Ayra Starr - Rush - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 As if manifested by her twinkling surname, Ayra Starr seems destined for the spotlight. Growing up between Lagos and Cotonou, Benin (which are separated by country borders but only 125kms apart), young Ayra feasted on a musical diet of Rihanna, Shakira, gospel, and the first wave of Afrobeats. “I come from a very musical household. My uncle was very musical, my grandad played guitar, my mum used to do reggae when she was younger,” recalls the now 20-year-old, whose creative team mirrors another Artist To Watch alum: Billie Eilish. Like the “bad guy” singer, Starr’s brother is her writing and production partner, and her mother is her biggest champion. Both young women also share a penchant for being unfiltered. “Fk society/Fk you wannabes/Fk your hypocrisy,” Starr jabs on “Ase,” from her debut album ‘19 & Dangerous.’ It was released last August on Mavin Records, which has been home to Rema and Tiwa Savage. As the story goes, in 2019 Mavin head honcho Don Jazzy was in her DM’s an hour after she posted a song tribute to her late father. Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and NME have also fallen for her intoxicating blend of Afrosoul, R&B and West African pop. High fives were likely passed around when the Nigerian songbird’s fem-empowered “Rush” surpassed 20 million views less than a month after its release this fall; she directed it. That incisive voice of hers was right upfront during her ATW performance of the track, which is yet another addition to her bulging trophy case. What else is there to say: Ayra’s a star. Oxlade - Away - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 Whether it was the glossy guitars, tropical chorus harmonies, or Oxlade’s insistent vocal delivery, “Away” caught lots of ears when it arrived a few year’s back. One pair belonged to Drake, who went so far as to show love to the Afrobeat confection on Insta. Months later, Rolling Stone named it a top 50 song of 2020; to date, “Away” has more than 13 million streams. Vibe with Oxlade for a bit and you’ll quickly notice the Nigerian upstart’s mastery of minimalism and repetition. 2022’s “I Want You” finds the singer repeating the title phrase like a hypnotist. Born and raised in Lagos, Ikuforiji Abdulrahman Olaitan’s music career truly began while studying history at the city’s university. Having been a choir kid, he kept his passion for music alive during school by dropping a couple tracks on Soundcloud. “Shugar” in particular caught a small viral wave, and the response was strong enough for a further push: Olaitan vanished, Oxlade appeared in his place. Lately, Oxlade has honed his craft with singles and collabs. This summer another “moment” arrived. With a smile plastered on his face, the 25-year-old cruised through a COLORS performance of “KU LO SA.” Was he grinning because he knew that in the near future the clip would earn more than 40 million views? Maybe. After all, confidence checks in as Oxlade’s biggest strength. In these Artist To Watch performances of “Away” and “More” - not only does the guy clearly love what he’s doing, he’s also spreading good vibes as he does it. “I don’t call Afrobeats a genre. I call it a way of life. It’s a movement. It’s an umbrella that covers every African artist,” he says. As African pop music continues to explode around the world, Oxlade’s perspective should have fans feeling good with him holding it down at the forefront. FLO - Immature (Live). An exclusive performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music. It’s time to bring back the girl groups, ya’ll. Especially the UK ones. Certainly the spirit of Spice Girls and Sugababes was alive in Renée Downer, Jorja Douglas, and Stella Quaresma when they formed FLO. Considering the impact of the trio’s “Cardboard Box," it seems fans were ready for the girl group sound, too. One of the FLO's strengths is their chemistry, which comes from familiarity. Renée and Stella are childhood friends, and Jorja says she keyed into their vibe immediately. “I knew from the moment [we met] we were about to start something big.” The R&B trio took two years honing their craft before dropping any tracks. That timespan included finding the right producers, such as MNEK, who has credits with Dua Lipa and Beyoncé, and produced “Cardboard Box.” Thanks to deep catchiness and fantastic choreography, snippets of their debut video seem to go viral every other week on Twitter and TikTok - no wonder it has more than three million views on YouTube. Considering this is still FLO's early stages, these DSCVR versions of “Cardboard Box” and “Immature” are sure to get gobbled up by fans. Get back on the girl group bandwagon while there’s room. Nina Chuba - Wildberry Lillet (Live). An exclusive performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music. Nina Chuba is in the right place in Berlin, a city with