Learn how to get back in a canoe / Flip and Re-Enter if you find it takes on water or capsizes. Used in deep qater when your alone / solo! Large and Heavier Canoes are hard to flip. This is a technique that's a bit easier to manage. This is good for canoeing for beginners or advanced canoeists. It's used if you find yourself far from shore and cant swim to it. Since this canoe is about 16'6 long - the Capistrano Flip Method doesn't really work for me. In this video I show how to empty a swamped canoe, flip it over, and then get in - all in deep water. Best piece of advice I can give here is to practice the technique so you can stay calm and perform it if you ever need to! If your looking for the Bailing Pouch I use, you can find it here: 🤍 00:00 Introduction 00:29 Performing the Flip 01:00 Bailing the Canoe 01:48 How to Re-Enter A Canoe Thats Swamped I use a canoe bailer, and do solo canoe rescue techniques, not really solo canoe reviews but more deep water canoe rescue. Here's how to effectively paddle a canoe without a partner.
A life changing canoe trip through the ancient Temagami wilderness. This is a story about the stillness that can be found by going alone into nature. Dedicated to legendary Canadian canoeist and filmmaker Bill Mason, one of my greatest inspirations. Music by Adam Ruzzo 🤍 Film produced by Matt Steeves 🤍
Winter camping in a snow storm! I tagged onto a trip that Johnny planned at the last minute. The temps have been near 0c in NS so we have water and fortunately it didn't ice over while we were out. The goal of this trip was just to get out into the woods and cook some good food and see how our gear can withstand a snow storm. The forecast was for about 15-25 cm of snow... I would say it was in the are of 15cm. It never really dumped down, but was sustained for most of the trip. I took the tent and slept amazingly with my Nemo Tensor and Hammock Gear TQ... it was only -2c over night. Johnny was staying for 2 nights but I only had time for one. The wind on the lake was worse than I had expected, and being on the second largest lake in NS (mainland), I was a little worried about the return trip solo. I found out that my leave from work was cancelled for the return trip day (had to work that night), so I decided to leave extra early in order to hopefully get back home and not be storm stayed. The meal was far better than I would have imagined. Bacon wrapped chicken breast stuffed with brie, with rice, peppers and mushroom. The brie and bacon grease ended up making a broth and it all came out a bit like a stew in the cast iron oven. I wish I could have got better video of it, but it was dark and steamy when it came to filming it, but you may get an idea of how it came out. Johnny did make it out the following day and said the wind dropped a bit for him as well. As always, thanks for watching!
Join me on this early spring solo canoe camping adventure in a hot tent. I paddled my Swift Prospector 14 pack boat to a remote island campsite and set up my Luxe Hexpeak 2P tent and 3W titanium wood stove for an overnighter alone. It was a great time with a delicious morning breakfast. Spring canoe camping reminds me of the fall colors that I missed so much throughout winter. During the closures caused from the pandemic, I spent more time in the water 1 on 1 with paddler friends trying to make their best purchase decision. Seems like we will start getting back to “demo days” soon but for many, the internet has become the place to do initial research. The goal of this video is to show you entry and intermediate solo paddlers trying out the Northstar Solos. I’ve come to find that even my best hunches one which canoe is going to be the winner isn’t always the case. That’s why these are fun! I always learn! The Northstar Magic, NW Solo, Trillium, Phoenix, Firebird and ADK Solo are all shown in this video.
Welcome to CANOE CAMP CLIMB. Where we take you on our canoeing, camping, and hiking adventures in New York's Adirondack Mountains and beyond. Let's discover these amazing places together. Our lightweight solo canoes allow us to reach remote backcountry waters and mountains where we like to tent and hammock camp. We also use our RV as a cushy basecamp for day tripping. We hope to see you out there. IMPORTANT NOTE ON DRONE USE Before launching a drone be aware of the FAA rules on usage and restrictions. The Adirondacks also have their own set of rules regarding drone use. Outside of the technical rules... as a basic human courtesy... I also take special care to make sure I am not interrupting anyone's camping or nature experience. If people are around in these peaceful places... the drone stays grounded. The River Spey in Scotland runs 178km from source to sea. Join me on this Solo Canoe Trip as I attempt to traverse 123km from Kingussie to Spey Bay over 5 nights of canoeing and wild camping. Dream campsites nestled in ancient forests await to be discovered… using both my hammock and tent to take advantage of the landscape. Look out for wildlife such as salmon swimming upstream to spawn, deer, herons and the endangered freshwater pearl mussel. Fighting the elements of wind and rain along the way, and navigating whitewater rapids and fallen trees, will be part of the challenge. In this video, I will cover some basics around the Canadian Canoe and some solo paddle strokes.
