Born of a merger from two much older manufacturers, the company was eventually purchased by Boeing. Despite its relatively short time as an independent player, McDonnell Douglas made significant contributions to aircraft and aviation development. But… How did the company start? And why did they ultimately merge with Boeing? A new generation of wide-body airliners like the Boeing 747 introduced for 1970’s increased passenger capacity at a time when air travel was becoming more affordable. In 1971, McDonnell Douglas introduced their first airliner wide-body airliner, the DC-10. But few months later, rival aircraft builder Lockheed introduced their new wide body airliner, the L-1011. The DC-10 and L-1011 were similar aircraft aimed at similar segments of the market. The DC-10 incorporated many existing narrow body technologies from earlier DC-8 and DC-9’s. Focusing on simplicity and reliability, McDonnell Douglas took a technologically cautious approach in an era of rapid technological change, and this helped accelerate the DC-10’s development. This design approach, in part, helped McDonnell Douglas beat rival Lockheed to the market and the DC-10 was soon outselling the L1011. But after just a few years in service, the DC-10 would go from being pride of airlines, to a plane some people thought twice about flying. A series of accidents during the 1970’s, some of which were attributed to the plane’s design, shrouded the DC-10 in controversy. McDonnell Douglas found itself facing extraordinary accusations that it had rushed the plane’s development, leading to inadequate, even negligent design decisions. Damage to the DC-10’s reputation would peak in 1975, after the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily suspended the DC-10’s Type certificate. It would take years for the DC-10’s reputation to recover, and by the 1980s, McDonnell Douglas was facing even bigger challenges. The market had really only been big enough for one tri-jet and that ensured that neither would become a true commercial success. Despite its troubled start, the DC-10 would fly for over 40 years serving with some of the world’s largest airlines. In spite of tragic early accidents statically the DC-10’s safety record would go on to be comparable to other wide bodies of the era. #DC10 #McdonnellDouglas #Trijet #Airplane Select new footage provided courtesy the AP Archive: AP Archive website: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 YouTube: 🤍 and 🤍 Special Thanks to 'Classic Airliners & Vintage Pop Culture' Youtube channel for letting us sample amazingly retro DC-10 commercials. «Death Cruiser 10», these are the top 5 deadliest McDonnell Douglas DC-10 crashes of all time.. Keep in mind that the DC-10 was, and still is, an amazing aircraft that still, even 50 years later is still in operation. These crashes were not McDonnell Douglas’ fault (Except THY 981), they were causes by either poor maintance not approved by McDonnell Douglas, pilot error or engine failure. If you liked this video, I’d appreciate if you could check out my channel, I make videos like this weekly. Sources: Wikipedia, Snl.no and Air Crash Investigation-episodes AA 191, UA 232 and THY 981.
The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 was one of the most visually striking aircraft of its time. Developed from the earlier DC-10, its distinctive three-engine configuration helped it to stand out wherever it flew. While it promised a lot, the MD-11, particularly in its passenger configuration, failed to live up to expectations. This is the story of its rise and fall. The most iconic airplanes ever built? These five airplanes are among my personal favorite airplanes and whenever one of them is expected nearby I try to film them in action. The Boeing 727, Dc10, Md11, L1011 and TU154 are slowly becoming extinct which is extremly sad. I filmed the L1011 in 2011 and it was my last encounter with this aircraft type. Currently there is just one L1011 active in the world. Last june I filmed this red Boeing 727 of 2Exel Aviation at Maastricht which is the reason for this video. I didn` t want to upload a 45 sec. clip of the 727 departure and that` s why I embed it in this "Tristar" compilation. The first MD11 clip might be my personal favorite video clip in my entire video collection. Western Global had an awesome timing arriving at Liege right after a heavy rainfall. Now it` s your turn. Let me know which of these five special airplanes you like most. Write it in the comments. New videos every tuesday and friday.
This MD-11 of Western Global performed a very fast departure at Liege a few weeks ago. The Aicraft flew ferry from Liege to Charleston AB to perform a military charter for the US Air Force. Western Global is owned by the former owner of Southern Air, a well known airline from the US which used to operate several Boeing 747`s. It` s a pleasure to see an airline operating more than 10 MD-11` s in 2017. Western Global also operates two Boeing 747-400` s but the MD-11 is the flagship of the fleet. Fetarued MD-11`s: 1.) Western Global 2.) Ethiopian Airlines 3.) Centurion Cargo 4.) Martinair Cargo 5.) UPS 6.) Lufthansa Cargo 7.) KLM 8.) World Airways 9.) Aeroflot 10.) Sky Lease Cargo 11.) Fedex Thanks for watching.

