You can also sub brown sugar for some of the granulated sugar in the batter to make the sponge caramelly.

This cake can be adapted for FODMAP & Diabetics. Replace the flour with oat flour or Teff. The sugars with Truvia. They make powdered, brown, & sweetener from stevia.
