The Police in Jinja are holding several members of the National Unity Platform party, who had gathered at the local YMCA for prayers, yesterday. However, the Police stormed the prayer meeting and then used teargas to disperse the meeting. The members, mostly dressed in party dress and regalia, had arrived in Jinja from Iganga, where they were joined by others from Kampala. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has made a commitment to provide a comprehensive response on the matter of missing persons, especially the supporters of the opposition National Unity Platform political party. On Wednesday, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga tabled in Parliament a list of several persons who he said have not been seen since November 2020 as presidential election campaigns began. Premier Nabbanja's commitment followed a meeting held on Friday, 30th September 2022 chaired by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa. Security agencies have issued a fourteen-day ultimatum to individuals who own attire and any articles of clothing that bare a resemblance to uniforms worn by security agents, to surrender them to police. This directive comes at a time when the country is witnessing attacks on security installations and personnel. Internal Affairs Minister Maj Gen Kahinda Otafire has instructed the director of Criminal Intelligence to investigate Uganda's leading opposition politicians over what he has described as treason.
