"A team more interested in praying than playing". Players "members of a Sunni fundamentalist group". Bob Woolmer's death is shrouded in mystery. Pakistan team media manager PJ Mir flees the country claiming a fatwa is issued against him. No wonder the 2007 Pakistan V Ireland game, Woolmer death, pray rather than play scandal has been hushed up. Nothing going on here. Move along. And bless the beeb for having the expertise and courage to make programmes like this. Hardly anyone else does; good journalism in my book.

Bob Woolmer Found In Jamaica Pegasus Hotel Kingston | Jamaica Bob Woolmer was an international cricketer, professional cricket coach and also a professional commentator. He played in 19 Test matches and 6 One Day Internationals for England and later coached South Africa, Warwickshire and Pakistan. Bob Woolmer Found Dead In Jamaica Pegasus Hotel Kingston | Jamaica On 18 March 2007, Woolmer was found dead in his hotel room at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica. The initial report was that Woolmer had died of a heart attack. On 22 March, Jamaican police confirmed that a murder investigation had been launched because of the circumstances of Woolmer's death, based on a report by pathologist Ere Seshaiah that Woolmer had died of asphyxia via manual strangulation. Deputy Police Commissioner Mark Shields led the investigation. On 12 June 2007, Lucius Thomas, the commissioner of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, announced that the investigation had concluded that Bob Woolmer died of natural causes, and was not murdered as indicated by the earlier pathologist's report. Three independent pathologists' reports commissioned by the police had found that the initial conclusion of manual strangulation was incorrect, and toxicology tests found no evidence of poisoning. The findings of the pathologists, and of Metropolitan Police detectives who had visited Jamaica to assist with the investigation, were reported in the weeks leading up to the announcement, which was widely expected by the time it was made. Reports suggested that Woolmer suffered from health problems including an enlarged heart and diabetes, which may have contributed to his death. On 6 November, coroner Patrick Murphy asked for further tests to be carried out on samples taken from Woolmer's body following discrepancies in the toxicology reports by forensic scientists from the Caribbean and the UK. After hearing twenty-six days of evidence, the jury at the inquest returned an open verdict, refusing to rule out the controversial strangulation theory put forward by Ere Seshaiah. The pathologist in the Caribbean who performed the autopsy on Bob Woolmer is not missed in his native village by locals who consider him a "villain". Ere Seshaiah, who established that Woolmer was murdered, is from Chintaparti village in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district - famous for Tirupati temple. But smiles freeze on the faces of its residents at the mention of Seshaiah. In an interview with Fox News, former South African cricketer Clive Rice claimed that Woolmer was murdered by organised crime groups, saying “These mafia betting syndicates do not stop at anything and they do not care who gets in their way.” Subscribe to our channel for more crime story 🤍

Noakes holding book "Woolmer On Cricket" 5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Professor Tim Noakes, co-author: "I think what is worrying many of us is the information they are releasing now, that clearly Bob let someone into his room whom he knew and the suggestion, as I read it this morning, was that it could even have been late at night. And the question is, who do you let into your room late at night? Unless it's someone very close to you and there's a problem that they want to resolve before the morning. So, I think the indication from the police investigation is, that whomever was involved were very close to Bob in some way." 6. Tight close-up of book jacket 7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Professor Tim Noakes, co-author: "He sent me an e-mail less than a week ago indicating where he would be in the next month or so and how we could contact him if we needed him. His whole attitude was very positive and had he suspected anything, I absolutely believe that he would have indicated to any one of us. And he never did that. So, if there was some connection to match-fixing I do not believe that he anticipated it, right up to his death." 8. Close-up of inscription by Bob Woolmer in book 9. Noakes sat in front of computer 10. SOUNDBITE: (English) Professor Tim Noakes, co-author: "In terms of the application of knowledge to sport and to cricket, and the use of science and the humble way in which he approached his life, and his sport, that should be commemorated for all time." 11. Noakes holding Bob Woolmer's autobiography 12. Noakes holding newspaper 13. Close-up of newspaper STORYLINE The co-author of a book with Bob Woolmer, the murdered Pakistan coach, said on Saturday he did not believe his friend's death was linked to match-fixing. Professor Tim Noakes worked with Woolmer during his time as South Africa coach and has written a forthcoming book with him on coaching. Noakes refuted any suggestions Woolmer's death had anything to do with match-fixing. "His whole attitude was very positive and had he suspected anything, I absolutely believe that he would have indicated to any one of us. And he never did that. So, if there was some connection to match-fixing I do not believe that he anticipated it, right up to his death." On Friday, police in Jamaica said Woolmer probably knew his killer - or killers - as there was no sign of forced entry. The South African also believed Woolmer may have known his assailant or assailants. "Clearly Bob let someone into his room whom he knew and the suggestion, as I read it this morning, was that it could even have been late at night. And the question is, who do you let into your room late at night?" he said. A tearful Noakes said Woolmer was a keen student of cricket and it was reflected in the way he lived his life. "In terms of the application of knowledge to sport and to cricket, and the use of science and the humble way in which he approached his life, and his sport, that should be commemorated for all time." Woolmer's body will remain in Jamaica until an inquest is held into his death, police said on Saturday. A coroner on the Caribbean island ruled the inquest, with a jury, will be held "as soon as practical" but a date had yet to be set. Police have been scouring CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) footage and other electronic records from the Kingston hotel where Woolmer was strangled. Perhaps the most dramatic day of any World Cup, as the Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer is very sadly found dead in his hotel room. And this follows a mad morning in which Freddie Flintoff's pedalo antics have been revealed in the Sunday newspapers, leading to his removal from the England team in their match against Canada. Here is how the BBC covered all this in their highlights programme. Note the slightly-too-cheery-to-be-appropriate continuity announcement, Manish Bhasin trying his best to sound sincere (and doing a good job on what must have been a very taxing day, but making one 'Colman ball': "...the death of Bob Woolmer, who died today"), Michael Vaughan attempting to keep a straight face in the toss interview when discussing the 'Fredalo' incident, the inclusion of a pre-made feature about Dwayne Smith and a very good obituary package. All in all, a very good programme, considering the constraints that the production team would have been under. It was a very shocking time for the world game (no indication of the murder investigation at this stage, of course), and this World Cup never really recovered from the shadow that this day cast. 18.3.07 All copyright remains BBC/TWI, uploaded for information purposes only.

