►Like any car built after the mid-nineties, the BMW E46 M3 uses a plastic headlight lens. While lightweight and inexpensive, the plastic is known to yellow, crack, and haze up over time, reducing the amount of light passing through. Replacing the BMW E46 M3 headlight lens is a simple process guaranteed to restore the look and safety of your headlights. While you're in there, you can also replace the bulb and seal. The seal sits above the light and blocks weather and debris from entering the engine bay. Like the leans, the rubber seal will deteriorate with age and allow foreign objects to pass by. The E46 BMW came in two gearbox flavours - manual and SMG (sequential manual gearbox). Most purists would choose the manual - without first having a go in the SMG. I think that is a mistake. The revered M3 CSL is pretty darn LOVED by any self respecting petrolhead - and BMW themselves decided it will be available as SMG only. Some people bemoan that fact, wishing it was available as a manual - but - purists would not want to see the CSL converted as it then loses its OEM status (stay with me here).. SO, if you want a good CSL, at time of writing, they are around £60+k. By weird logic, the normal E46 SMG M3’s can be picked up at a cheaper price than the manual (if a great manual was £20k the SMG equivalent would be £18k). BUT - having experienced both, turns out I actually LOVE driving the SMG. Why?... well it definitely ain’t no DSG - it is FAR more engaging. You have to learn how to drive the SMG and once you do, it makes you really feel part the car - and that engagement is proper fun, as well as totally addictive! Another bonus, no-one (well, hardly anyone) hoons around 100% of the time - so the auto mode of the SMG may not be quite like an actual auto - but, driven right, it is perfectly capable of giving an easy, smooth, relaxing ride. And one more thing - the purists would have a coupe, manual with no sunroof - which means the convertible with SMG - which is a beautiful, glorious machine, is the best value one to buy - and all good example of any flavour will hold it's value, or more likely increase. Who’s faster down the strip? Driver Battles: Track Edition is back for another episode at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. This episode pits Geoff Tumang and his 2002 BMW M3 against Kyle Deneau and his 2003 Porsche 911. In this battle of classic German performance vehicles, the Porsche has the edge in both power and weight. However, Geoff has far more experience behind the wheel, which can often make up the difference. This has all the makings of a classic battle. While Geoff’s E46 M3 may have less power than the Porsche, that doesn’t mean it’s a slouch. It puts out 333hp, which seems pretty appropriate for an M3, and is more than enough to run fast laps at Chuckwalla. The biggest and most obvious modification is the big RS Future wing out back. His wing is bigger than the Porsche’s, so aero may be where he has the opportunity to take this battle. Along with a host of other modifications, like TE37 wheels and a 6-speed SMG, Geoff is running Nitto NT01 tires so that he can run fast laps throughout the day and improve on his times. Kyle’s Porsche 996 may be in a lot of ways similar to how it was stock, but there have been some small but important upgrades made to it. First off, the engine has been bored to 4.0 liters, giving it 380hp. He also gutted the interior and added a cage, which has taken the weight down to 2500 lbs. This power and speed combination could prove decisive. He also added a wing in the back, so while he won’t have as much aero as Geoff, he’ll still have quite a bit. To keep the battle fair, Kyle is also running NT01s, so expect fast laps from him as well. Both contestants are returning competitors, with Geoff having lost his first battle and Kyle taking the victory when he came out. Will Geoff get redemption on this scorching hot day at Chuckwalla, or will Kyle continue his winning streak? You’ll have to watch to find out. We have positive news on the poorly assembled pre Crossflow engine, all forged build to come. We have an M3 engine back that we built it’s blown up and we have fingers pointed at us, but what we find surprises us, this thing didn’t last long because of this
It's finally time to put the converted SMG transmission back together with the machined bellhousing. We also do some maintenance on the BMW E46 M3: rear main seal, constant pressure valve (CPV) o-ring, pilot bearing, new clutch and pressure plate, and reseal the transmission. Some of the other supporting mods for the smg conversion included installing the clutch pedal, shifter assembly, input shaft seal, shift rod seal, output shaft seal, drilling a hole for the shifter, and installing the shifter arm bushing carrier. This video was filmed as a VLOG, but there will be a separate video that goes into the specifics of what all the E46 M3 SMG to 6 Speed Manual Conversion entails.
