World War II Documentary - The Second World War is the deadliest conflict in human history. Crimes were committed by the Germans under the Hitlerite domination to which they allowed themselves to be subjected which find no equal in scale and wickedness with any that have darkened the human record. The wholesale massacre by systematised processes of six or seven millions of men, women, and children in the German execution camps exceeds in horror the rough-and-ready butcheries of Genghis Khan, and in scale reduces them to pigmy proportions. Deliberate extermination of whole populations was contemplated and pursued by both Germany and Russia in the Eastern war. The hideous process of bombarding open cities from the air, once started by the Germans, was repaid twenty-fold by the ever-mounting power of the Allies and found its culmination in the use of the atomic bombs which obliterated Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On the morning of August 9th 1945, air raid sirens began to ring out in the Japanese city of Nagasaki. However, a short while later the sirens rang out again indicating that there was no danger and people began to climb out of their shelters to carry on about their daily business. Japanese spotters had only identified two United States Army Air Force B-29 bombers and they had previously flown to the city of Kokura without dropping any weapons so Japanese authorities presumed they were merely on a reconnaissance mission. Six days after the attack, Japan surrendered to the Allies bringing to a close the most destructive conflict in recorded history that ended with the first two – and so far, only - nuclear attacks in history. It was the Second World War. In this, the first of a two-part special, we are going to examine some of the key elements and incidents of what is probably the single most influential conflict in the course of Human history. Hi everyone, I'm sorry for the very long wait in uploads, however, hopefully you will understand why, as it has taken me almost a year to research and produce this video. On September 1st, 1939, Germany declares war on Poland and throws the world into the largest conflict humanity has ever seen. I have done my best to do accurate borders, encirclements and army sizes. If you see any mistakes or inaccuraices, or if you simply just have suggestions, then let me kno in the comments and I will include them in my next video! Besides, sit back and relax, I hope that you enjoy the video!

World War II Documentary - After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, what had started as a mainly European war, had now turned into a global conflict, with America’s focus now shifting towards the Pacific War as well as The North African and Italian Campaigns. Get a Huge Discount on NordVPN’s Ultimate Security Package Here ➼ 🤍 It's risk-free with Nord's 30-day money-back guarantee! Japan's attack had backfired and far from wiping out American influence in the Pacific, they had just awoken a sleeping giant, with the subsequent Battles of the Corral sea and Midway shifting the balance of the war. The Allies would also see success in North Africa, with Erwin Rommel 'The Desert Fox' being forced off the continent, securing Egypt and in particular the Suez Canal for the British. From Africa, the Allies would be able to disrupt Axis operations in the Medditarain with the Invasions of Sicily and Italy all on the horizon. The War was finally turning in the Allies favour and it would not be long until the Axis were retreating, being pushed all the way back to their homelands. Summary of Events 1939-1945 The European Theater GERMAN AGGRESSION The war in Europe began in September 1939, when Germany, under Chancellor Adolf Hitler, invaded Poland. Britain and France responded by declaring war on Germany but took little action over the following months. In 1940, Germany launched its next initiative by attacking Denmark and Norway, followed shortly thereafter by attacks on Belgium, the Netherlands, and France. All of these nations were conquered rapidly. THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN Later in the summer of 1940, Germany launched a further attack on Britain, this time exclusively from the air. The Battle of Britain was Germany’s first military failure, as the German air force, the Luftwaffe, was never able to overcome Britain’s Royal Air Force. GREECE AND NORTH AFRICA As Hitler plotted his next steps, Italy, an ally of Germany, expanded the war even further by invading Greece and North Africa. The Greek campaign was a failure, and Germany was forced to come to Italy’s assistance in early 1941. THE USSR Later in 1941, Germany began its most ambitious action yet, by invading the Soviet Union. Although the Germans initially made swift progress and advanced deep into the Russian heartland, the invasion of the USSR would prove to be the downfall of Germany’s war effort. The country was just too big, and although Russia’s initial resistance was weak, the nation’s strength and determination, combined with its brutal winters, would eventually be more than the German army could