Added Du-Bro skis to an E-Flite Draco 2.0 RC plane. I had to drill out the hole on the ski mount in order for the ski to fit in the stock axle, I also drilled out the collar for the spring bolt for the same reason. First time flying in skis, so I didn’t really know what to expect. Taxi required much more power to move, so make sure your using plenty of up elevator. Didn’t notice too much difference turning while taxiing. Takeoff was fairly uneventful. Held plenty of back pressure on the elevator as I didn’t want it to nose into the snow. Flew pretty much the same, I noticed a bit more climb with a 4000mah battery vs my 5000mah. I checked CG between the two battery’s and felt it was sufficient. I think maybe the lighter battery plus the upward angle of the skis allow it to climb more? I have the skis at a pretty aggressive upward angle, so I’ll have to try it with them a little lower. First landing resulted in a nose over. I landed it like a STOL plane, a 3 point plopper. No issues on subsequent landings as I would ease it to the ground and once on the skis I’d slowly decrease power to let it settle into the snow. Enjoy, have fun, happy flying!

Feeling the desire to tinker, I was curious if applying some aerodynamic treatments to the outboard, non-slatted wing sections on the DRACO wing might get it to fly a touch slower. While it flies plenty slow, my hypothesis was that there could be laminar separation out at the wing tips causing it to wallow at really slow speeds. So, I added some zig-zag turbulator tape to intentionally trip the flow to turbulent at the tips as that would keep the flow attached longer. I think it did help get it a touch slower and get the AoA a little higher as well, but ultimately you can only get so close to 0 airspeed. There is a lot to like about the Draco, the engineering is pretty amazing. I'm not here to bash Horizon Hobbies because I like 95% of their offerings. Who STOL it better?? ;) A friend of mine flew out from Utah to get some stick time on the E-flite DRACO 2.0m and so it was only logical that we see who can get the best STOL performance. Also, as you'll see in the opening, we headed out to a local mountain with his DJI drone to capture some inflight footage. It was pretty incredible (and fun until the inevitable happened!). Too bad I did that!!! Was a great flight otherwise. It was my fault. The second I lowered that throttle on the flare with the nose that high, I knew it was gonna stall. My bad. I will say though, Horizon literally made that whole gear situation PLASTIC!!! They should’ve known it wasn’t going to be good. Even though it’s 10lbs with the battery, a little bit more for metal landing gear would’ve been nice. I bought new shocks for it and everything and just flew it again but the MAIN carbon fiber piece in the gear is awful and is bendable now and maybe even cracked. So I’m going to buy a custom piece for it so it’s stronger! Stay tuned folks! Gonna fly some jets again again soon as well!

I didn't expect this DRACO to fly today as I was walking to my car with my heavy camera and no tripod on hand; I had to film it when I saw Ali Machinchy (well known RC Pilot worldwide) was about to take off with the DRACO, and with my heavy 400mm lens with Sony A9 cagd on windy, gusty day started to document. Ali did an awesome job flying DRACO in a basically- an hurricane force wind (30 knots). Despite my anti-wind noise AKA-dead cat on my camera....the sound was still distorted. Sorry for the poor audio and marginal video. I wanted to get a video out of this highly anticipated plane! This is the first public video of DRACO. I've gotten a lot text from friend to film ALI if he goes out to fly it. This was a quick non-promotional video so you can see how this plane actually fly without editing the actual flights. It is an awesome plane out of the box. I think ,I will pre-order one.
