Michael F. Driscoll, M.D., medical oncologist answers the question, What is adenocarcinoma? Adenocarcinoma is the cell type that forms the cancer. The entire gastrointestinal tract is filled with adenoid cells and the adenoid cells are mucin-producing cells which are just a kind of mucus which our gastrointestinal tract needs to transit food and things like that. It's the adenoid cells themselves that become abnormal and there's some degree of DNA damage that happens to the adenoid cell itself and turns that into an adenocarcinoma, which is a cancer of those cell types. Over time, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD, can lead to Barrett's esophagus, dysplasia or even esophagus cancer (adenocarcinoma.) Sonam Puri, MD, Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT, discusses the testing procedures for the two types of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Dr. Puri speaks on the value of broad-based DNA/RNA molecular testing on any patient with metastatic adenocarcinoma at the time of diagnosis. However, this testing is limited for patients with early-stage disease. For squamous cell lung cancer, a PD-L1 test is conducted which acts as a biomarker for immunotherapy response. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2021 Virtual Meeting.

Karan Pandya, MD, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, describes the differences between small bowel adenocarcinoma (SBA) and colorectal cancer (CRC), which both often have similar treatment regimens. In an analysis of 823 patients with small bowel adenocarcinoma, non-BRAF V600E mutations were more frequent and unlike in CRC, the majority of HER2 mutations were point mutations. Despite the resulting differential mutations present restricting treatment options, RSPO3 fusions enable the possible use of Porcupine inhibitors and the use of immunotherapies such as checkpoint inhibitors represent possible therapies for SBA. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2022 Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL.
