We have many beaver ponds on our property but this recently built one is threatening our septic system and this particular pond needs to go or at least be reduced. I break the dam and reduce the water level then install three pipes to keep the water level down. The pipes are 4" diameter PVC 20' long. I hammered metal posts into the bottom of the pond and wired the pipes to the posts so they stay in place. Over the winter we had a couple of beavers removed but there is at least one left (probably more – it is a big lodge). The beavers will continue to repair the dam after it is broken but the pipes seem to trick them. They try and clog the pipes but they are off the bottom of the pond and staggered and their attempts aren’t effective. The pipes are also perforated which is an added puzzle for the beavers. We are happy with this reduced water level. The remaining beavers are welcome to stay or go. Be careful when breaking a beaver dam. Depending on your jurisdiction you are likely liable for any flood damage you cause. In our case the water just dumps into the forest and there are numerous beaver ponds to absorb the flow of water before anything important (like the highway). Beaver dams are cool(ing the air). Subscribe and turn on notifications 🔔 so you don't miss any videos: 🤍 If you know anything about beavers, it’s probably that they build dams. These giant structures made of sticks, stones, and mud can reach heights up to 10 feet (3 meters) and lengths averaging 20 feet (6 meters) — though the biggest one ever found was significantly larger and could be seen from space. Dams completely alter the surrounding landscape, flooding the surrounding area and creating wetlands. It’s one reason beavers have often been considered pests that can cause serious damage when they build dams too close to homes or roads. But scientists have also understood beavers’ importance as “ecosystem engineers” for decades. And as the climate crisis continues to worsen, newer studies are finding that beavers play a vital role in dampening its effects — especially in areas prone to fire, drought, and even heat waves. To build a more resilient future, it might be best to look to the beavers. Thus ended up being a goofy video just trying to answer a simple question. Find more answer at 🤍 Big thanks to Jay running the camera for us this day at Maine Wildlife Management. We were installing a beaver deciever in the swamp in order to keep the beavers from building dams inside the culvert and flooding the roads. Beavers build dams that are designed to endure bad weather and high waters using logs, branches and stones. Impoundments are crucial for the species as they provide ponds as protection against predators. This advantageous skill is passed on from generation to generation and the beavers of the wet grassland of Wyoming are certainly no exception to the rule. Beavers can be a nuisance — but they might also offer some real climate benefits. David Haakenson thinks about water a lot. That’s because the farm he owns in western Washington experiences frequent, catastrophic floods. And climate change is making that trend worse. “We had floods in October. We had floods in November, December, January, February, and March,” said Haakenson, the owner of Jubilee Farm. “There's this kind of anxiety that involves — like, when you look out on the field and say, ‘Wow, I make my living off that field and now it's a lake.’” To protect Jubilee Farm, Haakenson is looking to an unlikely ally: Beavers. Because it turns out, beavers might actually offer some real protection against climate impacts like flooding and wildfires — if people can learn to live with them. #beavers #flood #climatechange #wildfire

Drought conditions are drying up a lot of water habitat so I put some drain pipes in the beaver dam in an attempt to keep the water a a level that is good for all involved.
When it rains hard in the fall, the water in small creeks in British Columbia rises and the coho start to move in from the main river. A few strategic cracks in beaver dams and they line up trying to get over. As high water also means poor fishing, it is time to try to get some footage of the battle between beavers and salmon. These scenes were from three different beaver dams on two creeks, each time late in the day in the fading light.
Beavers are great engineers whose constructions create wetlands that provide habitat for many other species. But how do we prevent them from causing damage to human property? With Skip Lisle of Beaver Deceivers International. Recorded by Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust in Damariscotta, Maine on March 24, 2022.
