As night falls on certain beaches around the world, the waves glow with an eerie blue light, neon dots that make it look as though stars are washing up on shore. What you’re seeing is actually millions of microscopic organisms called bioluminescent phytoplankton. Some of the most spectacular photographs have been captured from one location, Vaadhoo Island, Maldives, which has been nick named the sea of stars. The Maldives is a tropical nation in the Indian Ocean composed of 26 ring-shaped atolls, which are made up of more than 1,000 coral islands. On Friday 10th July 2020, Barfleur Beach in Jervis Bay came to life after dark with an amazing display of bioluminescence (Microalgae Noctiluca scintillans). This footage was captured on a Nikon Z6 mirrorless camera using a 50mm prime lens. This camera has excellent low light performance however even it was pushed to its limits in order to capture this amazing spectacle. It's only been in the last few years that we've had cameras capable of capturing images like this after dark. This video is for anyone who wanted to see the bio but missed it, anyone who hasn't seen bio before or anyone who just wants to relive this amazing experience.

Mosquito Bay or Bio Bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico is an amazing place. It is the brightest glowing bioluminescent bay in the world. I jumped on a few kayak tours during the night of a new moon and saw this incredible light show. Honestly, it was more amazing that I imagined. I had read a review or two, but wasn't sure if it was worth the trip to the island. It was. The bay is extremely bright, and until now, it was very hard to capture on camera. I recently picked up a Sony a7s which is a beast in low light, and was impressed with that it could capture. This has rarely ever been caught on Camera. The government is doing a good job at keeping this place pristine. In some areas of the world you can jump in, splash around, use gasoline engines, and generally just destroy the ecosystem these little guys live in. Here in Vieques, Puerto Rico, you are not allowed to swim, or use gasoline. Nearby light pollution has to be kept to a minimum, and there give Bio Bay some days off now and again to recover. This is probably why it remains the brightest in the world. High Five for sustainable eco tourism. I wish everywhere was this forward thinking. This was one of my best travel experiences. Like I said, it's worth the trip! On the western tip of Holbox Island, just a few hours from Cancun, is a beautiful beach called Punta Cocos. This beach is one of the most photographed around Cancun during sunset because it is facing west (rare for a beach in Riviera Maya), and also is home to the beach hammocks that make for great silhouette pictures. Long after the sun sets, this beach still remains popular, not for parties, but for another attraction entirely; Bioluminescence. It becomes a glowing beach, and it's amazing to see. Bioluminescent plankton are found here in one of the highest concentrations in Mexico. The water is very shallow, and even 20 meters or so away from shore, it's still below your knees. This allows these little glowing animals go accumulate in large numbers during the summer. We visited in May, but were told the best season to see this phenomenon was in July or August after they have had a couple months of summer heat to reproduce. It is really incredible to see. These animals use light to scare away predators. In the ocean, there's usually always something bigger that can eat you, and by lighting up whoever is trying to eat them, they can attract an even larger fish to scare their attacker away. There are lots of beautiful islands around the Yucatan peninsula, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, But Isla Holbox, is just beginning to get popular. Come visit now, or preferably in July or August, and see one of the best light shows in Mexico. Many of the locations I feature on this channel are undiscovered. If you go, remember to take care of these places. Sometimes nature puts on a very extravagant display of magical beauty in places that are already among the most beautiful in the world. With the help of tiny organisms, and there are more than one species, the water near the coast can glow blue, green, or red every time it is disturbed. This happens mostly in the tropics, where warm water rich in nutrients encourages the growth of these tiny algae, but it also happens in colder waters, such as Jersey Island in the UK or San Juan Island in Washington State. This spectacular colorful display attracts thousands of tourists, who feel like they are swimming among the stars. Beach From Hong Kong to California, there are some unique and magnificent beaches that glow neon blue at night. This natural phenomenon is mainly caused by phytoplankton, a type of microalgae that float at the surface of the ocean water. They emit a bright blue light after they become agitated by wave movements or nearby swimming fish. These bioluminescent phytoplankton are mostly found in salt water bodies because one of the chemicals needed for producing this bioluminescent reaction is not found in freshwater. This phenomenon of glowing water happens all the time but it is visible in low light. While recording a short film at Pasir Ris beach, a group of university students chanced upon something “magical”: Glowing neon blue waves crashing upon the shore, in what is known as a “luminescent algal bloom”.
