This video is about Cudweed, Caterpillars, and American Ladies. This nondescript plant is called, of all things, cudweed. It has tiny flowers and around them you’ll find this cottony substance. But wait, let’s look deeper. Inside the fluffy mass there is a little caterpillar, growing bigger every day. How did he get in here? He was laid as an egg by an American Lady butterfly. American Ladies can be found throughout North America. They look like painted ladies but they have two big eye spots on their hind wings that could be used to fool predators into thinking they are bigger than they are. Like other brushfoot butterflies, the patterns on the bottoms of the wings are different from the pattern on the top, which has a connected white slash at the edge of the wing and a bunch of orange and black. They are all over this field of oakleaf fleabane, gathering nectar from the tiny blossoms. Eventually they’ll lay eggs on the cudweed and the cycle will start again. 🤍

De bosdroogbloem (Gnaphalium sylvaticum synoniem Omalotheca sylvatica) is een overblijvende plant, die behoort tot de composietenfamilie. De soort staat op de Nederlandse Rode lijst van planten als een soort die algemeen in Nederland voorkomt, maar sterk afgenomen is. De plant komt voor in Europa, Oost-Canada en Nieuw-Zeeland. De plant wordt 30-45 cm hoog, vormt een wortelstok en heeft aan de voet korte, witviltig behaarde scheuten zonder bloemen. De van boven donkergroene, weinig behaarde bladeren zijn meestal eennervig. De onderkant van de bladeren is echter witviltig behaard. De bladeren zijn 2-6 cm lang en 2-5 mm breed. De bosdroogbloem bloeit van juli tot in september met geelachtig-witte bloemen, die in langwerpige hoofdjes zitten. De hoofdjes vormen een lange eindelingse aar of trosvormige bloeiwijze. Dr Alexander N Schmidt-Lebuhn Alexander studied at the University of Göttingen, Germany, where he obtained his Ph.D. with work on the South American genus Minthostachys (Lamiaceae). After postdocs in Halle-Wittenberg and Zürich, he joined CSIRO in 2010. Alexander's main research interests are the phylogenetics, taxonomy and biogeography of Asteraceae (daisy family) and user-friendly identification tools including the application of image classification through machine learning. He has also worked on the impact of polyploidy and breeding systems on conservation management in rare plant species and contributed his phylogenetic and taxonomic expertise to biological control research conducted by his colleagues in CSIRO Health & Biosecurity. Alexander is leading the Plant Systematics and Population Genetics Team at the Australian National Herbarium in Canberra. He currently heads the Phylogenomics-Bioinformatics Working Group in GAP and CSIRO's contribution to Australian Angiosperm Tree of Life phase 1. He is on the editorial team of Capitulum, the journal of TICA, The International Compositae Alliance (i.e. the global society of daisy researchers).