Bob has been an integral part of the team, Bob has been one of those people who used to - before the team meetings - go out and buck up the boys, cheer up the boys, and you know he was a great instrumental force as far as motivating the team is concerned and so he will be sorely missed by the team members." 6. Various exteriors of emergency unit at University Hospital where Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer was taken 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Pervez Jamil Mir, Pakistan team spokesman: "He was fine, Bob was just fine. I mean, there were no problems, nothing whatsoever. In fact just after the game while Inzamam (ul Haq - Pakistan captain) was with the match referee, myself, Bob and a few others we were sitting outside having a chat and he seemed just perfectly good." Question: "So what did the doctors say?" Answer: "The doctors will give us a report and once they give us a report we will get to know what is the actual cause of it." Question: "What's the morale of the team like right now?" Answer: "Morale, of course morale is good as anything else but I mean something like this you can't really compare the two because this is, this is very shocking news. I mean, when you lose a game you come back to play another game, but this is one game which is gone, you can't come back." 8. Tilt-down from hotel to swimming pool 9. Close-up of member of Pakistan team management STORYLINE: Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer died in Kingston, Jamaica on Sunday after being found unconscious in his hotel room. He was 58. Pakistan team spokesman Pervez Jamil Mir said Woolmer was pronounced dead within an hour of being taken to University Hospital after being found on the floor of his room at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel. On Saturday, Woolmer's Pakistan team was eliminated from the Cricket World Cup following an embarrassing three-wicket loss to Ireland. Mass outrage at the loss in Pakistan soon turned to mourning when team officials announced that Woolmer had died. Jamaica police confirmed Woolmer was pronounced dead at 12:14 p.m. (17:14GMT) local time after being taken to hospital by ambulance. The cause of death was not immediately released. Pakistan team spokesman Pervez Jamil Mir said an autopsy would be conducted by Jamaican authorities. "The feeling of the team is very sad, very shocked," Mir said. Woolmer was a diabetic and Pakistan officials said he had complained of breathing difficulties before leaving for the World Cup in the Caribbean. But Mir said Woolmer showed no signs of ill-health following his team's shock loss to Ireland. "Bob was just fine. I mean, there were no problems, nothing whatsoever. In fact just after the game while Inzamam (ul Haq - Pakistan captain) was with the match referee, myself, Bob and a few others we were sitting outside having a chat and he seemed just perfectly good," Mir said. Woolmer played 19 test matches for England before a knee injury forced him to retire at 33. He moved to South Africa and took up coaching. He returned to England to lead Warwickshire to the county championship in 1994. Four detectives from Scotland Yard were expected to arrive in Kingston on Monday to begin reviewing the case, and assisting the Jamaican police with their investigation. Woolmer's body is still in Jamaica pending a coroner's investigation. Winston Roman, the Director of the Roman's Funeral Home in Kingston said Woolmer's body was lying in casket at the request of the Woolmer family until they are allowed to repatriate the body back to South Africa. "His body has been embalmed and the body will be refrigerated for the time that we will have the body in storage," added Roman Woolmer, who was British, was a former South Africa coach and his family are longtime residents of Cape Town.
