Filmed at the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne Australia 🤍 - The Hedonistic Imperative outlines how genetic engineering and nanotechnology will abolish suffering in all sentient life. The abolitionist project is hugely ambitious but technically feasible. It is also instrumentally rational and morally urgent. The metabolic pathways of pain and malaise evolved because they served the fitness of our genes in the ancestral environment. They will be replaced by a different sort of neural architecture - a motivational system based on heritable gradients of bliss. States of sublime well-being are destined to become the genetically pre-programmed norm of mental health. It is predicted that the world's last unpleasant experience will be a precisely dateable event. Two hundred years ago, powerful synthetic pain-killers and surgical anesthetics were unknown. The notion that physical pain could be banished from most people's lives would have seemed absurd. Today most of us in the technically advanced nations take its routine absence for granted. The prospect that what we describe as psychological pain, too, could ever be banished is equally counter-intuitive. The feasibility of its abolition turns its deliberate retention into an issue of social policy and ethical choice. What will the world look like when humans step into technological maturity and take evolution into their own hands? Synopsis: No sentient being in the evolutionary history of life has enjoyed good health as defined by the World Health Organization. The founding constitution of the World Health Organization commits the international community to a daringly ambitious conception of health: “a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing”. Health as so conceived is inconsistent with evolution via natural selection. Lifelong good health is inconsistent with a Darwinian genome. Indeed, the vision of the World Health Organization evokes the World Transhumanist Association. Transhumanists aspire to a civilization of superhappiness, superlongevity and superintelligence; but even an architecture of mind based on information-sensitive gradients of bliss cannot yield complete well-being. Post-Darwinian life will be sublime, but “complete” well-being is posthuman – more akin to Buddhist nirvana. So the aim of this talk is twofold. First, I shall explore the therapeutic interventions needed to underwrite the WHO conception of good health for everyone – or rather, a recognisable approximation of lifelong good health. What genes, allelic combinations and metabolic pathways must be targeted to deliver a biohappiness revolution: life based entirely on gradients of well-being? How can we devise a more civilized signalling system for human and nonhuman animal life than gradients of mental and physical pain? Secondly, how can genome reformists shift the Overton window of political discourse in favour of hedonic uplift? How can prospective parents worldwide – and the World Health Organization – be encouraged to embrace genome reform? For only germline engineering can fix the problem of suffering and create a happy biosphere for all sentient beings. Abolitionism -Abolitionism is the bioethical school and movement that endorses the use of biotechnology to maximize happiness and eliminate suffering. "Abolition" is used for the name of this movement, in the context of "the abolition of suffering". Abolitionists propose paradise engineering, i,e., the use of technologies like psychopharmaceuticals and genetic engineering to replace the signalling role of pain as it exists today with information-signalling gradients of well-being. 🤍 🤍

Topics: The Hedonistic Imperative vs. Fun Theory, Negative Utilitarianism, and steps forward in the Abolitionist movement. David’s views are most prominently presented in The Hedonistic Imperative (1995), a manifesto in which he outlines how technologies such as genetic engineering, nanotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and neurosurgery could potentially eliminate all forms of unpleasant experience. He predicts that our descendants will enjoy genetically preprogrammed bliss that is orders of magnitude richer than anything accessible today. Bioconservatives often quote a line from Nietzsche: "That which does not crush me makes me stronger." But alas pain often does crush people: physically, emotionally, morally. Chronic, uncontrolled pain tends to make the victim tired, depressed and weaker. True, some people are relatively resistant to physical distress. For example, high testosterone function may make someone "tougher", more "manly", more resilient, and more able to deal with physically painful stimuli. But such strength doesn't necessarily make the subject more empathetic or a better person. Indeed, if I may quote W. Somerset Maugham, "It is not true that suffering ennobles the character; happiness does that sometimes, but suffering, for the most part, makes men petty and vindictive." Article at SciFuture: 🤍 "To those human beings who are of any concern to me I wish suffering, desolation, sickness, ill-treatment, indignities - I wish that they should not remain unfamiliar with profound self-contempt, the torture of self-mistrust, the wretchedness of the vanquished: I have no pity for them, because I wish them the only thing that can prove today whether one is worth anything or not - that one endures." (The Will to Power, p 481) "You want, if possible - and there is no more insane "if possible" - to abolish suffering. And we? It really seems that we would rather have it higher and worse than ever. Well-being as you understand it - that is no goal, that seems to us an end, a state that soon makes man ridiculous and contemptible - that makes his destruction desirable. The discipline of suffering, of great suffering - do you not know that only this discipline has created all enhancements of man so far?" (Beyond Good and Evil, p 225 ) "I do not point to the evil and pain of existence with the finger of reproach, but rather entertain the hope that life may one day become more evil and more full of suffering than it has ever been." Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) Of course, suffering doesn't always enfeeble and embitter. By analogy, someone who is emotionally depressed may feel that despair is the only appropriate response to the horrors of the world. But the solution to the horrors of the world is not for us all to become depressed. Rather it's to tackle the biology of depression. Likewise, the solution to the horrors of physical pain is not to flagellate ourselves in sympathy with the afflicted. Instead it's to tackle the biological roots of suffering. 🤍 🤍 #Nietzsche #Transhumanism #Philosophy #DavidPearce Subscribe to this Channel: 🤍 Science, Technology & the Future: 🤍
