In human cultures in general, and perhaps particularly in Africa, the landscape is the first shrine of tradition. From the sand dunes of Mauritania to the currents of River Senegal, to the Lions of the Beninese savannah to the spirits of the forests of Gabon, this series explores the origin, the nature and the survival of deep links between several populations in West Africa and their habitat. Each episode takes us to discover an emblematic landscape: the river (Senegal), the desert (Mauritania), the forest (Gabon) and the savannah (Benin). A compass of escape and meeting which rests on two main pillars: the spectacular character of the places, often classified with the UNESCO world heritage, and the charisma of the main characters who are transmitters of their respective traditions. Top 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Benin Hello Displorers, welcome to another informative video presented by Displore. As you all know it’s always a pleasure presenting to you some interesting but lesser known facts about the beautiful countries on the African continent. In this video, we are excited to present to you some lesser known facts about the country of Benin. Officially the Republic of Benin and formerly Dahomey, Benin is a country in West Africabordered by Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, Burkina Faso to the north-west, and Niger to the north-east. The majority of its population lives on the small southern coastline of the Bight of Benin, part of the Gulf of Guinea in the northernmost tropical portion of the Atlantic Ocean. The capital of Benin is Porto-Novo, but the seat of government is in Cotonou, the country's largest city and economic capital. Benin covers an area of 114,763km2 and its population is estimated to be approximately 11.99 million people. Benin is a tropical nation, highly dependent on agriculture, and is a large exporter of cotton and palm oil. Substantial employment and income arise from subsistence farming. If you are new here welcome, be sure to subscribe and turn on notification so you don’t miss any of our daily uploads. The official language of Benin is French, with several indigenous languages such as Fon, Bariba, Yoruba and Dendi also being commonly spoken. The largest religious group in Benin is Roman Catholicism, followed closely by Islam, Vodun commonly referred to as Voodoo outside the country and Protestantism. Benin is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone, La Francophonie, the Community of Sahel–Saharan States, the African Petroleum Producers Association and the Niger Basin Authority. So, without much ado, here are op 10 things you probably didn’t know about Benin. 1. Snakes Are Worshipped in Benin In most parts of the world snakes are feared, but in Benin they are revered. Royal pythons are worshiped in Benin, especially in Ouidah. The good news is that royal pythons are not dangerous, but the bad news is that these sacred reptiles are welcomed by Beninese households where they are fed when the doors of the temple are opened at night. There is no fear when the locals welcome these slithering pythons into their living rooms like an honored guest. The Temple of Pythons is a small room of twelve square meters that houses 50 adult royal pythons. Take a picture with a python around your neck or stroke the snakes if you are scared of being strangled. Several shrines were built for offerings to the 'snake-god' Dagbe, but the biggest offerings come from the tourists who pay $1.50 to enter the Temple of the Sacred Python. 2. Benin is a Voodoo Cradle This West African country is the cradle of ‘voodoo’. The locals call it ‘Vodun’ which means ‘spirits’. The Five divine elements ruling the Earth is a main aspect of Voodoo. Their ceremonies have nothing to do with the distorted image that has been popularized in Europe and America over Hollywood and no Hollywood movies. Maybe except for one aspect which many people would find scary and uncomfortable which is the worship of serpents. The religion was initiated back in the 13th century by its founder, ancestor of the kings of Allada. Voodoo came to Brazil and Caribbean with West African slaves’ ships.Voodoo is an official religion of Benin and it is only official in one country in the world. Vodun believers coexist peacefully with Christians and Muslims, yet another country proving it is possible to live in peace one next to each other, no matter which God you believe in. 3. Some Beninese Are Scared of Taking Pictures Some people in Benin believe that photography steals a piece of the soul. You may think it is an outdated superstition, but respecting their beliefs will take you a long way. In Benin, you must always ask for permission or take pictures from afar and stay away from clear face shots. This unfounded fear has its origin in Animism and Voodoo. Personal belongings such as nail clippings, pieces of clothing, hair or blood could be used to cast a spell or a course. It isn’t a far stretch to believe that a photographic image has similar powers. So, portraits or close up pictures are very difficult to shoot. Many people, especially kids will not mind taking pictures. 4. Cotton is Gold in Benin Cotton is gold in Benin as it constitutes 80% of the country’s export. Cotton is widely used in the fashion industry, clothes in Benin are made purely from cotton. The quality of the fabrics is spectacular. You will be amazed at the quality of fabrics in Benin as they are so vibrant and colorful. Women’s fashion is especially beautiful and are mostly used to make souvenirs. 5. Benin was a Slave Coast

