He served in the military for 37 years, winning the Vishisht Seva Medal for commanding a battalion during the Kargil War and the Sena Medal for distinguished service in commanding a battalion during counterinsurgency drives. He has authored as many as 36 books, including on information warfare and psychological operations. In conversation with Abhinandan Sekhri, he talks about how the Army is represented in the media and popular culture, human rights violations, psychological warfare, collateral damage in war. Speaking about psychological warfare, Bakshi says, “There are two negative emotions in combat. These are disorganising emotions. One is fear, the other is guilt.” He claims the Indian Army has been the victim of a sustained campaign painting it as one of the worst perpetrators of human rights violations. “Where human rights stem from compassion, I’m all for it,” he says. “But where they’re used as a pretext to hamper operations, induce guilt and to make sure the insurgent gets away, that I’m totally against.” Discussing his latest book, The Saraswati Civilization, Bakshi says the British colonial historiography had an ingrained bias, for it was employed to justify foreign rule to the Indian population. “There is an amazing level of cultural continuity that comes down to us from that ancient era,” he adds. Pavan Varma has worn many hats in his long career: he was a Rajya Sabha MP, an advisor to Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, a writer, a seasoned diplomat, an official government spokesperson, the press secretary to the President—and that's just to name a few. Currently, he's the national general secretary of the Janata Dal (United) and the author of a new book, Chanakya's View: Understanding India in Transition, a collection of essays ranging from the issues of Ram Mandir and the Sardar Patel statue to India's position at the international level. In conversation with Newslaundry’s Abhinandan Sekhri, Pavan talks about Article 370, the bigotry in party politics and the importance of facts in this day and age, among other things. He believes that national symbols serve a purpose in society and although thousands of crores could be spent elsewhere if not on the statue of Sardar Patel, the hegemony of the Nehru-Gandhi family should be dealt with properly. Discussing the Ram Mandir dispute, Pavan says, "Every year we have the Ramleela which costs lakhs of rupees. One argument could be you could use that money to distribute dal and bread to the poor who can't have two meals a day. But then there are things that happen in practised faiths where you do require certain symbols of devotion, of prayer, of assurance—and a temple is essentially a repository of all three of these." He talks about how this book is different from his works, and also about the kind of research that went into writing it. When Chetan is asked about his political stance, he explains that his outlook towards the world has gradually changed over time and that he isn't as angry as he used to be a decade ago. Abhinandan then goes on to ask Chetan why he insists on playing the underdog despite his 'bestseller author' status? Chetan then talks about heartbreaks and rejections that he has faced in his romantic life. He says that it was difficult for him to move on and that there should be more dialogue on these topics as rejection is a serious issue faced by youngsters.
