On the morning of August 9th 1945, air raid sirens began to ring out in the Japanese city of Nagasaki. However, a short while later the sirens rang out again indicating that there was no danger and people began to climb out of their shelters to carry on about their daily business. Japanese spotters had only identified two United States Army Air Force B-29 bombers and they had previously flown to the city of Kokura without dropping any weapons so Japanese authorities presumed they were merely on a reconnaissance mission. Six days after the attack, Japan surrendered to the Allies bringing to a close the most destructive conflict in recorded history that ended with the first two – and so far, only - nuclear attacks in history. It was the Second World War. In this, the first of a two-part special, we are going to examine some of the key elements and incidents of what is probably the single most influential conflict in the course of Human history. The Americans attack the Gilbert Islands this week, and though they successfully take Tarawa and Makin Atolls, it is VERY costly in lives, and show that the Japanese are not going to be defeated easily. They also have a naval battle in the Solomons. Fighting continues in the Soviet Union and Italy, and an Allied conference takes place in Cairo, a prelude for a major one in Teheran next week. Crimes were committed by the Germans under the Hitlerite domination to which they allowed themselves to be subjected which find no equal in scale and wickedness with any that have darkened the human record. The wholesale massacre by systematised processes of six or seven millions of men, women, and children in the German execution camps exceeds in horror the rough-and-ready butcheries of Genghis Khan, and in scale reduces them to pigmy proportions. Deliberate extermination of whole populations was contemplated and pursued by both Germany and Russia in the Eastern war. The hideous process of bombarding open cities from the air, once started by the Germans, was repaid twenty-fold by the ever-mounting power of the Allies and found its culmination in the use of the atomic bombs which obliterated Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Hitler and his leadership team were the world's worst nightmare during the long period of Nazi policy in Germany. They became the judges and executioners of all those they considered enemies of their regime or simply unacceptable people who did not fit into their fantastic conception of the Aryan race. More than 40,000 concentration camps were created, horrible places where none of us would ever wish to find ourselves. They were the deadly prisons of millions of Jews, political opponents, prisoners of war, beggars, workers of sin and people attracted to the same gender who were deprived of their freedom for no reason, performed forced labor and were treated as slaves, ending up as just another body in a pit. Today we will get to know what the worst torments were that those poor souls suffered unjustly and we will look directly into the eyes of death, Welcome to Copernicus’s Galaxy. With the onset of Spring 1942, the war in the east was ready to begin again but the problem of supplies particularly of oil was forever a worry for the German High Command and so they planned for an offensive that if successful would not only alleviate their fuel shortage but also deny the Soviets their own fuel stocks. Part of that plan involved a city on the edge of the Volga River in eastern Ukraine. This city formerly known as Volgagrad had since been bestowed with the name of the Soviet leader himself and while few people before the war knew it even existed, in the decades since its name has adorned almost every history book as an example of what occurs when two powerful forces clash and refuse to submit to the other. Summary of Events 1939-1945 The European Theater GERMAN AGGRESSION The war in Europe began in September 1939, when Germany, under Chancellor Adolf Hitler, invaded Poland. Britain and France responded by declaring war on Germany but took little action over the following months. In 1940, Germany launched its next initiative by attacking Denmark and Norway, followed shortly thereafter by attacks on Belgium, the Netherlands, and France. All of these nations were conquered rapidly. THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN Later in the summer of 1940, Germany launched a further attack on Britain, this time exclusively from the air. The Battle of Britain was Germany’s first military failure, as the German air force, the Luftwaffe, was never able to overcome Britain’s Royal Air Force. GREECE AND NORTH AFRICA As Hitler plotted his next steps, Italy, an ally of Germany, expanded the war even further by invading Greece and North Africa. The Greek campaign was a failure, and Germany was forced to come to Italy’s assistance in early 1941. THE USSR Later in 1941, Germany began its most ambitious action yet, by invading the Soviet Union. Although the Germans initially made swift progress and advanced deep into the Russian heartland, the invasion of the USSR would prove to be the downfall of Germany’s war effort. The country was just too big, and although Russia’s initial resistance was weak, the nation’s strength and determination, combined with its brutal winters, would eventually be more than the German army could overcome. In 1943, after the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk, Germany was forced into a full-scale retreat. During the course of 1944, the Germans were slowly but steadily forced completely out of Soviet territory, after which the Russians pursued them across eastern Europe and into Germany itself in 1945. THE NORMANDY INVASION In June 1944, British and American forces launched the D-Day invasion, landing in German-occupied France via the coast of Normandy. Soon the German army was forced into retreat from that side as well. Thus, by early 1945, Allied forces were closing in on Germany from both east and west. The Soviets were the first to reach the German capital of Berlin, and Germany surrendered in May 1945, shortly after the suicide of Adolf Hitler. The Pacific Theater PEARL HARBOR The war in the Pacific began on December 7, 1941, when warplanes from Japan launched a surprise attack on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By this time, Japan had already been at war with China for several years and had seized the Chinese territory of Manchuria. After the Pearl Harbor attack, Japan began a massive campaign of expansion throughout the Southeast Asia–Pacific region. THE U.S. ENTRANCE AND BATTLE OF MIDWAY Although the Pearl Harbor attack provoked a declaration of war by the United States on Japan the very next day, it would be several months before U.S. forces would get seriously involved militarily. In late spring of 1942, the United States and Japan engaged in a series of naval battles, climaxing in the Battle of Midway on June 3–6, 1942, in which Japan suffered a catastrophic defeat. THE SOLOMON ISLANDS AND GUADALCANAL THE APPROACH TO JAPAN Fighting continued throughout the Pacific in 1944 and early 1945, including major battles at Leyte, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. By the late spring of 1945, most of Japan’s conquests had been liberated, and Allied forces were closing in on the Japanese home islands. As they neared Japan proper, the Allies began heavy bombing campaigns against major Japanese cities, including Tokyo. This process continued through the summer of 1945 until finally, in early August, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Stunned by the unexpected devastation, Japan surrendered a few days later.