a club scene that rewards artists crafting party-ready bangers. As if in competition with herself, every recent release from hip-pop singer-songwriter ratchets up the nightlife energy more than the last. “Molly Moon” blasted gurgling 808s and a fusion of German and English. “Tracksuit Velours” is an ode to the perfect outfit for those partying longer than 24 hours at once. “Femminello” and "Wildberry Lillet" are further proof of Chuba's mood-capturing abilities. She wrote the former during a stay at a Sicilian songwriting camp where she indulged in “good weather, good people, good food, good songs.” No need to sprechen Deutsch to feel those pleasures coming from these DSCVR performances - the citrus yellow and bluish berry hues of the studio lighting along with Chuba’s sparkling grin will instantly transport you to a sunny state of mind. FLO - Not My Job - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 “I knew from the moment [we met] we were about to start something big.” That’s Jorja Douglas recalling her first connection with fellow FLO mates Stella Quaresma and Renée Downer. Seems like Jorja’s intuition was correct. Released last spring, FLO’s debut track “Cardboard Box'' immediately went crazy viral, and threw the 20-year-olds into the middle of the conversation about the current wave of nostalgic-leaning R&B. Comparisons to fellow UK girl groups Spice Girls and Sugababes arrived quickly. Debut EP ‘The Edge’ reinforces the trio’s commitment to the bedazzled fun of throwback pop-R&B. Check how the languid chimes that set the vibe for Ashanti and Usher at the turn of the millennium mark the punchy verses and harmonized choruses of FLO’s “Feature Me.” Indeed, one could easily be convinced that Missy Elliot and Darkchild lent the drum machine they used on Destiny Child’s ‘The Writing’s on the Wall’ to the trio’s producers for “Summertime.” As effortless as they make it seem, Stella, Renée and Jorja spent two years honing their craft before dropping any tracks. That timespan included finding the right teammates, such as “Cardboard Box” producer MNEK, who also has credits with Dua Lipa and Beyoncé. “We had so much fun arranging and recording our Vevo session earlier this year,” they said about their summer visit to our DSCVR studio. Things have changed in the months between: we’ve made a gorgeous upgrade to our space, and FLO has more songs out and ready to perform, like the harmony-tastic "Not My Job." This girl group’s vision is strong, and just like Jorja, we have a really good feeling about it. GloRilla - No More Love - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 If GloRilla was an athlete, she’d be collecting her Rookie of the Year trophy. The rapper’s HitKidd-produced breakout banger “F.N.F. (Let’s Go)” dropped on April 29, clobbering the competition and causing double takes with its impact - the GloRillafication of hip-hop 2022 was swift and deep. Some fans were caught scratching their heads: surely this brash anti-guy anthem has been around longer than just one summer? Extending the athlete metaphor, the Memphis native’s primary strength is her hard-hitting flow. Almost every line from the GRAMMY nominated “F.N.F.” works as a punchy example, but “at the red light/twerkin' on them headlights'' paints a vivid picture. Glo’s got a voice that seems drenched in Southern Comfort, a laconic murmur that lives in low-register land and packs a wallop when it strikes. Accurate comparisons have been drawn to Cardi B; hot on the heels of “F.N.F.,” it wasn’t surprising when the duo’s “Tomorrow 2” collab debuted in the Billboard Top 10. Add in “Blessed” and combine them all and you’ll find Glo’s three major videos clocking in the 100-million-views territory. Makes sense that Yo Gotti jumped on signing the 23-year-old to his CMG imprint, the South’s hottest rap label of the moment. Labelmate Moneybagg Yo called her the perfect “puzzle piece.” Another young and influential Memphis figure who’s diminutive frame belies his explosive power is Memphis Grizzlies star hooper Ja Morant, who won NBA rookie of the year in 2020. The Griz’ arena is only a few miles from the Frayser neighborhood where GloRilla grew up. This year the team invited Glo, who was raised as Gloria Woods, to narrate their season hype video. At the end of it she summarizes how we all feel about her: “What’s understood, don’t gotta be explained. Gyakie - Far Away (Live). An exclusive performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music. In those innocent months that preceded March of 2020, Jackline Acheampong could be found studying at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. This daughter of an acclaimed highlife singer had decided that, although she loved music, the wisest career choice was to “be a businesswoman and get the bag.” As it so happened for billions around the globe, the next few months changed her short term plans. By summer, she was