Matthew Fisher and Trower were the guiding musical forces behind the band, but after disparities in style became too much and Fisher and Trower left, Brooker was the clear leader until the band broke up in 1977. Brooker started a solo career and released the album 'No More Fear of Flying' in 1979. Watch our great music videos ❯ 🤍 More TopPop? Our intrepid duo remember the life and music of Gary Brooker, lead singer and keyboards player of the British band Procol Harum. Brooker died recently at the age of 76. The band sprang to prominence in 1967 with the release of their first single, A Whiter Shade of Pale. It sold 10 million copies worldwide and has been elected to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. The band, however, hasn’t. Brooker was a wonderful singer. In 1971, Procol Harum recorded a live album in Edmonton, Alberta while backed by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Da Camera Singers. It became an unlikely hit, going gold in the U.S., and selling well in Canada.

Gary Brooker, who co-founded and led the English rock band Procol Harum, has died. The group announced the news on its website Tuesday (February 22), writing that Brooker had died peacefully at home amid cancer treatment. “He lit up any room he entered, and his kindness to a multilingual family of fans was legendary,” his bandmates wrote. Gary Brooker was 76. Procol Harum were best known for their debut 1967 single “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” which became an anthem for the exploding counterculture movement. Brooker had established the group with Keith Reid, Ray Royer, David Knights, and Matthew Fisher, having been a busy presence in Britain’s early 1960s rock scene. After the early success of “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” the band remained an influential force on other up-and-coming British rock groups, including the Who and Queen. The band ultimately issued more than a dozen albums. Outside of Procol Harum, Brooker remained a regular collaborator, appearing on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass, Somewhere in England, and Gone Troppo, later touring with Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band in the 1990s. He performed as a member of Eric Clapton’s band for a spell, too, including on 1981’s Another Ticket, but left the group that year. He also made appearances on Kate Bush’s The Red Shoes (1993) and Aerial (2005). Brooker issued three solo albums—No More Fear of Flying, Lead Me to the Water, and Echoes in the Night—between 1979 and 1986. Procol Harum officially dissolved in 1977 after their LP Something Magic, but the band periodically reunited for tours and other appearances over the subsequent decades. The group issued another album, The Prodigal Son, in 1991, followed by The Well’s on Fire in 2003. Procol Harum’s most recent release was 2017’s Novum, where Brooker was the only remaining member of the original lineup still in the band.
