(c) Japan's War in Colour (2004), narrated by Brian Cox. Japan's role in World War II gets a whole new perspective in this consisting entirely of full color footage, including color films from Japan that were recently discovered. As the visuals of the world war take on a new vivid immediateness, the story of the rise of the militarists in Japan is told through the personal writings of the Japanese themselves. From the first overconfident tastes of victory, to the devastating losses that led to an unthinkable defeat amidst the ruins, the Pacific Theater of World War II is told through the Japanese's eyes. It was assumed no color films existed in Japan until the victorious U.S. forces arrived in 1945. Now you can discover the story of a nation at war from its rare color films, plus letters and diaries from those who lived through it. Almost all the material in this color documentary has been recently discovered and allows the viewer to expereince Japanese culture and events from an entirely new perspective. Subject matter includes Imperial Japanese troops in 1931 Manchuria, remarkable domestic scenes of 1930s Japan, preparation for war in 1939, and images of occupation in 1940s Shanghai.

On December 7, 1941, Japan gambled all and bombed the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbour on Hawaii. In the following months, Japanese forces rampaged across Asia, humiliating America and her allies. It looked as though she was unbeatable. But then America fought back. The War in the Pacific launched an entirely new form of naval warfare. By summer 1942 the United States ruled the waves but Japan was still undefeated on land and a powerful force in the air. The future was still far from certain. It's like Netflix for history... The two naval nations competed against each other on the world’s largest ocean and fought battles on an unprecedented scale. The surprise military strike is intended to help secure Japan's supremacy in the Eastern Pacific. It is the beginning of the Pacific War, which only comes to an end after the atomic bombs are dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the summer of 1945. The reason Japan attacked Pearl Harbor

Japan attacked the U.S Pacific Fleet at its base at Pearl Harbor on the 7th of December 1941, but what led to that decision? Why did the Japanese attack the USA? - The answer is oil. Japan had been modernising its economy throughout the 20th century and wanted to build an empire of its own. However, Japan lacked the natural resources to make it a reality, with all but 6% of its oil supply being imported. After capturing Manchuria, Japan became bogged down in a full-scale war with China in 1937 and had to look elsewhere for the resources it needed to fight. Meanwhile, the USA was slowly awakening from its isolationism. When Japan occupied French Indochina in 1941, America retaliated by freezing all Japanese assets in the states, preventing Japan from purchasing oil. Having lost 94% of its oil supply and unwilling to submit to U.S demands, Japan planned to take the oil needed by force. However, striking south into British Malaya and the Dutch East Indies would almost certainly provoke an armed U.S response. To blunt that response, Japan decided to attack the U.S Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, hoping that the U.S would negotiate peace. The attack at Pearl Harbor was a huge gamble, but one which did not pay off. Though Japan took its objectives in the Pacific and Southeast Asia, the U.S did not respond as expected. Instead of reverting to isolationism, the U.S geared up for total war and Japan's fate was sealed. IWM Live. A one-day history festival, especially for history lovers.