Thousands of soldiers were killed in the last battles of World War II. US troops who fought in the Hürtgen Forest nicknamed it the "Death Factory." This documentary features original film from US archives that bring the battle back to life. It's estimated that as many as 30 thousand US and German soldiers were killed in fighting in the northern Eifel region of Germany in the autumn and winter of 1944 and 1945. Traces of the battle - old bunkers, munitions, trenches and tank tracks - are still visible even today. The scarred landscape bears witness to a little-known chapter of World War Two. The "Hürtgen Forest" was the last obstacle standing between US forces and the Rhine River and Ruhr. Yet the decision to advance into the thick forest in September 1944 proved to be a fatal mistake. The Americans completely miscalculated North Eifel region's rugged terrain. They became disoriented in an area the German forces, the Wehrmacht, had crisscrossed with trenches and peppered with anti-personnel mines, making the wood into a veritable fortress. Continual rain and fog, followed by snow and frigid temperatures, turned the battle into a scene of dystopian butchery. Author Ernest Hemingway spent 18 days on the front in the Hürtgen Forest. He wrote later, "It was a place where it was extremely difficult for a man to stay alive even if all he did was be there." This documentary reconstructs the stages of the battle using commentary from survivors of the clash. Among them are the well-known US photographer Tony Vaccaro, US Army veteran James K. Cullen and former Wehrmacht soldier Paul Verbeek. In addition, Hürtgen Forest residents tell of the legacy of the battle, including the threat posed by countless unexploded munitions left in the ground 75 years after the conflict in Europe ended.

The people of the Netherlands during WW2 endured loads the hardships. World War II in the Netherlands is remembered as how their big neighbour Germany invaded them. After the German invasion of the Netherlands, the German occupation of the Netherlands was a fact. During WWII Holland was occupied by Germany. That was the Dutch resistance and also collaboration. The Liberation of the Netherlands was a tough operation. Market Garden failed and because of a strike the Hunger Winter (the Dutch Famine, or Hongerwinter) occurred. Also a very high amount of Jews were rounded up and transported to the east. Many of them didn't return. It was a bitter fight for supremacy in Asia. Japan had provoked the US in the Pacific War. The Second World War now spanned the entire globe. The two naval nations competed against each other on the world’s largest ocean and fought battles on an unprecedented scale. In the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Japanese bombers destroy most of the American Pacific fleet within hours and kill 2,500 U.S. soldiers. The surprise military strike is intended to help secure Japan's supremacy in the Eastern Pacific. It is the beginning of the Pacific War, which only comes to an end after the atomic bombs are dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the summer of 1945. The Allies hit the beaches of Bougainville, largest and last of the Solomon Islands. They create and expand a beachhead there and also win battles there at sea and in the skies. In the USSSR, the Soviets are closing in on Kiev and in the south have isolated the Crimea, but in spite of that, Adolf Hitler issues a new directive that Germany's focus for the future should be in the west and the threat of an Allied invasion there. The SAD TRUTH About Women During WW2

In times of war, all the citizens of the countries involved are affected, not only the high leaders, political leaders and soldiers of the army receive the effects of a warlike confrontation. On many occasions the economy for the middle and low social strata becomes even more complicated, especially if the person who provides for the home is forced to take up arms. The Second World War in particular demanded the support of the country's women to fill positions that at that time were destined only for men. Given the lack of manpower, mothers, wives and daughters who met the necessary characteristics for the job played roles ranging from simple to complicated and dangerous, even fighting as full-fledged soldiers. Today we will talk about the positions that these brave women held during World War II and the value of their work in the different countries involved, Welcome to Copernicus’s Galaxy. Women: An essential role during WW2 Gender discrimination in all aspects has been present until today. Although women have managed to prove their ability and worth with the passage of time, they still have a long way to go. At a time when the separation of gender roles was quite clear, women were not allowed to perform outside their socially accepted work under any circumstances. At first, the government, businesses and society itself did not want to accept that women take positions that should be held by a man. They considered women to have no skills or strength. However, time