This week our guest is British transhumanist David Pearce, who was one of the co-founders of the World Transhumanist Association, which has since been rebranded as Humanity+. In addition to being on the front lines of the early transhumanist movement, David is also well known for his active work on what he calls the “Hedonistic Imperative,” which seeks to use genetic engineering and nanotechnology to abolish suffering in all sentient life. Obviously this is a very bold agenda, and through this conversation I try to push David on the many nuances and challenges inherent in this goal. Along the way we explore the fundamental questions of transhumanism, whether we’ll ever upload our consciousness into machines, the dangers of giving humans (who are known for their tendency towards addiction) control over their own neurotransmitters, questions around regulation, whether suffering is necessary for appreciating life, and so much more. Does Nozick's experience machine prove anything? Perhaps consider Robert Nozick's thought-experiment in conjunction with Felipe De Brigard's inverse experience machine argument: “If you like it, does it matter if it’s real?” For sure, many subjects say they wouldn't plug into Nozick's Experience Machine; but conversely, many of these same respondents claim they wouldn’t want to unplug from an Experience Machine if told their existing lives were based on a lie. In short, maybe what is really being measured is not simply our (lack of) commitment to hedonism or realism, but rather status quo bias. Even self-avowed classical utilitarians may balk on realising what their own ethics entails. Back in the real world, does the imminence of utopian designer drugs and technologies of immersive VR mean we must all shortly choose between the Red Pill and the Blue Pill, so to speak, i.e. between sordid reality and escapist fantasy worlds of delusion? Not necessarily. For a revolution in genomic medicine is brewing. Enrichment of your reward circuitry, and radical recalibration of the set-point of your hedonic treadmill, promises life based on gradients of intelligent bliss – and without sacrificing your existing preference architecture and core values. Perhaps take the Purple Pill instead? 🤍 Many thanks for watching! Transhumanist David Pearce discusses consciousness, psychedelics, panpsychism, paradise engineering, abolishing suffering, death and immortality. My guest today is David Pearce, a transhumanist and author of the Hedonistic Imperative. David's views about consciousness set him apart from many other transhumanists. David believes that consciousness is fundamental to the universe and cannot be explained within a materialist paradigm. Whether or not this is the case, David is confident that the unity of consciousness is facilitated by a quantum unity occurring in the brain. As a result, David is skeptical about the possibility of classical computation-based “mind uploading” or truly conscious artificial intelligences arriving in the foreseeable future. But while our descendents will continue to be biological, they will however be dramatically different to us, not only with their indefinite lifespan, physical fortitude, and resilience to disease, but most significantly, in the structure of their minds. According to David, our great grandchildren will inhabit profoundly blissful mind spaces which exist exclusively “above hedonic zero”. They will have abandoned retributive emotions such as jealousy and anger, and their ordinary conscious states will be comparable to today’s peak experiences. Most significantly for David, our descendants will set their sites on abolishing suffering in all sentient life on this planet, and finally, the entire reachable universe. We discussed these subjects and more in our conversation. Whether or not you find David’s vision hard to believe, this will be an interesting episode! He approaches ethical issues from a lexical negative utilitarian perspective. Pearce maintains a series of websites devoted to transhumanist topics and what he calls the "hedonistic imperative", a moral obligation to work towards the abolition of suffering in all sentient life. His self-published internet manifesto, The Hedonistic Imperative (1995), outlines how pharmacology, genetic engineering, nanotechnology and neurosurgery could converge to eliminate all forms of unpleasant experience from human and non-human life, replacing suffering with "gradients of bliss". Pearce calls this the "abolitionist project". In this episode, we talk about transhumanism, the hedonistic imperative, and the abolitionist project. We first get into concepts like negative utilitarianism, hedonism, and gradients of bliss. We discuss the goals of the abolitionist project, and the living beings it would target. We talk about the different technological approaches to abolishing suffering, like pharmacology, genetic engineering, nanotechnology, neurosurgery, becoming cyborgs, Nozick’s experience machine, and immortality. We discuss to what extent these technologies are sufficiently well-developed, or if we would need to wait more time. We discuss why social, economic, and political reforms are not enough. We tackle questions regarding how our human experience would change. We discuss how we should deal with people who would prefer to opt out of the abolitionist project. Finally, we ask if we have less suffering in the world nowadays. What is the most wonderful experience you have had in your life? Now imagine if every moment in your life could be as good as this experience, or even better. Other things being equal, wouldn’t it be nice if we had higher quality lives? Panel discussion at the 'Stepping Into the Future' conference featuring David Pearce and Andrés Gómez Emilsson. 🤍 For much of history talk of ‘paradise engineering’ would simply be dismissed as utopian dreaming. Though throughout the course of civilization humanity has been trying to improve it’s lot by manipulating it’s environment in innumerable different ways – yet, to be honest on the inside we’re not significantly happier now than ancestors on the African savanna – certainly not if suicide, depression and marital breakup statistics etc. are taken seriously. A Non-trivial Pursuit of Happiness - Paradise Engineering with David Pearce :-) - Full article: 🤍 It is non-trivial for a couple of reasons: a) the pursuit of this vision of happiness is not trivial - it is likely to be a very challenging endeavor (though totally worthy of the effort) b) the aim is to achieve non-trivial modes of happiness, kinds of information-sensitive gradients of bliss (as opposed to being stuck in a narrow-local maximum of ecstatic stupor) Imagine that the best experience possible - and imagine that it would be lower than tomorrows floor. It may be that our decedents will have the chance to re-engineer themselves to be able to experience well-being far beyond what we can experience and imagine today. Full blown paradise engineering is likely not something that people alive now should expect, though if we are ethically serious, we should be investigating ways to redesign our default mode of being to flourish in states of bliss. #paradise #engineering Autosomal genetic therapy 🤍 - The Hedonistic Imperative outlines how genetic engineering and nanotechnology will abolish suffering in all sentient life. Subscribe to this Channel: 🤍 Science, Technology & the Future: 🤍 Humanity+: 🤍
