They're at it again! Those anonymous firearm experts on the Internet are saying a pistol caliber carbine (PCC) is not a good choice for a home defense gun. What do our favorite Seekers of Truth, Brownells Gun Techs™ Caleb and Steve, have to say about that? Many (though not all) PCCs are AR-15s chambered in 9mm Luger, and they are a heckuva lot of fun to shoot with FMJ "ball" ammo at the range. But self-defense pistol ammunition may perform differently when fired from a PCC. Self-defense bullets are designed to expand at very specific velocities. Bullet expansion may not be as reliable at the faster velocities generated by a longer barrel. Likewise, the powder in handgun ammunition is designed for optimal burn in short sub-6" barrels. The longer burn in a longer barrel may affect bullet performance. But how serious are these concerns? Having ANY firearm in a home-defense emergency is better than having none. If you must fire the PCC, the bullets are far less likely to over-penetrate than a high-velocity .223 / 5.56 bullet. A PCC tends to be easier to control than either a handgun or a full-power rifle. Caleb thinks an AR-15 pistol or SBR is an excellent choice for a home defense gun. The shorter pistol / SBR barrel is closer to the barrel length self-defense ammunition is designed for. So yeah, myth BUSTED. A PCC is a very good home-defense gun.
Not as loud as shotgun
I whole-heartedly agree.
Agreed. If I broke in your home, and heard shots, I don’t care what caliber it is. I’m out! Or dead…..
It depends on how much time I have, If I have time to open the gun cabinet I am grabbing my Saiga 12 gauge if not I will grab my EDC revolver.
10" 9mm pistol AR, poly lower, light weight, my go to HD gun.
Caleb had me goin', I really thought he was against PCCs for home defense, and I was thinking, "whaaaaat?" Glad he came through at the end! I reckon PCCs are great for home defense, but I'm always amazed at how many people I talk to who want an Elephant Gun on Steroids! I guess they must have magical bullets that never miss, and won't ever go through the wall & hit something- or someone- besides the Bad Guy. SMH
Anyone who has taken deer or hogs with a PCC, knows what they are capable of. There is a bullet weight rule with PCCs. The lighter bullets will gain more velocity than a heavier. That being said, a 147gr 9mm may pick up 150-200fps. Where a 115gr will step up around 300fps from a 16" barrel.
Use what you have. 1 shot 22 lr better then nothing. however I’m not going to be a happy if you fire a m107 on the other side of the apartment complex and go though my apartment.
MP 40 !!!
Get one, get 10, love them, and protect yourself.
Float like a butterfly sting like a " SCORPION" 35 rds.
30 carbine is a reasonable choice for this scenario
PCCs are great for plinking and home defense. get yourself some super sonic rounds in case you go outside the home with it you'll get some extra range. if you really feel you need more oomf get yourself a 300 blk AR pistol. if you really feel you need a lot of extra range than get yourself a proper rifle and don't use it for home defense.
I personally have an AR-9 with an 8.5” barrel I trust my life with. It’s reliable, fun and a nail driver. My standard AR’s are awesome but something about my AR-9 just has a special place in my heart.
My short-barreled CAR-15, at night, throws a muzzle flash the size of a beach ball. Can't imagine using it in a close quarters fight at night.
I agree anything that goes bang is better than nothing even a PT 22, Now to my question that advantage is there in floating you'r barrel ? will it make a difference in cal. large vs small ?.
Another nice feature of a PCC is that you can keep the magazine in the rifle but there is nothing in front of the firing pin until you cycle the firearm. Also, 9mm should not give over penetration in a hallway.
I can’t fathom how anyone could think a PCC would be poor at home defense…you’re pushing 9/40/45 out of a much longer barrel, thereby increasing your velocity…also, you are able to hold it more stable than a handgun…who is this guy who claims such nonsense…