World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Benin in 2016 Deadliest Roads - Vietnam: 🤍 In the far north of Benin, in the heart of an arid jungle, the Baribas people make their home. Historically warriors, they have now become farmers and gain their wealth principally from the cotton market. For months, the cotton trucks move to the rhythm of the inhabitants of North Benin. Dramane and Zachari maintain the traffic from the North to the South of the country, on track or pavement, in spite of the danger. On board trucks that they have named “Titans,” or aboard battered vans, they sidle along uneven roads, at the risk of toppling over at any moment due to the several tons of cargo that weigh down their vehicles. Dramane has 24 hours to cross the country with his foot firmly on the gas, trying to reach the Cotonou harbor. Cotonou, rather than being a reference to cotton, signifies ‘The River of Death,” which is an apt term for the route that he is traveling… ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe Free Documentary Channel for free: 🤍 Join the club and become a Free Documentary Patron: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ #FreeDocumentary #Documentary #MostDangerousRoads ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Free Documentary is dedicated to bringing high-class documentaries to you on YouTube for free. In the Footsteps of the Warrior Queen is a journey to the heart of Benin's ancient Kingdom of Dahomey, where a great warrior queen, Tassi Hangbé, once led an all female army of women warriors, known as 'Amazons'. Benin's formidable lawyer and four-time presidential candidate, Marie Elise Gbedo, leads us to her country's past, where powerful women conquered and instilled fear, and questions the future of her country, where 70% of women today are victims of domestic violence. #womanking #dahomey #bbcafrica Subscribe: 🤍 Website: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Instagram: 🤍

Little is known of Benin's early history. From the 17th to the 19th century, the main political entities in the area were the Kingdom of Dahomey, along with the city-state of Porto-Novo, and a large area with many different nations to the north. This region was referred to as the Slave Coast from as early as the 17th century due to the large number of enslaved people who were shipped to the New World during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. After enslavement was abolished, France took over the country and renamed it French Dahomey. In 1960, Dahomey gained full independence from France. The sovereign state has had a tumultuous history since then, with many different democratic governments, military coups, and military governments. A Marxist–Leninist state called the People's Republic of Benin existed between 1975 and 1990. In 1991, it was replaced by the current multi-party Republic of Benin. Consider subscribing and turning on the post notification bell so you never miss out on any of our videos. Now let’s discover the people, cultures, geography, economy, and lots more of Benin. Who are the people of Benin? Despite attempts at greater national unity and integration since 1960, differences among Benin’s ethnic groups survive to a marked degree. The Fon, who make up about two-fifths of the population, live in various parts of the country and especially in Cotonou. The Yoruba, who are related to the Nigerian Yoruba, live mainly in southeastern Benin and constitute about one-eighth of Benin’s population. In the vicinity of Porto-Novo, the Goun or Gun and the Yoruba known in Pobé and Kétou as Nago, or Nagot are so intermixed as to be hardly distinguishable. Among other southern groups are various Adja peoples, including the Aizo, the Holi, and the Mina. The Bariba, the fourth largest ethnic group, comprise several subgroups and make up about one-tenth of Benin’s population. #Benin #DiscoverBenin Thanks for watching POSITIVE AFRICA, We are #Africa and we are proud to be. Early 2018 we travelled to Benin for the Hunger Project. They celebrated their 10 year anniversary in this beautiful country, working hand in hand with locals towards a sustainable end of world hunger. At the end of our trip we got 2 days of to see a bit of the country. Visiting Ganvie in lake Nokoue, and walking the route of the slaves. Which is very impressive! Of course we missed out on a lot as well, not being able to see some of the wildlife in the north. There is much more to explore! South of the Sahara Playlist: 🤍 The Kingdom of Benin, also known as the Edo Empire, was a kingdom located in the Southwestern region of what is now Nigeria. Lasting for at least 600 years under the Oba Dynasty, and around 1,000 more if we count the previous Ogiso Dynasty (likely closer to 2000 years between both the Ogisos and the Obas if we go with the longest estimates), Benin was one of the longest lasting states in West Africa. Home to a capital city which awed visitors, a system of earthworks rivaling the Great Wall of China in length, and some of Africa’s most famous works of art, this kingdom is an underappreciated gem of world history. This video is part of #SouthoftheSahara, a collaboration between history channels dedicated to building a broad collection of accessible content on the underdiscussed history of Sub-Saharan Africa. Thank you to Jabari from From Nothing for organizing the collaboration, and to both Jabari and Hidden History for helping me find some of the images.
