Masti noz (Coquetries of Drunkenness), Zi boghi ishq (From the Garden of Love), Siminbadana dar ghussai ruzgor (A Silver Body in the Pain of the World) e Dur mashav (Do Not Go Away) (four traditional pieces, arranged by Sohiba Davlatshoeva e Aqnazar Alovatov) This video presents excerpts of a performance held by the Badakhshan Ensemble. This ensemble comes from Badakhshan, a remote area of Southeastern Tajikistan, among the high peaks of Pamir. Relative isolation contributed to keep original features to this music. Furthermore, most of the people of Badakhshan are Ismailite Shiites unlike their Sunnite neighbours, and consider the Aga Khan as their spiritual guide (imâm). The musicians of the Badakhshan ensemble live in Khorog, the capital of the region with 40.000 inhabitants, and are professional musicians. In the video the musicians are playing Dur Mashav, the last piece of a medley of four, rearranged by the two leaders of the ensemble, Aqnazar Alovatov and Sahiba Davlatshaeva. The texts of these four ghazal are drawn by poems of Divân-i Shams-i Tabriz by Mowlâna Jalâl-ud-Dîn Rûmî (Balkh, 1207-Konya, 1273). While the musicians perform Dur Mashav Sahiba Davlatshaeva dances, whirling in the Pamir style. The performance, was organized by the Intercultural Institute for Comparative Music Studies of Fondazione Giorgio Cini, in cooperation with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture – Music Initiative, and the Department of Filosofia e Beni Culturali of Univeristà Ca’ Foscari University di Venezia, and took place within the International Conference on Music, Arts, and Spirituality in Central Asia, scientific committee: Anna Contadini, Giovanni De Zorzi, Rachel Harris, Alexandre Papas. Velâyat-e Badakhšân) is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan, located in the farthest northeastern part of the country between Tajikistanand northern Pakistan. It shares a 56.5-mile (91 km) border with China - Geography of Badakhshan Province Badakhshan is primarily bordered by Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province and Khatlon Province in Tajikistan to the north and east. In the east of the province a long spur called the Wakhan Corridor extends above northern Pakistan's Chitraland Northern Areas to a border with China. The province has a total area of 44,059 square kilometres (17,011 sq mi), most of which is occupied by the Hindu Kush and Pamir mountain ranges. Badakhshan was a stopover on the ancient Silk Roadtrading path, and China has shown great interest in the province after the fall of the Taliban, helping to reconstruct roads and infrastructure. According to the World Wildlife Fund,[citation needed]Badakhshan contains temperate grasslands, savannas, and shrublands, as well as Gissaro-Alai open woodlands along the Pamir River. Common plants found in these areas include pistachio, almond, walnut, apple, juniper, and sagebrush. Montane grasslands and shrublands are existent in the province, with the Hindu Kush alpine meadow in the high mountains in the northern and southwestern regions. The Wakhan corridor contains two montane grassland and shrubland regions: the Karakoram-West Tibetan Plateau alpine steppe and in the Pamir Mountains and Kuh-e Safed Khers in Darwaz region. South of Fayzabad the terrain becomes dominated by deserts and xeric shrublands. Common vegetation includes thorny bushes, zizyphus, acacia, and Amygdatus. Paropamisus xeric woodlands can be found in the province's northwestern and central areas. Common vegetation includes almond, pistachio, willows, and sea-buckthorn. History of Badakhshan Province: The area has a long history like the rest of Afghanistan, dating to its conquering by the Achaemenid Empire and beyond. Badakhshan etymologically derives from the Middle Persian word badaxš, an official title. The suffix of the name, -ān, means the region belonged to someone with the title badaxš.[3] The territory was ruled by the Uzbek Khanate of Bukhara between the early 16th century and the mid-18th century. It was given to Ahmad Shah Durrani by Murad Beg of Bukhara after a treaty of friendship was reached in or about 1750 and became part of the Durrani Empire. It was ruled by the Durranis followed by the Barakzai dynasty, and was untouched by the British during the three Anglo-Afghan wars that were fought in the 19th and 20th centuries. It remained peaceful for about 100 years until the 1980s Soviet–Afghan War at which point the Mujahideen began a rebellion against the central Afghan government. During the 1990s, much of the area was controlled by forces loyal to Burhanuddin Rabbani and Ahmad Shah Massoud,[4] who were de facto the national government until 1996. Badakhshan was the only province that the Taliban did not conquer during their rule from 1996 to 2001. However, during the course of the wars a non-Taliban Islamic emirate was established in Badakhshan by Mawlawi Shariqi, paralleling the Islamic Revolutionary State of Afghanistan in neighboring Nuristan. Rabbani, a Badakhshan native, and Massoud, were the last remnants of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance during the peak of Taliban control in 2001. Badakhshan was thus one of the few provinces of the country that witnessed little insurgency in the Afghan wars - however during the 2010s Taliban insurgents managed to attack and take control of several districts in the province.