channeling her pent-up energy back into music, recording an EP under the moniker Gyakie (pronounced “Jackie”). One track in particular stood out: a sticky-sweet vibe called “Forever” that had the soothing and sensual hallmarks many contemporary Afropop hits. “I’m very particular about being a Ghanaian artist,” says the 22-year-old, who has emphasized that she aims to reveal her range across not only Afrobeats, but also R&B, pop, rock, reggae and jazz. So don’t be surprised by the crunchy guitars on “Waka Waka,” or the mid-2000s R&B feel of “Far Away.” After all, Gyakie is a student at heart, and the key to growth - whether in running a business or making music - is curiosity. Things have changed in the months between: we’ve made a gorgeous upgrade to our space, and FLO has more songs out and ready to perform, like the harmony-tastic "Not My Job” and empowering “Feature Me.” This girl group’s vision is strong, and just like Jorja, we have a really good feeling about it. Pop Smoke - Dior - an exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2020, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music. Pop Smoke chose to go it alone on his debut mixtape, 'Meet The Woo,' and with zero features, fans got a deep dose of the buzzed-about rapper. "[I'm] the hardest in New York," he once told an interviewer while explaining the choice to eschew features, "you want other people in my shit?" The Brooklyn MC has one of the most ominous rasps around, and when he rhymes - often about street action that includes lots of vivid violence and milks the darker tones of drill - there's usually some kind of threat in the air. From "Welcome To the Party" to "Better Have Your Gun," this fan of 50 Cent, JAY-Z and Meek Mill, a Canarsie dude with Panamanian family roots, is reviving the kind of NYC rap that flaunts its dangerous side. It’s a mix of "aggression and fashion" he has said, the second qualifier perhaps a reference to his other hit, "Dior." When the New York Times wrote about him in early September, the opening scene took place in a high-end clothing store. It's an enticing mix for sure, and the two performances he delivered for our Artists To Watch series, illustrate Pop Smoke's moody charisma. Put on the headphones and crank it up. Summer Walker – “Karma” Live Performance | Vevo Summer Walker needs love. She sings all about it in her aptly titled, “Girls Need Love.” But while her song lyrics sizzle with sex appeal, the Atlanta newcomer’s artistry is also in need of affection. Her 2018 debut, ‘Last Days of Summer,’ brims with old school heartache and millennial panache. That combination, combined with Walker’s swagger and forthright personality, just might help her capture 2019’s It Girl crown. Recently, Vevo connected with her for cool performances of “Girls Need Love” and “Karma” from the ‘Last Days’ album. The former got a boost this year by way of a Drake verse for the remix. Add that material to her new EP, ‘Clear,’ and your cold winter nights will feel a bit warmer. Nonso Amadi - Ease Up - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 “Travel turns you into a storyteller” goes the old adage, and these wise words epitomize the artistry of Nonso Amadi. As a college student, the Nigerian-born singer/songwriter/producer’s first adventure was a move from his home country to the UK. As music nudged its way to the forefront of his life, this restless Mary J. Blige and Paul Play fan ultimately settled in Canada, where Toronto’s influential R&B scene provided fertile ground for deeper artistic growth. Ultimately, Nonso’s globetrotting helped nurture his core goal: to fuse Western groove music with trad African sounds, rhythms, and vibes. “I want to make great songs that tell my story,” says the “Tonight” singer. That irresistible 2016 track got passed around in Afro-R&B circles, its gauzy synths, delicate dembow riddim, and celestial vocals crafting a template for Nonso’s future output. As the decade ended, Afropop and Alté had reached a groundswell in Nigeria. Nonso’s name was in lots of mouths back home. His ‘Free’ EP fueled the fire. Tracks such as “No Crime” and “What Makes You Sure?” emphasized lyrical honesty and softly-woven textures. Afrobeats titan Mr. Eazi hopped on “Go Outside” further cementing Nonso’s cred. By 2020, he had racked up more than 100 million streams across music platforms. Wisely, he has guided his ascent on the other side of the Atlantic with tranquility and deliberateness. “I’ve always wanted to be a bridge connecting African music and to the rest of the world,” he said about the importance of being part of our Artists to Watch 2023 class. Ptazeta - Mala Mala - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 It’s no secret that reggaeton is guilty of falling into some heteronormative tropes. Ptazeta aims to shatter that mold. Crashing the party in 2019, her “Mami” debut was an elegant urbano track that flipped the