Sophie Fiennes, Betty Sue Flowers and Noël Carroll discuss the relationship between narratives and reality. Watch the full debate at 🤍 From fairy tales to Harry Potter, from Avatar to James Bond, we love fantasy and expect our books and films to take us there. Yet at the same time we want our poems and plays, novels and movies, to reflect life and reality. Should our narratives be seeking to uncover reality or be seeking escape from it? Or are both goals impossible? Are we on the one hand unable to create a narrative that tells it how it is, and on the other incapable of making a fantasy that does not reflect our current circumstances? And if so, why? #RealityIntoFantasy #NoelCarroll #SophieFiennes Director and producer of The Pervert's Guide to Cinema Sophie Fiennes, leading figure in contemporary philosophy of art Noël Carroll and myths expert Betty Sue Flowers explore whether narratives should reflect reality, or escape it. Story telling is dangerously seductive, from rewards in the afterlife - think suicide bombers - to fear-mongering conspiracy theories. But this stems from a universal weakness for narrative. His work VSPRS is his most outrageous yet one critic calling it "the weirdest, most shocking and provocative dance performance you will ever see." The dance, made up of ten dancers and ten musicians, is performed to Claudio Monteverdi's Mariavespers, one of the most important pieces in the history of European religious music. The artists trained by immersing themselves in images of psychiatric distress, and together carve out an extremely physical and graphic performance immersed in religious and sexual imagery. In Sophie Fiennes' mesmerising documentary, the dimensions of ecstasy and trauma that form the core of the performance are masterfully captured, whilst interviews with Platel and the dancers themselves add an extra layer of insight to the performances.

Watch the full debate at 🤍 Claire van Kampen, Sophie Fiennes, Ammar Kalia and Brian Eno debate the value of the new. The new has driven culture for hundreds of years, from the aristocrats who awaited Mozart's latest compositions to our obsession with the latest Netflix drama today. Access to art was once limited. Now access is instant and almost limitless. In this unparalleled space, should we escape the tyranny of the new and seek out the best from the unknown and uncelebrated, from distant lands and other times? Is art not about the novel but about lasting value? Or is the new, though limited by place and time, necessarily more vital than the past? #art #culture #IAItv Musical pioneer Brian Eno is co-founder of the art rock group Roxy Music and producer of recordings by the likes of David Byrne, U2, David Bowie, John Cale, and Robert Fripp. He released his long-awaited album, The Ship, earlier this year. Claire Louise van Kampen is an English director, composer and playwright. Her composing credits include the music for Mark Rylance's 1989 performance as Hamlet and music for productions of the plays Days and Nights and Boeing-Boeing. These personal songs also link to Grace's family life, as the film takes us on a holiday road trip across Jamaica, where her family roots and the story of her traumatic childhood are uncovered. In Jamaican patois, 'Bloodlight' is the red light that illuminates when an artist is recording and 'Bami' means bread, the substance of daily life. Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami weaves together the layers of Grace Jones' public and private life, as she moves effortlessly between different facets: she is gypsy, artist and partying hedonist, warm and funny but also a fierce and tenacious businesswoman. The performance continues to move thematically though the film, with Love Is The Drug acting like an aria, bringing the film to its final and most touching scenes. This is a Grace we have not seen before, someone who reminds us of what it is to dare to be truly alive.
