What is an Anglican?

I often get asked what the word "Anglican" means or "what is an Anglican." Anglicans are first and foremost Christians. We follow Jesus in the Anglican way which includes elements of the evangelical, catholic, and charismatic traditions. Anglicanism isn't the only way to follow Jesus, but it is a reliable way of being a Mere Christian. Anglican groups like ACNA will not strictly speaking fall under this definition but still believe it is important to trace their historical lineage back to the Church of England of old, and adhere to the sources of Anglicanism that this video looks at. Moreover, groups like the ACNA maintain ties with GAFCON and the Anglican Churches of Africa that are still in communion with Canterbury. God's Business: Anglican’s Rebranded | Losing Faith: The Anglican Church's Struggle for Relevance in a Modern World | ENDEVR Documentary from 2007 The Anglican Church has become increasingly marginalised in British society; seen by many as an echo of the lost imperial order, from the days when Britain ruled the world and Anglicanism was the creed of the British Empire, the Church now suffers from ever-declining congregations and ever-increasing bills. We examine the efforts of the Church to respond to a new world in which, in the words of the Bishop of London, “the new God is the economy”. The film explores the Alpha Project, which has spread from one London church to 160 countries and a membership of 8 million people, by exploiting the techniques of advertising, marketing and networking. Despite its troubles in the home country, the Anglican Church is becoming an increasingly international enterprise; it is growing rapidly in Africa and is second in size only to the Roman Catholic Church. While this powerful new force is even injecting new energy into the mother church in Britain, it may be that the Church of England is becoming the Church of Africa? England‘s Anglican Reformation

The English Reformation gave rise to the global Christian communion called Anglicanism: but neither immediately nor directly. This highly distinctive form of Christianity – ritualistic but nondogmatic, self-consciously moderate but staunchly nationalistic – has long been closely tied to English national identity. This lecture asks how it came to emerge over the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, tracing its roots in the Reformation and showing how political chance and the traumas of civil war led to its slow and improbable ascent to dominance. A lecture by Alec Ryrie The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: 🤍 Gresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. Australian Anglican Church splits after 'going too far to the Left'

Sky News host Andrew Bolt says something dramatic has happened in the Anglican Church – a faith ten per cent of Australians believe in. “A lot of Anglicans have thought their church has gone too far to the Left too - not just here but overseas,” he said. “And some last week broke away and set up their own, called the Diocese of the Southern Cross.” Mr Bolt said the sect swore in former Anglican Archbishop of Sydney Glenn Davies as their first bishop. He discussed the issue with Anglican priest and Institute for Spiritual Awareness Director Father Mark Durie.

Abandoned 177 Year Old Anglican Church

03.11.2021

This now abandoned Anglican Church was opened for public worship in May of 1844, it was the only known church in the area that would provide religious services to black people. Photo gallery: 🤍 While slavery may not have been popular in this area, not everyone accepted the equality of black people under the law yet. They were allowed to attend service every Sunday, but they were segregated and seated in the upper tier/balcony of the church. Unfortunately, the last church service here was over a decade ago, and there were only 6 parishioners left. Join me in this explore from early in 2021 during a short period in which I was finally able to get access to this abandoned church. Thank you to my friend GroundState Photography for the detailed history on this abandoned church. 🤍 By 2014, the financial drain of continuing to maintain an unused church led the Anglican Church’s Diocese to slate it for demolition. Local residents fought back and eventually won. Ownership was transferred to a local community group, who had/have plans to restore it into a heritage centre. A string of disasters struck shortly after. The community group’s leader died suddenly in 2017. She stood at city council and spoke up for the church, working tirelessly to ensure it would be saved. Without her influence, interest began to wane. A GoFundMe campaign was created to inject some finances, but my friend Bruce (who wrote this history) checked it before writing this post and it has only raised $25 to date. A Facebook page was created to try and keep the entire movement alive, but the last entry was August of 2019. And then, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic began shortly after, and that is where everything has completely stalled. Sadly, the church may rot before it is saved. The wood frames of all the rear doors are completely rotten and they no longer close properly. The rear wall is collapsing and raccoons and other vermin (such as urban explorers) now inhabit the interior. The former head of the Anglican Diocese of Rochester, England was recently received into the Catholic Church. Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali was once a contender to be Archbishop of Canterbury and is the most recent former Anglican leader to become Catholic. A recent Catholic convert and the former Chaplain to Queen Elizabeth II, Gavin Ashenden, joins to tell us about Bishop Michael's journey and how he was able to help him along the way. Ashenden shares what he thinks draws Anglicans to the Catholic faith and whether he believes we may see more prominent Anglicans and Anglicans in general convert. In 2017, Ashenden resigned and joined the Catholic Church 2 years later. The former chaplain to the queen discusses what led to his conversion. He is also currently in the process of becoming a Catholic priest. He explains whether Nazir-Ali is expected to go through a similar process. Having recently celebrated St. John Henry Cardinal Newman's feast day, Ashenden fills us in on how the saint continues to inspire him and others. On another note, Queen Elizabeth's doctors instructed her to take a break from public appearances for a while. Ashenden talks about what more is known on that.