[5] On 26 October 2015, the 7.5 Mw Hindu Kush earthquake shook northern Afghanistan with a maximum Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe). The districts of Iftal Bala, Raghistan, Kohistan, Maimai, Vekran and Manjan in Badakhshan are witness to the conflict between the Taliban, the disgruntled commanders of this group and the resistance front. Local sources confirm to AMO that at least 18 people have been killed in these clashes. Muazuddin Ahmadi, the head of information and culture of the Taliban in Badakhshan, confirmed these clashes and said: "The reported casualties regarding our forces are not true, and the operation continues in the districts of Raghistan and Iftal Bala." A source in Badakhshan provincial hospital told AMO that so far 9 bodies of Taliban have been transferred from Yaftal district to Faiz Abad provincial hospital. At the same time, local sources from Mayi district say that 7 Taliban people have been killed in this district. These sources say that four members of the resistance front were also killed in these clashes and two others were wounded. Meanwhile, one of the residents of Raghistan district, who did not want to be named, told the AMO reporter that in the last two days, the conflict between the Taliban and the forces of the resistance front in Raghistan district, led by Usman Yavani, has continued. Osman Yavani was a former member of the security forces during the republic. People under his command have been involved with the Taliban in Raghistan district since July. On the other hand, local sources say that around 200 former members of popular uprisings have now taken refuge in Tajikistan and are in contact with Usman Yavani. The government of Tajikistan has not yet said anything about this. Meanwhile, Yaftal Bala district, which is a neighbor of Raghistan district, has witnessed tension between the Taliban and one of the disgruntled Taliban commanders named Hamidullah Mujahid in the past week. Mr. Mujahid also has a history of being a member of the security forces of the Republic period. A resident of Yaftal district, who knows Hamidullah Mujahid closely, told AMO that Mr. Mujahid had joined the Taliban about four years ago. After the Taliban came to power, he was appointed as the head of the Badakhshan brigade. But recently, the Taliban dismissed him, which apparently caused his displeasure. Another source says that Mr. Mujahid used to be one of the bodyguards of Ustad Burhanuddin Rabbani, the head of the Afghan government during the Mujahideen period. According to this source, Hamidullah Mujahid is close to Maulvi Safiullah, the current commander of the Taliban for Baghlan province. A picture of Mr. Mujahid has been published on social media, showing him and his men with the flag of the republic. It is not yet known whether he has joined the resistance front or not. Maimei district also witnessed a conflict between the Taliban and the people of the resistance front. Local sources tell AMO that the forces of the Resistance Front have fled to the mountains in the Tangshio area of Maymi district, and the Taliban are present in the center of this area. According to a source in the city of Faizabad, in the clashes of the past days between the Taliban and the resistance front, both sides had casualties, but the exact number is not known. Other sources believe that the war in the Shiv region is over a gold mine and the conflicting parties are fighting to gain control of the gold mine in this area. Shamsullah, one of the residents of Karan and Manjan districts of Badakhshan, told AMO: "A few days ago, the Taliban had clashed with the forces of Commander Malik, and the war between them ended after a few hours. They have returned to the district center." Malik was also one of the former commanders of popular uprisings in Karan and Manjan, who controlled the lapis lazuli mines. He had surrendered to the Taliban before the fall of the republican system. But after a dispute with the Taliban, he has been involved with them again since a month ago. During this time, his men have attacked Taliban positions several times. So far, it is not known whether Usman Yavani, Hamidullah Mujahid and Commander Malek are in harmony or there is no contact between them. Since the return of the Taliban to power, Panjshir and Andrab, Khost and Farang districts of Baghlan province have witnessed clashes between the resistance forces and the Taliban.