In this short video I highlight the subtle difference between the "J" stroke and the Canadian stroke. The "J" is very efficient but it can be hard on your wrist and forearms on a long trip. The Canadian stroke is more relaxing. Eh! My Amazon Stores USA 🤍 Canada 🤍 Where you can find lots of the gear that I use. Join me for an amazing canoe trip through the Temagami Wilderness. What a perfect place to paddle and portage with the beautiful fall colours in full bloom. Canoeing, portaging, fishing and camping in one of Ontario's most amazing canoe destinations. Sounds good to me.
American Freestyle canoeing is the art of paddling a canoe on flat water with perfect control of its movements. The canoe is usually leaned over to the side to help the boat turn sharply and efficiently and paddle strokes are taken on either side of the canoe depending on the individual move. Balance, paddle placement and turn initiation are a few keys to this control. Since the movements seem dance-like, some practice this art timed to music, which is the ultimate in control.
A trip from Athabasca Glacier to the Arctic Ocean, 4000km canoeing down three major rivers of Canada. The Athabasca River, Slave River and MacKenzie River, the last being the longest in Canada at 1800km. I began this trip alone on June 21 2020, planning to take two to three months. The starting point was Athabasca Crossing which is the head waters of the river, planning to follow the water all the way to the Beaufort Sea and then east another short paddle to the village of Tuktoyaktuk.

Call it a challenge or call it a beat-down, either way I was warned that the upper half of the Two Hearted River might result in my worst canoe trip of the year. I was told of steep muddy banks, a tangled shore, an over-abundance of log jams and a historic 21,135 acre burn area from the 2012 Duck Lake Forest Fire. That was all I needed to hear. I was definitely paddling the Two Hearted over Mother's Day Weekend.
This short film from canoeist Bill Mason explains clearly how to locate a deep water channel by reading the rapids and how to apply paddling strokes and manoeuvres to steer the canoe where you want it to go. It also depicts what happens if you "wipe out" in a turbulent rapid and shows you how to survive the swim. A little time in one of my competitor’s solo canoes! #WenonahCanoes #solocanoe #canoe #canoeing #bendingbranches #canoepaddle #paddleinstruction I often get asked when presenting a Northstar Canoe about my thoughts on some of the Wenonah Solo Canoes out there. First off, I love the folks at Wenonah Canoes and with my daughter being born in Winona and my family living just 20 miles upriver on the Mississippi, I can’t help but wish the best for their company. Secondly, their canoes are so very different than Northstar’s and so are the paddlers that pursue them in most cases. So, it’s all Good! Let’s make the solo canoe pie bigger!!! I’m a Northstar Canoe paddler and fanatic but we need more companies preaching the beauty of the path of the canoe paddle and Wenonah has been doing just this for over 50 years. This new Solo from them will definitely find a place in the market. They are making a push for fishing on this model. With the aluminum trim with mounting slots it will be easy to outfit for just this purpose. I used a brand new to market Bending Branches Black Pearl Straight canoe paddle. Super excited about this for its razor sharp knifelike in-water return. The grip felt great and the blade seems a perfect size for freestyle and just general paddling. Bending Branches Black Pearl ST available in late ‘21 or 2022: Blade size: 8.25” x 18.75” 105 sq in Weight: 16 oz 100% carbon grip and shaft, Foam core carbon blade Freestyle Palm Grip Here are the stats on the Wenonah Basswood Solo direct from the company: 15'7" x 31.25"; 34 lbs The ultimate backcountry fishing machine. The Basswood series offers massive stability and capacity and comes standard with Wenonah’s revolutionary VersiGunwale integrated gunwale track system. Offered exclusively in our proven ultralight aramid construction. The Basswood Solo is a stable, lightweight tripping canoe that’s ready to outfit with your favorite fishing accessories. Standard VersiGunwales are compatible with a wide range of rod holders, fish finder mounts and kayak fishing accessories. The Basswood’s high volume and hull is comfortable for large loads and landing big fish solo. More stable than the Wilderness and more maneuverable than longer solos like the Prism, the Basswood Solo is perfect for the serious wilderness angler and backcountry adventurer. Gear up for backcountry fishing with the Basswood Solo.
June 12th, 2021 I embarked on a trip of a life time, a 34 day epic solo canoe trip trough the boreal forest of Woodland Caribou Provincial Park.