overcome. In 1943, after the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk, Germany was forced into a full-scale retreat. During the course of 1944, the Germans were slowly but steadily forced completely out of Soviet territory, after which the Russians pursued them across eastern Europe and into Germany itself in 1945. THE NORMANDY INVASION In June 1944, British and American forces launched the D-Day invasion, landing in German-occupied France via the coast of Normandy. Soon the German army was forced into retreat from that side as well. Thus, by early 1945, Allied forces were closing in on Germany from both east and west. The Soviets were the first to reach the German capital of Berlin, and Germany surrendered in May 1945, shortly after the suicide of Adolf Hitler. The Pacific Theater PEARL HARBOR The war in the Pacific began on December 7, 1941, when warplanes from Japan launched a surprise attack on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By this time, Japan had already been at war with China for several years and had seized the Chinese territory of Manchuria. After the Pearl Harbor attack, Japan began a massive campaign of expansion throughout the Southeast Asia–Pacific region. THE U.S. ENTRANCE AND BATTLE OF MIDWAY Although the Pearl Harbor attack provoked a declaration of war by the United States on Japan the very next day, it would be several months before U.S. forces would get seriously involved militarily. In late spring of 1942, the United States and Japan engaged in a series of naval battles, climaxing in the Battle of Midway on June 3–6, 1942, in which Japan suffered a catastrophic defeat. THE SOLOMON ISLANDS AND GUADALCANAL THE APPROACH TO JAPAN Fighting continued throughout the Pacific in 1944 and early 1945, including major battles at Leyte, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. By the late spring of 1945, most of Japan’s conquests had been liberated, and Allied forces were closing in on the Japanese home islands. As they neared Japan proper, the Allies began heavy bombing campaigns against major Japanese cities, including Tokyo. This process continued through the summer of 1945 until finally, in early August, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Stunned by the unexpected devastation, Japan surrendered a few days later.

With the onset of Spring 1942, the war in the east was ready to begin again but the problem of supplies particularly of oil was forever a worry for the German High Command and so they planned for an offensive that if successful would not only alleviate their fuel shortage but also deny the Soviets their own fuel stocks. Part of that plan involved a city on the edge of the Volga River in eastern Ukraine. This city formerly known as Volgagrad had since been bestowed with the name of the Soviet leader himself and while few people before the war knew it even existed, in the decades since its name has adorned almost every history book as an example of what occurs when two powerful forces clash and refuse to submit to the other. It was a bitter fight for supremacy in Asia. Japan had provoked the US in the Pacific War. The Second World War now spanned the entire globe. The two naval nations competed against each other on the world’s largest ocean and fought battles on an unprecedented scale. In the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Japanese bombers destroy most of the American Pacific fleet within hours and kill 2,500 U.S. soldiers. The surprise military strike is intended to help secure Japan's supremacy in the Eastern Pacific. It is the beginning of the Pacific War, which only comes to an end after the atomic bombs are dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the summer of 1945. In the crucible of World War II, Germany’s most brilliant scientists raced to create an arsenal of terrifying new weapons of mass destruction, even an atomic bomb. Before the war ended, they produced a series of technological firsts that were the basis for many modern-day air and spacecraft. This documentary highlights the inventions of Wernher von Braun, Werner Heisenberg, and many others. #documentary #worldwarii #history

The Americans attack the Gilbert Islands this week, and though they successfully take Tarawa and Makin Atolls, it is VERY costly in lives, and show that the Japanese are not going to be defeated easily. They also have a naval battle in the Solomons. Fighting continues in the Soviet Union and Italy, and an Allied conference takes place in Cairo, a prelude for a major one in Teheran next week. Execution of Alfred Jodl - Hitler's Nazi General & War Criminal - Nuremberg Trials - World War 2. Alfred Jodl was born out of wedlock on the 10th of May 1890. In July 1910 Alfred Jodl joined the 4th Field Artillery Regiment of the Bavarian Army. In the following year he was assigned to the military school in Munich and in October 1912, he was promoted to lieutenant. The First World War began on the 28th of July 1914 and ended on the 11th of November 1918 when the German leaders signed the armistice in the Compiègne Forest in France. The introduction of new