The McDonnell Douglas X-36 Tailless Fighter Agility Research Aircraft was built in the late '90s in collaboration with NASA with the objective to reduce weight and drag while increasing range, maneuverability, and, most importantly, survivability. To achieve all these goals, they decided to get rid of the traditional empennage found on most aircraft, a feat that many contractors and government organizations had tried for decades. But that wasn't its only impressive asset. The aircraft had a remotely-piloted design through which it was flown by a pilot sitting safely on a chair in a ground-based virtual cockpit with a camera mounted on the plane to provide the view. The unique configuration, which also gave it a one-of-a-kind futuristic look, helped the program move along in a short window of time and be ready in less than two years. Its future now rested on either NASA or McDonnell Douglas, which were both impressed with the invaluable, yet niche, knowledge it provided during its testing phases... - Join Dark Skies as we explore the world of aviation with cinematic short documentaries featuring the biggest and fastest airplanes ever built, top-secret military projects, and classified missions with hidden untold true stories. Which of these planes do you like more? The Boeing 777 or the McDonnell Douglas Md-11? Write it in the comments. In addition to that please tell me which planes I should compare next. You decide !! It` s time for another "aviation battle". A few weeks ago someone came up with the idea to compare the B777 withe Md11. A good idea in my opinion cause both were built in the same decade and they both started as competitors. I decided to use only clips of the B777-200. The B777-300 is too big to compare it with the MD-11 The Boeing 777 had its first flight in 1994, since then 1360 planes have been built. The Md-11 had its inaugural flight in 1990 and since then only 200 aircrafts have left the production line. The Boeing 777 is a family of long-range wide-body twin-engine jet airliners developed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. It is the world's largest twinjet and has a typical seating capacity for 314 to 451 passengers, with a range of 5,235 to 9,500 nautical miles (9,695 to 17,594 km). Commonly referred to as the "Triple Seven", its distinguishing features include the largest-diameter turbofan engines of any aircraft, six wheels on each main landing gear, fully circular fuselage cross-section and a blade-shaped tail cone. Developed in consultation with eight major airlines, the 777 was designed to replace older wide-body airliners and bridge the capacity difference between Boeing's 767 and 747. As Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, it has computer-mediated controls. It is also the first commercial aircraft to be designed entirely with computer-aided design. The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 is a three-engine medium- to long-range wide-body jet airliner, manufactured by McDonnell Douglas and, later, by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Based on the DC-10, it features a stretched fuselage, increased wingspan with winglets, refined airfoils on the wing and smaller tailplane, new engines and increased use of composite materials. Two of its engines are mounted on underwing pylons and a third engine at the base of the vertical stabilizer. It also features a glass cockpit that decreases the flight deck crew from the three required on the DC-10 to two by eliminating the need for a flight engineer.

Thank you for 160.000 Subscribers! 100 Minutes of airplane which were made in the usa. I was going through my entire collection of aviation footage and picked out the most interesting footage of all Boeing, Lockheed, Douglas, McDonnelDouglas airplanes I could find. As you probably know the Douglas Dc-8, L1011 and Il-76TD are my favorite planes but sadly I wasn` t able to film a moving Dc-8 yet. Still hoping for the Samaritans Purse Dc-8-72 someday. I am planing to do the same for "Made in Europe" and "Made in Russia and Ukraine". Classic planes are my favorites and that` s why I tried to catch as many B707` s, Boeing 727`s, Dc-10` s and Tristars as possible and that` s why I am able to show you a few of these nostalgic airliners in this video. Hello and welcome to SOUTHEND AVIATION! Taking a short flight to Paglesham in the MD500E from London Southend Airport! The McDonnel Douglas MD500E (Also referred to as the Hughes 369E) is a 4 seat civilian helicopter based off the Hughes OH-6. The helicopter may be familiar to some as the "Little Bird" a nickname given for the attack helicopter in video games. Multiple variants of the MD500 have been produced both for the civil and military market. This ride was taken in a 1991 MD500E (369E) which has been based at London Southend for roughly a year along with G-HUKA. The 500E was the first model to have the re designed nose which is now featured on the 520N, 530F(FF) and the larger 600N, as well as later military variants. The MD500 series all use the Rolls-Royce Allison 250 turboshaft engine, one of the most successful power plants in the helicopter world. N369E is fitted with a Model 250-C20B, rated at 420 shaft horsepower (310kW). As for the flight, we started up on taxiway Charlie before departing RWY 23 via Bravo. The we banked right heading towards Paglesham, a quick 5 minute in total. Hope you enjoy!