was pressing. Both the country's own army and that of the allies needed weapons, food and services, which were in short supply due to the lack of manpower, so all those who were opposed to employing women to meet these needs had no choice but to swallow their old-fashioned pride. The life of the "ladies of the street" in WW2 Having to fight in hostile terrain, under constant life-threatening danger is bound to generate exorbitant levels of stress. If they do not find an escape valve, this stress could accumulate and wreak havoc on the soldiers' minds, obstructing their performance on the front line. Ugly Carnival and the Shaving of French Heads It is almost certain that no one watching this today knows the feelings caused by being occupied by a foreign military force, the horrors and humiliation possibly experienced by the citizens of different countries during the years it lasted. Yet, there is no excuse for the cruel treatment given to the women of German and French towns and villages, among others, for their supposedly dishonorable actions, without taking into account the circumstances. In which John Green teaches you about World War II, aka The Great Patriotic War, aka The Big One. So how did this war happen? And what does it mean? We've all learned the facts about World War II many times over, thanks to repeated classroom coverage, the History channel, and your grandfather (or maybe great-grandfather) showing you that Nazi bayonet he used to keep in his sock drawer and telling you a bunch of age-inappropriate stories about his harrowing war experiences. So, why did the Axis powers think forceful expansion was a good idea? (they were hungry). So why did this thing shake out in favor of the Allies? Hint: it has to do with the fact that it was a world war. Germany and Japan made some pretty serious strategic errors, such as invading Russia and attacking the United States, and those errors meant that pretty much the whole world was against them. So, find out how this worldwide alliance came together to stop the Axis expansion. All this, plus Canada finally gets the respectful treatment it deserves. Oh, and a warning: there are a few graphic images in this episode. Sensitive viewers may want to use caution, especially around the 9:15 mark. 'We Found the Rarest Planes of World War Two!' In this History Hit exclusive video, Luke Tomes and Louee Dessent travel to the Battle of Britain Airshow at Imperial War Museums Duxford to find the rarest, whackiest and most unique aircraft that saw active service in the Second World War. Starting their day at the Aircraft Restoration Company hangar, Luke and Louee are shown two incredibly rare British World War Two planes by director and pilot John Romain MBE. First, Luke sees a restored Bristol Blenheim fighter-bomber, used in the early years of the war and during the Battle of Britain, which remains the only aircraft of its kind in the world. John then takes Louee around a Western Lysander, used to rescue pilots and transport spies in occupied Europe. The Lysander is one of only three planes of its kind that remain airworthy in the world. Louee then makes his way to the Fighter Collection hangar where dozens of unique aircraft spanning both world wars are in the process of reconstruction. There he stumbles upon and half-built Fiat CR.42 Falco, an Italian fighter used across several fronts (with limited effectiveness) during the Second World War. In the meantime, Luke visits the AirSpace Museum and spots a De Havilland Mosquito Bomber suspended from the roof. Made entirely out of wood, the Mosquito was initially dismissed by the British government, yet due to its remarkable speed and exceptional manoeuvrability, the bomber soon became a crucial part of the Royal Air Force. Also resting within the AirSpace Museum is a Fairey Swordfish which catches Louee's eye. The weighty and slow biplane may look like a relic of the First World War, but it played a crucial role as a torpedo bomber during the conflict, sinking much of the Italian naval fleet at Battle of Taranto and sinking the infamous German battleship, Bismarck. For his last pick, Luke makes his way into the Battle of Britain hangar where he spots one of the weirdest-looking aircraft of the Second World War - the Cierva C30A Autogyro. Capable of flying at very slow speeds, this unique aircraft was responsible for calibrating RADAR and hence played a crucial role in defending Britain's shores. Less than 200 Autogyro's of this kind were ever constructed. To wrap things up, Louee heads to American Air Museum where he is stunned to find a B-29 Superfortress. This gigantic bomber was responsible for ending the Second World War, dropping atomic bombs on the cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima in August 1945. Aside from its size and incredibly sophisticated weapon systems, the nose of the B-29 Superfortress inspired the design of the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars. Stay until the end of the video to see some of these extremely rare and iconic planes in action!
