With writer-director Scott Frank’s fantastic limited series, The Queen’s Gambit, now streaming on Netflix, I recently got to speak with Marielle Heller about returning to acting after spending the last few years directing A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Can You Ever Forgive Me. If you haven’t seen the trailers, The Queen’s Gambit is based on the novel by Watler Tevis and follows Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy), who was abandoned to a Kentucky orphanage in the late 1950s. While there, she discovers an extraordinary talent for the game of chess, but also becomes addicted to the tranquilizers provided by the state as a sedative for the children. After getting adopted by Alma Wheatley (Marielle Heller), Beth attempts to battle both the struggles of her chemical dependency as well as the misogyny of the male-dominated world of competitive chess. Loaded with great acting, incredible production design, and beautiful cinematography, I loved this series and absolutely recommend checking it out. The Queen’s Gambit also stars Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Moses Ingram, Harry Melling and Bill Camp. During the interview, Marielle Heller talked about what was it like acting after a ten-year hiatus, not having to worry about anything other than acting, how the series doesn’t have the typical villain, what it was like filming in Berlin, the incredible production design, why she loves Christopher Guest’s Waiting for Guffman, the status of her next directing project, Five Women, and a lot more. Marielle Heller: How did her work as a documentary crew member in Popstar and Clocky in MacGruber help prepare her for the role in The Queen’s Gambit? What TV series would she like to guest write and direct? What movie has she seen the most? What was it like acting after a ten-year hiatus and not having to worry about anything other than acting? How the story doesn’t have the typical villain. What she loved about her character. What it was like filming in Berlin, the incredible production design and cinematography. The status of her next directing project Five Women. For interviews, movie reviews, and more visit 🤍 FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL 🤍 🤍 🤍

"Can You Say ... Hero?" is an article written by Esquire writer Tom Junod in 1998. When he wrote that profile of beloved children's television host Mr Rogers, he never thought the story would be adapted to be a feature film two decades later. As director Marielle Heller's third feature film, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is about Junod's encounters with Mister Fred Rogers. Matthew Rhys's Lloyd Vogel, a fictionalized version of Tom Junod, reluctantly goes to Pittsburgh to interview Rogers, played by Tom Hanks, for a special issue devoted to heroes. After Rogers dodges his questions, Vogel realizes that the real story here is about the way Mr. Rogers changes the life of a cynical writer as he welcomes a new baby to his life. Director Marielle Heller and Tom Hanks told HFPA journalist Scott Orlin that the challenge of this film was how to capture the essence of Mister Rogers. Marielle Heller, director of a biopic of childrens' TV entertainer Fred Rogers, talks about making the film. It’s hard to overstate the impact Fred Rogers had on American culture. For three decades, he enchanted generations of children with his television show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Gently paced, the show was a safe haven, where Rogers entertained but also tackled problems that his young viewers might have to face as they grew up; his motto was, ‘If you can mention it, you can manage it’. An excellent Matthew Rhys, playing magazine writer Lloyd Vogel (based on journalist Tom Junod) is commissioned to write an article on the presenter. He regards Rogers as an monolith of an unfashionable past – a relic whose style and ideas are outdated. He is also deeply suspicious: ‘Could anyone really be so good, so kind?’ But on spending more time with Rogers, Vogel begins to question his own misanthropic outlook. As a Hollywood star admired for his integrity (he’s Toy Story’s Woody, after all) Tom Hanks is perfect as Rogers. A clever script from Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster (series writers on Transparent) and ingenious direction from Heller also ensure that you don’t need to know who Rogers was for this film to work its magic. With her third feature, after the superb The Diary of a Teenage Girl and Can You Ever Forgive Me? (LFF 2018), Marielle Heller has delivered her best yet. Director Marielle Heller discusses her 2019 film "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" in a post-screening Q&A in MoMA's Contenders series. “Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) is assigned to write a profile of Rogers, whom he long ago dismissed as a sappy irrelevance. From their first encounter, he’s forced to look closer. He’s surprised to see Mr. Rogers on the set of his show, gently showing his young viewers how to deal with real-life challenges, conflict, and pain. ‘There’s no normal life that is free from pain,’ Rogers says simply. And as Rogers observes Lloyd, he sees the pain inside this hardened, grown man who has shut himself off from a lifetime of unresolved conflicts with his father (Chris Cooper) and wife (Susan Kelechi Watson). As Lloyd shadows Rogers, the shallow profile he was planning turns out to be a momentous and meaningful encounter for both men. Drawing on Tom Junod’s Esquire article about his experience with Rogers, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood offers both real catharsis and the pleasure of a signature Tom Hanks performance. Technically perfect and imbued with the almost spiritual good that marks all his work, his Fred Rogers finds adult truths in the deep wisdom of childhood” (2019 Toronto International Film Festival program notes). A gifted film performer and screenwriter Marielle Heller was welcomed in 1979. It would be interesting to know that her path in show business began with stage acting and only in 2015 she made a breakthrough in the moviemaking world by writing and directing a movie called The Diary of a Teenage Girl. This project was followed by two more successful works: A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Can You Ever Forgive Me? Throughout Marielle’s career, she starred in a number of great television projects, including Walk Among the Tombstones, The Queen’s Gambit, Spin City and many others. Today, the celebrity keeps dealing with acting, producing and screenwriting. But what about Heller’s family ties? Who are her closest people? Let’s find it out right now! The father Steve is a real estate agent. In addition to that, he is an owner of Alameda Chiropractic. In a marriage with his wife Annie, he parented three children and is very close with all of them. He has always been very supportive of his stellar daughter’s career and even took her to her first auditions. The mother Annie is an art teacher and an artist. Despite the fact that she is a mother of a worldwide known film star, Annie doesn’t like being in the limelight. However, in 2015 she attended the Sundance Institute Celebration benefit with Marielle and Steve. The actress has two younger siblings. A brother Nate is a middle child in a family, who used to be a part of Wendy Darling music band. Yet, he rose to prominence thanks to his composing skills- he wrote music for Circus Kid documentary, Sophie Jones film, Noodles short film and his sister’s three films. Emily is the youngest sibling, who was delivered in 1985. She is recognized for writing and producing the Barry TV show as well as dealing with stand-up comedy. She is also known for working on People on Earth, Medical Police, Surviving Jack, etc. As for Heller’s relationship status, she has been happily married to the love of her life, Jorma Taccone since 2007 and up till the present moment. He is most famed for being a part of a sketch comedy troupe The Lonely Island. In addition to that he had been working for Saturday Night Live since 2005 till 2014. Also, he demonstrated his acting skills in Kung Fury, Hot Rod, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Parks and Recreation and many other television projects. The two lovebirds got to know each other while studying at UCLA. In June 2007 they tied the knot and are now raising a child. The couple’s son Wylie drew his first breath in December 2014. Very little information is available about his life, as his privacy is strictly guarded by his parents. Nonetheless, he could be seen on the set of A Beautiful Day, helping his mother say “cut” and “action”. A curious fact: he isn’t allowed to watch a lot of TV and watched the first TV program Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood at the age of 2. Do you want to see more? Subscribe!