genre’s typical sultriness into a lesbian love letter. Sung by a woman, the lyrics “Mami y yo pa ti/Estoy haciendo cash pa volar de aquí'' subvert the ol’ sugar papi vibe. Turns out audiences were thirsty for such representation; “Mami '' went platinum, and the Canary Islands had a budding star in one of its own. Ptazeta’s music has an atomic energy, yanking listeners into her world. Sometimes, the sandy beaches of her home are the destination, like on “Déjate Ser'' and “Cae la noche.” (Thank her inventive production partner Juacko for those tropical trips.) Other times, and these moments are most impressive, Ptazeta becomes a rhyme master. She showed off her rapping skills early on with “Be Yourself” and “Lo Que Vivo.” But it was last year’s fiery session at the famed Bizarrap studio that really woke the dragon. After exhaling a cloud of blunt smoke, she spits 150 seconds of inferno with a sly sparkle in her eye. The video quickly went viral, racked up more than 90 million views to date, melted plenty of faces, and had surely had people asking “Who is this girl with the snake face-tat and how did she get so much swag?” The answer lies in her identity as an LGBTQIA+ artist. In interviews, she stresses that she’s alway believed in being her true self. “I understand that a lot of people have a hard time finding themselves, but for me, it’s natural to sing to people of my same-sex,” she wisely states. “That’s just who I am, if not I would be lying.” Along with her skills, that attitude earned her an Artist to Watch invite. With the studio properly fireproofed, she burned through “Mala Mala '' and “MFD,” which has a particularly cool intro. Ptazeta really knows how to make it personal. Ice Spice - Munch (Feelin’ U) - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 Talk about coming on strong. One day we were living our lives without Ice Spice, and the next she was everywhere. And now we need her…bad. The Bronx rapper has brought fun and flash to the NYC drill game. For a 22-year-old who dropped her first rhymes just a year a half ago, she sure throws that swag around. But that’s the way it has to be: authority is central to a drill attitude. Maybe Ice developed it coming through a rough Catholic school run, where the kids “come out sneaky,” or maybe it's her formative hood vibe, a place she calls “dirty.” Could be the dap she gets from heroes like Drake, who fell for her tracks, slipped into her DMs, and flew her to Toronto for some OVO fun. Whichever, her ascendance was quick, that’s for sure. In the spring of 2021, she and producer RiotUSA threw their “Bully” on TikTok and it stuck. Erica Banks’ Buss It challenge was a crucial door-opener, too. Then last fall Riot inverted Zedd’s “Clarity,” the rapper instantly saw a way to spit through it, and “No Clarity” let everyone know there was a new girl in town. Not bad for volleyball player and hair-style hobbyist who came up on Nicki but says that Sheff G’s “No Suburban” was her first drill inspiration (though she’s a Pop Smoke fan, too). Her first name is Isis, her Friendster handle was Spice. Her Black and Dominican parents support her efforts, including a yen to try her hand at a Latin vibe soon enough. When the sexy, serious and silly “Munch (Feelin’ U) defined the summer of 2022, we knew there was plenty of runway in front of her. “Making music makes me feel good,” she says. “As soon as I finish [a track], I play it all day. I love it.” That’s winner talk. Here comes Ice Spice. K-Trap - Interlude - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 “Watch what happens, watch what happens/Follow the flow, and watch the patterns.” Spend the weekend absorbing K-Trap's ‘The Last Whip II’ and you’ll have a good idea about how UK drill is reaching out around the world to gather new listeners in 2022. The 27-year-old mic fiend’s authority explodes from the speakers when he spits his way through tracks such as “Major Scrape” and “G-19.” The Gipsy Hill, London rapper has delivered a handful of mixtapes in the last few years, and with each he becomes more and more effective, his fierce approach taking on a cosmopolitan vibe. Call it forward motion. Progress has been part of the deal ever since he came on the radar with that ode that referenced the famous slight-of-hand master, David Blaine. Even back then, the heft of his output was obvious. That basso voice crackling through eerie samples. Ominous vibes housing vivid rhymes. For three years he hid his face behind a balaclava. Finally, he revealed it in the “Big Mood” video, from his ‘No Magic’ project. He’s been a harbinger of subtle moves that make drill reach more and more ears ever since, blending it with grime and straight-up rap, nodding to Afrobeats and bashment wrinkles. His latest project is ‘Joints,’ a collaboration with Blade Brown that has plenty of punch. “I like to explore and try different things,” he has said, “but it just so happened