An explanation of the molecular geometry for the ClO2 (Chlorine dioxide) including a description of the ClO2 bond angles. The electron geometry for the Chlorine dioxide is also provided. The ideal bond angle for the Chlorine dioxide is 109.5° since it has a Bent molecular geometry. Experimentally we would expect the bond angle to be approximately 117.6°. To determine the molecular geometry, or shape for a compound like ClO2, we complete the following steps: 1) Draw the Lewis Structure for the compound. 2) Predict how the atoms and lone pairs will spread out when the repel each other. 3) Use a chart based on steric number (like the one in the video) or use the AXN notation to find the molecular shape. To balance NaClO2 + H2O = ClO2 + NaOH + H2 you'll need to be sure to count all of atoms on each side of the chemical equation. Once you know how many of each type of atom you can only change the coefficients (the numbers in front of atoms or compounds) to balance the equation for Sodium chlorite + Water. Important tips for balancing chemical equations: Only change the numbers in front of compounds (the coefficients). Never change the numbers after atoms (the subscripts). A simple method for drawing Lewis structures in 4 steps. For theory and examples of Lewis structures please see: 🤍 🤍 Let us consider the case of chlorine dioxide (ClO2). Chlorine dioxide is used mainly for bleaching of wood pulp, for bleaching of flour and for the disinfection of municipal drinking water: Step 1: Connect the atoms with single bonds. Chlorine is the central atom. Step 2: Calculate the # of electrons in π bonds (multiple bonds) using formula (1) in the first link above. Where n in this case is 3 since ClO2 consists of three atoms. Where V = (6 + 6 + 7 ) = 19 Therefore, P = 6n + 2 – V = 6 * 3 + 2 – 19 = 1 So there is only 1 π electron in ClO2 🤍 So the structure of Step 1 is the Lewis structure. Electrons are placed around each atom so that the octet rule is obeyed. Since the number of valence electrons is odd the octet rule will not be obeyed in all the atoms.
