CAPE SECRETS Gansbaai is a popular fishing town located in the western cape. It’s about 2 hours from Cape town and is perhaps best known as the Great White Shark Capital of the world, but there is so much more to this small town. Gansbaai falls under the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, home to thousands of seabirds, including the iconic African penguins, Whales who migrate here from Antarctica, Orcas (though not very often), Dolphins and roughly 60,000 seals. We had the pleasure of touring the area with a company called Marine Dynamics who founded the conservation trust. They run a highly successful and educational shark diving tour, if you’ve seen Great Whites on TV, they have most likely been filmed here, it honestly changed my preconception of great whites. The founder of Marine Dynamics is Wilfred Chivell. Marine Dynamics actually founded the African penguin and seabird sanctuary whom they work closely with. This might not be a known fact but the African penguins are endangered and scientist believe they may be extinct by 2013 (which breaks my heart). These beautiful little birds face a variety of challenges such as oil spills, fishing line entanglement, seal bites & shark bites. Aside exploring this incredible eco-system, we had a chance to explore the Gansbaai caves and the HMS Birkenhead memorial site. Apparently, the legendary Birkenhead treasure is still waiting to be found… The Gansbaai area is also known for its rich Fynbos (part of the Cape Floral Kingdom). Gansbaai really surprised me, I couldn’t recommend it more for those looking for a fun weekend away. Gansbaai (directly translated means Goose Bay) is a small fishing town about 160km east (2 hours drive) from Cape Town. It is known for shark cage diving because of its dense population of great white sharks. But it offers much more as an adventure holiday destination for fishing, running, cycling, rowing, swimming and walking on long stretches of safe beaches. Footage from my first summer with white sharks, 2004, culminates with a snorkel through shark alley, the channel that lies between Geyser Rock and Dyer Island off the coast of Gansbaai / Kleinbaai, South Africa. It was a good first season. There were less rules. Less tourists. Less hype. I was fortunate enough to see many white sharks, a couple of nose-ups, and a grey whale swim past the cage on a day the camera wasn't working. Too bad this was before HD existed. #sharkalley #swimmingwithsharks #sharkdiving #greatwhites #southafrica For all the "brave" commenters I'll leave one blanket response: 1. This wasn't meant to be suicide, and thus I wasn't allowed to swim in the middle of the channel. 2. Thank God I wasn't allowed. I was young and stupid and wouldn't do it today. 3. It's a sharp and deep drop right next to the rocks. I personally felt plenty vulnerable, which leads to the next point. 4. Yes, white sharks do hunt next to the rocks. Andrew Fox has and others have shared first hand accounts of seeing sharks pursue seals to the point they get caught briefly on the rocks. 5. This was actually quite stupid in retrospect. 6. Denvor ontmoet vir Penny Sikade wat tradisionele drag uitrustings maak en verkoop waarmee sy ook werk verskaf. Daarna ontmoet hulle weer vir Anton by Rosemary's vir koffie. Hierna gaan laai Valient vir Denvor by die Great White House op Kleinbaai af waar hy met Nico Stelluto gesels oor die haaiduik-industrie. Hulle vaar uit op Slashfin waar hulle 'n hele klompie haaie van naderby sien en hy met internasionale besoekers gesels. Valient besoek die Dangerpoint Vuurtoring en gesels oor die geskiedenis van die Birkenhead.
In Deel 2 besoek Valient die visfabriek en gesels met Ferdinand Tobias terwyl Denvor Ichtus Visserye besoek waar Nico Groenwald hom die kreef- en perlemoentenks wys. Daarna besoek hulle visverkoper, Magrita Adams en haar visserman-broer Freek.
On the 16th of March 2011 a fire started in the early afternoon on the Gansbaai Mountains. This Video has been recorded through the whole day until late night. The Firemen and the Helicopter were in action for many hours and they fortunately managed to extinguish the fire. No individuals or houses were harmed.

African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary The African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary (APSS) is a Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT) project based in Gansbaai. A state of the art facility, designed and built by passionate experts, that strives to provide local marine avian species with a local rehabilitative centre where injured, diseased or distressed birds can be treated and rehabilitated. Although the facility was purpose built for rehabilitation of marine birds, it also caters for creating awareness around the perils marine birds face out in the wild. Gansbaai Gansbaai is the best destination in the world for shark cage diving. It's also a town of boat cruises, beaches and hikes. A fishing village, Gansbaai may seem like any other small South African town, but driving to the shoreline reveals a fleet of boats lined up at the harbour. These operate daily, taking travellers out on epic shark cage diving experiences. Only a strong cage separates divers from the great white sharks that rule these waters. Visitors who are reluctant to undergo the full underwater experience can observe the sharks from the safety of the deck. Boat rides are also great for getting really close to southern right whales between July and November. Dolphins and seabirds also regular visitors.