that everyone caught me in the drill bag and that’s what kind of blew up for me.” There was nothing but artistic fury flying around our studio when K-Trap hit for these Artist To Watch performances. Cannons - Bad Dream. An exclusive performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music. Cannons are vibemasters. From the release of 2017’s aptly-named ‘Night Drive’ EP to this year’s alluring ‘Fever Dream' debut, the LA trio has steadily expanded their electro-pop dreamworld. With her glittering outfits, shimmering blonde locks, and reverb-drenched whisper, frontwoman Michelle Joy uses siren skills to woo listeners. Her accomplices, longtime pals Ryan Clapham and Paul Davis, keep listeners in place with an array of spells - ethereal synths, crispy percussion, psychedelic guitars. Harry Styles was among the millions hypnotized by “Fire For You,” which went Gold earlier this year. Ostensibly their breakout track, it was actually part of 2019’s ‘Shadows’ EP. As its popularity grew through the lockdown era, Cannons’ impact did too; fans delved into the group’s deep discography of similarly vibey jams. Now the trio is getting a chance to conjure their magic on stage. Michelle loves seeing fans come out in “Cannons clothes” - anything that’s shiny, sparkly, feathery, or retro. Ethel Cain - A House In Nebraska - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 If you want emotional depth and sweeping grandeur from rock music, seek out Ethel Cain’s ‘Preacher’s Daughter.’ The singer-guitarist’s debut album crackles from the jump. “American Teenager” is a portrait of small towns where football, Jesus, and “putting too much faith in the make believe” are important, and the artsy outsiders are relegated to the bleachers. But Cain, who also goes by Hayden Silas Anhedönia, is the main character here. The scope of this ambitious songwriting further widens when the “Baba O’Riley”-tinged “American Teenager” transitions into “A House In Nebraska.” For nearly three minutes, only spine-tingling piano chords slice through the echo of her gritty voice. Sparse. Raw. Powerful. The Joanna Newsome disciple credits this moment as a euphoric breakthrough that lit the path to the entire project. Her ‘Inbred’ EP was famously assembled in a church basement. And although ‘Preacher’s Daughter’ was crafted more meticulously, a subversive religious zeal haunts “Nebraska” and several of its other tracks. Some outlets have uttered “pop” as a descriptor for Cain’s work, but don’t be surprised at the music’s moments of challenging dissonance, a la Sonic Youth. Recent media champions include Pitchfork, Paper Magazine, and the New York Times, whose profile charted the Tallahassee born singer’s complex relationship with her Southern Baptist heritage, as well as her affinity for small town life (these days she resides in Alabama, purchasing a pickup truck with her record-deal money). Hand-drawn tattoos dot her hairline as well as the rest of her body; earlier this year, Cain made public her trans identity. This artistry is a reminder not to judge a book by a cover. In fact, just skip the judgements entirely. The singer told us she’s excited for fans to hear her ATW 2023 performances “in a way they haven’t heard before on the record.” All that’s left to do is turn the speaker up and listen. ArrDee - Oliver Twist. An exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2022, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music. It’s not every rapper that kicks off a career by paraphrasing Charles Dickens, but ArrDee helps explain a longstanding hip-hop goal when he opens his debut hit “Oliver Twist” with “I just wanted some more.” The 19-year-old Brighton native threads his rhymes with humor. Not in a silly sense, but in a way that blends the excitement of spitting with the power of wit. He isn’t known for being a “cheeky chappy” for nothing - the kid with the massive mic tat on his forearm has told interviewers that he likes to “make people laugh and show lyrical ability as well.” In his first few tracks, including “Jiggy (Whiz)” and “6am In Brighton,” he fulfills on both while describing the particulars of being “a seaside boy who sat in his ding dong rapping.” Party nights with his boy squad on England’s southern coast, the confidence that comes with a quick turn of success - ArrDee’s subjects are always close to hand. “I'm a star player like Messi/I'm in the party with ten jezzies/Can't roll yard much, getting stressy/Having it large like Kevin and Perry.” Dude’s made pals quick, too. The remix of Russ Millions and Tion Wayne’s “Body” was his first important intro to a UK audience, and he collabs with Digga D on “Wasted.” Check that “Oliver Twist” video and you’ll find a cameo from social media influencer Adeola Patronne, who ArrDee shouted out in his “Body” verse. Cannons - Hurricane. We were certainly under their spell after their studio visit. When “Hurricane” and “Bad Dream” pull you into their world, you won’t want to leave. When Wesley Joseph moved from Birmingham to London back in 2016, his interests were varied. Dude grew up loving animation; from Pixar narratives to Gorillaz videos, his eyes were glued to the way movies could capture a feel… and the way that the accompanying music could enhance a viewer’s emotional experience. That’s one reason he connected with the OG Horse hip-hop collective, a group of art-centric creatives in his home town of Walsall, that included DSCVR alum Jorja Smith. Joseph’s uni move was to learn more about film, getting a grip on the craft so he could render the kind of enticing art he adored. But when this Young Thug fan hit London, he also began to take music more seriously, turning his bedroom into a studio, and applying his perfectionist personality to a growing cache of beats and tunes that blend hip-hop, soul, R&B, and what his admirers now call “future funk.” “Where I’m coming from we soulful, hopeful,” he sings on one of his earliest tracks, “Thrilla.” The process behind his “sound inspires imagery, imagery inspires words” mantra takes a minute, but growth has been constant. As “Imaginary Friends,” “Ghostin’,” and “Patience” made their way to fans’ playlists, it was obvious that quality wasn’t an element to be fretted over. Nina Chuba - Femminello (Live). Pajel - Ozean - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 Seems like everyone can feel it when a young talent rounds a corner and starts that upwards trajectory towards broader success. Pajel’s fans and contemporaries certainly had a sense of such uplift this past year. The promise of “Verkackt” and “Hausbesuch” just kind of crystallized, and the scope of his debut album ‘Seelenfrieden’ clearly presented itself. It didn’t take too long. It’s only been a year since “10von10” turned lots of heads on the German hip-hop scene by charting significantly in Austria, Switzerland, and his home country. The Neuss native with Ghanaian-Togolese roots also used the track to plant a flag on top of the Spotify and TikTok charts as well. One thing’s for sure: he’s been hanging with the right crowd. Features with Namika, Luciano and Olexesh help cement his cred, impressing what’s ostensibly the competition: Bausa, Luciano, and Headie One are collaborators and fans. His ‘Seelenfrieden’ EP reveals there’s room for vigorous force in his otherwise laid-back approach. He’s becoming known outside music, too; the rapper grabbed some major buzz when he hit social media with German national football players Thomas Müller and Serge Gnabry sporting what was said to be the club’s newly-designed uniform. But forget fashion. We chose Pajel to be a part of DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 because of his musical clout. Due early next year, his ‘2006’ debut album boasts tracks produced by Miksu/Macloud, Lucry & Suena, and pZy. Watch his performances of “Ozean” and “Sofa,” and you’ll know why we’re excited to see him make a sizable dent in 2023. piri & tommy - on & on - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 piri & tommy’s ‘froge.mp3’ has the kind of snap, crackle and pop that makes it one of the year’s most irresistible debut albums. Credit where it’s due: lead singles “on & on” and “soft spot” have already wooed a massive swath of fans during the last 12 months, with the latter track getting passed around TikTok in a big way. But the bulk of the UK duo’s disc, which arrived in October, is just as cool. From start to finish, ‘froge.mp3’ sets up a world of beats that toys with nostalgia while looking towards the future. The couple met in each other’s DMs when piri (Sophie McBurnie) flirted with tommy (Tommy Villiers), who was playing in the alt band Porij. These Manchester kids went on a date and found they not only dug Disclosure and Kaytranada, but dug each other, too. Cue the creativity: the music-making began with tommy building beats and piri turning them into rhythm-riddled songs - “Fleetwood Mac house,” as tommy once deemed it (on Spotify, the pair simply describe themselves as “Dance Music Duo”). More specific qualifiers might be “dreamy drum ‘n’ bass” or “bubblegum bangers.” Whichever, the duo’s earworm won over the queen of earworms when Charlie XCX found them entertaining enough to play “soft spot” on the BBC’s Radio 1. tommy, who Wet Leg fans will recognize as the “Ur Mum” video’s narcissistic protagonist, has said people latch onto the song “because it’s got such a hook-y chorus and lyrics that can stay in your head.” Other p&t tracks are just as catchy as their predecessors. “words,” “beachin’,” and “settle” are all instantly appreciated gems. The duo chose to share “on & on” with the ATW 2023 audience, and guess what? They brought the same energy to the performance as they did to this year’s Leeds Fest. Heads up, it’s dance time. Ashnikko - Daisy. An exclusive performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music. Watch out, Ashnikko is here. The trash-talking pixie known for her eff-off attitude has been killin’ it lately. Makes sense, too: Killing things is part of her persona. “Deal With It,” her anti-boy anthem with Kelis, racked up millions of views in just a few days. Its pirate-ship setting positions her as both Jack Sparrow’s emo daughter and the vid's menacing sea-monster. Speaking of menace, the North Carolina native’s bloody “STUPID” vid with Yung Baby Tate will pass 50 million views any day now. The suburb on which Ashnikko wreaks havoc in that one probably looks a bit like the sleepy Greensboro suburb in which she grew up. Anyone who needs primer on the 24-year-old, whose real name is Ashton Casey, should just think of her blue hair as a metaphor for her sound - totally wild and reliably ambitious. The tips of the hair spikes she sports in her DSCVR session are definitely sharp; so is her performance. Careful: if you watch “Deal With It” and “Daisy” enough times, you might start growing little devil horns. Lauren Spencer Smith - Fingers Crossed - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 Sometimes simpler is better. “My name is Lauren Spencer Smith, and I write songs about boys for your enjoyment.” That's how the Spotify page of the young Canadian singer behind “Fingers Crossed” describes her current job. It’s a true statement, but she’s left out a few elements. Like how well those songs are crafted, and how affecting her music can be. Tracks such as “Narcissist” and “Flowers” have raised goosebumps on the necks of numerous Smith fans - a growth demo for sure. “Young people fall for the wrong people, I guess my one was you,” she sings on the latter. Heartbreak is Smith's strong suit. The Vancouver Island teen, who made it to the Top 20 on ‘American Idol’ two years ago after wowing Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and (especially) Luke Bryan, has a gift when it comes to communicating emotional pain. That’s why “Fingers Crossed” took a wild ride on TikTok and hit the top of the iTunes chart the week after it was released. Listeners connect quickly to her work. Her 2019 Juno Award-nominated ‘Unplugged, Vol. 1’ proved that. Smith has said that a pal she met during her ‘Idol’ run helped tighten her writing skills. Now Smith’s process is architectural. She starts with a concept and moves into the specifics of the tale being told – what happened, how it felt, which instruments would communicate the story best. Wise, right? Craft is important. With her debut album on its way, and newly arrived holiday track “Single on The 25th,” a broader picture of her skills will be here soon enough. And by the way, Smith’s not all boo-hoo ballads; she’s promised that several of the new tracks are up-tempo pop. Her Artists To Watch performance of “Fingers Crossed” is as powerful as you’d expect. Introducing Ethel Cain | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 If you want emotional depth and sweeping grandeur from rock music, seek out Ethel Cain’s ‘Preacher’s Daughter.’ The singer-guitarist’s debut album crackles from the jump. K-Trap - Warm - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 “Watch what happens, watch what happens/Follow the flow, and watch the patterns.” Spend the weekend absorbing K-Trap's ‘The Last Whip II’ and you’ll have a good idea about how UK drill is reaching out around the world to gather new listeners in 2022. Armani White - BILLIE EILISH. - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023 The “it factor.” The “whole package.” Call it what you want, but when we had Armani White come through our Ctrl studio earlier this year, we were pretty blown away by his skills. So much so that we insisted he return, this time to our Artists To Watch 2023 stage. Even if you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve still probably felt the Philly rapper’s “BILLIE EILISH” rattling your coop. Crafted by July Da Producer and riding a sly rework of N.O.R.E.’s “Jewel,” it emphasizes the hop half of hip-hop - it’s impossible to stay seated while it bumps. White says Billie is a big inspiration; dude’s been a fan since the “my boy” days, and an even bigger fan of the superstar’s fashion choices. “I wanted to make something that pays homage to her creativity and playfulness while also displaying my very similar character,” he told us. Mission accomplished. Those plugged into the Philly rap scene likely know White’s 2019 project ‘Keep In Touch.’ His charismatic delivery and penchant for ambitious beat selections really came through on standout tracks “Onederful” and “Public School.” Think a little Brockhampton here, a smattering of Aminé there. Even though this was his second time performing his breakout hit for us, this new spin feels super fresh. A live drummer and more room to bounce around helps with that. Watch out, whirlwind coming through.
