FSO Safer tanker in the Red Sea-World must act now to prevent catastrophic oil spill in the Red Sea. Moored off the Red Sea coast of Yemen, the FSO Safer is a rapidly decaying supertanker holding four times the amount of oil the Exxon Valdez spilled. It could break up or explode at any time, unleashing a humanitarian and ecological catastrophe centered on a country already decimated by more than seven years of war. Such a spill would result in lasting environmental damage and have profound economic costs across the region. A disruption in shipping through the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Suez Canal would result in billions of dollars in trade losses every day. The UN’s two-track plan to prevent the catastrophe requires $144 million, including $80 million for the emergency operation to transfer the oil to a safe vessel. The emergency operation is already delayed by a $20 million funding gap. An investment of tens of millions of dollars now will save tens of billions of dollars in the future. The European Union (EU) will support the UN-coordinated plan to address the environmental threat posed by FSO Safer tanker in the Red Sea. The combined pledge from European Union Member States and the European Union (€3 million) amount to €23.6 million more than 70% of the total funds pledged. * Thank you very much for watching this informative video!

AL JAZIRAH, YEMEN — Yemen’s civil war has generated the perfect conditions for a massive oil spill to happen. Here are the details: The Guardian reports that an abandoned and rusting oil tanker with 1.1 million barrels of oil on board is like a ticking time bomb that can easily break up and cover the Yemen coastline under tons of crude oil. The FSO Safer is a single-hulled tanker that carries four times more oil than was spilled during the massive Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989. The ship was abandoned in 2017 and keeps on deteriorating while Yemen’s Houthi rebels fight a civil war against a Saudi-led coalition on the land next to it. In May 2020, water entered the ship’s engine room through a leaking pipe, and the vessel's fire extinguishing system is now non-operational, according to a study published in the journal Nature Sustainability. Researchers say a hull breach would cover important coral reefs in oil, while also closing desalination plants and cutting 9 million people off from clean water. The likely oil spill would also destroy a big part of Yemen’s fish sources at a time when the country is starting to suffer from a famine. The rebels, who control the area where the ship is located, have previously blocked UN inspectors from assessing the vessel. However, the Houthis have repeatedly blamed the Saudi-led coalition that is fighting them for preventing UN inspectors access to the tanker. SOURCES: The Guardian, CNN, UN.org 🤍 🤍 🤍

The FSO SAFER is one of the world’s largest tankers. It has 1,148 million barrels of crude oil onboard. 8 km off the Yemeni coast, the FSO Safer has been moored for 6 years, without maintenance. SAFER’s iron hull was subjected to corrosion and decomposition, operating systems have been disrupted, the fire extinguishing equipment no longer functions In 2016, Safer’s steam boilers stopped producing inert gas necessary to prevent explosions has broken down. On May 27, 2020, seawater seeped into the engine compartment. The imminent disaster would badly affect 300 species of coral reefs that covers about 25% of the Yemeni coast. This might cause a major new crisis within the Yemeni humanitarian crisis The time is ticking. The catastrophe must be avoided before it is too late.

Damage to the Safer FSO would negatively affect an already devastating economic and humanitarian situation In Yemen. It would also cause serious damage to the marine environment (and economy) in the broader region, stretching from Yemen to the Saudi Farasan islands, the Eritrean Dahlak islands, and the Djibouti coast.

Potential Health Impacts of the FSO Safer Catastrophe | Holm Akhdar

Over the past months of the year 2020, the two districts of Al-Rawda and Habban, in Shabwah governorate amid the southern part of Yemen, have been subject to serious oil pollution due to frequent damage of the crude oil supply pipeline. This oil pipeline connects the production fields, in the area of West Ayad, to the export tanks in Nashima. Last week, the camera of Holm Akhdar visited the oil-affected areas in Tamoura and Ghurair Valleys of Al-Rawda District in Shabwah, where the environmental disaster threatens the future of the local population. On the other bank, north the western coast of the Red Sea, Yemen is apparently subject to a greater threat posed by FSO SAFER oil tanker, which was abandoned right off Ras Isa coast in the governorate of Al-Hodeidah, 6 years ago, with 1,148 million barrels of crude oil on board, which could cause a very severe Health & Environmental disaster. In November 2016, Safer’s steam boilers stopped producing inert gas for protection, and the risk of substances evaporating from crude oil has increased to a very high level, according to the Risk and Health Impact Analysis prepared by Riskware experts, this might increase the possibility of an explosion taking place due to ignition of gases amassed in the storage tanks. This oil combustion could cause high levels of air pollution. #FSOSafer #SalvageTheSAFER Staff: Supervising: Mohammed Al-Hakimi Producer: Ahmed Baider Voiceover: Zamzam Qassem Cameramen: Ammar Namish and Muhammad Khaled Translation: Radfan Mohamed Video Editor: Kamal Al-Hitari IT Officer: Zakaria Al-Najar Assistant team: Hussein Al-Yabari & Samah Al-Jarani Copyrights © 2021 All Rights Reserved for Holm Akhdar Foundation ـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ Follow us on social media: Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍 SoundCloud: 🤍 LinkedIn: 🤍 For more visit our website: 🤍

Greenpeace warned Thursday that a long-abandoned fuel tanker off war-torn Yemen’s coast could “explode at any moment,” urging UN action to prevent a catastrophic Red Sea oil spill. The 45-year-old fuel vessel FSO Safer has 1.1 million barrels of crude onboard, and has been abandoned near Yemen’s western port of Hodeida since 2015. “The FSO Safer is rusting at anchor and could break or explode at any moment,” said Greenpeace spokesman Ahmed El Droubi. “It’s not if, it’s when,” Droubi added. The UN Security Council are to meet later Thursday after Houthi militia who control much of Yemen’s north said an agreement to allow a UN mission to inspect the tanker had “reached a dead end.” Effectively a floating storage platform, it has had virtually no maintenance for six years, and now environmentalists warn it could break apart. Greenpeace said that as well as corrosion to the rusting ship, essential work to manage explosive gases in its storage tanks has been neglected.Jennifer Morgan, executive director of Greenpeace International, said the UN “must act now to avoid what could be the region’s biggest oil disaster” for decades. “The solutions are available, the expertise and technologies to help are known,” Morgan added. The UN has said an oil spill would destroy Red Sea ecosystems, shut down the fishing industry and close Yemen’s lifeline Hodeida port for six months. The Houthis are calling for immediate inspection and maintenance of the tanker, but the UN said there must be an impartial assessment before maintenance work can safely commence.
