The Indian government’s decision to ban a BBC documentary about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role in the 2002 Gujarat riots, which left more than a thousand people dead, has become its own story. It has drawn global attention to Modi’s record in office and the subsequent decline of media freedom in the world’s largest democracy. Contributors: Maya Mirchandani - Journalist, The Wire Mitali Saran - Writer and columnist Shruti Kapila - Professor of Indian history and global political thought, University of Cambridge Sanjay Kapoor - Editor, HardNews Magazine On our radar: Investigations by Open Democracy and the Financial Times have uncovered how libel lawyers in London helped Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner mercenary group and one of Vladimir Putin’s key allies, to go after his critics, including journalists, in the British courts. Producer Tariq Nafi talks us through the findings. Striking Back: United Kingdom's unions vs the media: With the United Kingdom in a state of political disarray, a wave of work stoppages has put trade unions, and the media’s treatment of them, into the spotlight. A remote Mauritian island is being quietly transformed into a military hub for India's navy. That’s what we found using satellite pictures, shipping data, financial documents, and images from a barely accessible island about 1100 km north of Mauritius. The Island of Secrets also shows how the construction project on Agaléga has the potential to uproot the lives of its 300 residents in order to make way for a military facility. Residents worry that what happened on the Mauritian island of Diego Garcia in the 1960s will happen to them. The Mauritian government responded to this film by restating its position that there is “no agreement” with India to set up a military a base in Agaléga. It said that construction work on the island is designed to improve “inadequate infrastructure facilities”. The government also stated that it has no intention of displacing people living on the island. India’s Ministry of Defence and Ministry of External Affairs did not respond to our request for comment. 🤍AJIUnit #IslandOfSecrets Find more about our content at ajiunit.com If you want to provide a tip on serious wrongdoing and corruption, contact the Investigative Unit on +974 5080 0207 (WhatsApp/Signal), or find other ways to reach out on aljazeera.com/tips. When the newly formed Israeli government announced that it wanted to change the way courts work in Israel, alarm bells rang in Washington. In places where court decisions may be vetoed by politicians, it is taken as a sign that a country is becoming less democratic, like Hungary. University of Michigan Professor Juan Cole tells host Steve Clemons that although nothing will fundamentally shift in the United States-Israel relationship, Democratic Party leaders would prefer it if Israel had more "shared values" with the US to justify the high levels of Washington's support. Undercover reporters with the I-Unit expose how a former street mafia claims to have captured a state. The brother of Bangladesh’s army chief boasts that he can use police and paramilitary units to abduct rivals and earn millions in bribes. Documents obtained by the I-Unit also show that head of the army has helped a convicted killer evade justice. They included Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Home Minister, Inspector General, Police Commissioner and all four Ahmed Brothers. None responded to our inquiries.