weapons like the machine gun and gas warfare led to the enormous losses and the war claimed the lives of ten million soldiers. Property and industry losses were catastrophic. As a result, the victorious powers imposed a series of treaties upon the defeated powers. Among the treaties, the 1919 Treaty of Versailles held Germany responsible for starting the war and liable for massive material damages. In the new Weimar Republic Alfred Jodl continued his career as a professional soldier. Alfred Jodl was significantly involved in secretly planning, reorganizing, and eventually enlarging the German army in direct violation of the Treaty of Versailles. Even after Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party came into power in January 1933, German rearmament despite its scale, remained a largely covert operation, carried out using front organizations such as glider clubs for training pilots, sporting clubs, and Nazi SA militia groups for teaching infantry combat techniques. One of the main objectives of the Nazi regime was to redraw the map of post-World War I Europe. After the Anschluss, as the annexation of the Federal State of Austria into the German Reich became known, Alfred Jodl was transferred to Linz in annexed Austria to take charge of the 44th artillery regiment as a commander. On the 23rd of August 1939, just one week before the German invasion of Poland, Adolf Hitler had appointed Jodl Chief of the Operations Staff of German Armed Forces High Command. World War 2 started on the 1st of September 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. Alfred Jodl acted as a chief of staff during the invasion of Denmark and Norway which was codenamed Operation Weserübung. Alfred Jodl was then busy drawing up plans for the invasion of the Soviet Union which became known as Operation Barbarossa. Jodl was also involved in drafting the “Commissar order” which he had signed on the 6th of June, 1941, less than 3 weeks before Operation Barbarossa began. Jodl also signed the “Commando Order” which ordered and authorized the killing of enemy special operations troops. The allied commandos were to be killed without trial, even when captured in uniform or if they attempted to surrender. On the 20th of July 1944, Claus von Stauffenberg and other conspirators attempted to assassinate Hitler. Alfred Jodl was present in the Wolf's Lair field headquarters, and he was slightly injured when the bomb exploded. Following regional surrenders of German forces in Europe, Karl Dönitz, who briefly succeeded Hitler as head of state, sent Alfred Jodl to sign the surrender which was limited to only those forces still fighting the Western Allies. However, American General Dwight Eisenhower demanded complete surrender of all German forces including those fighting in the East. If this demand had not been met, Eisenhower was prepared to seal off the Western front, preventing Germans from fleeing to the West in order to surrender, thereby leaving them in the hands of the advancing Soviet forces. Dönitz ordered Jodl to sign which he did on behalf of the German Armed Forces High Command on the 7th of May 1945 in Reims, France. After the war, Alfred Jodl was arrested by the British Troops on the 23rd of May 1945 and tried at the Nuremberg Trials which were held against representatives of the defeated Nazi Germany. On the 1st of October 1946 the International Military tribunal found Alfred Jodl guilty on all four counts and sentenced him to death by hanging. In times of war, all the citizens of the countries involved are affected, not only the high leaders, political leaders and soldiers of the army receive the effects of a warlike confrontation. On many occasions the economy for the middle and low social strata becomes even more complicated, especially if the person who provides for the home is forced to take up arms. The Second World War in particular demanded the support of the country's women to fill positions that at that time were destined only for men. Given the lack of manpower, mothers, wives and daughters who met the necessary characteristics for the job played roles ranging from simple to complicated and dangerous, even fighting as full-fledged soldiers. Today we will talk about the positions that these brave women held during World War II and the value of their work in the different countries involved, Welcome to Copernicus’s Galaxy. Women: An essential role during WW2 Gender discrimination in all aspects has been present until today. Although women have managed to prove their ability and worth with the passage of time, they still have a long way to go. At a time when the separation of gender roles was quite clear, women were not allowed to perform outside their socially accepted work under any circumstances. At first, the government, businesses and society itself did not want to accept that women take positions that should be held by a man. They considered women to have no skills or strength. However, time was pressing. Both the country's own army and that of the allies needed weapons, food and services, which were in short supply due to the lack of manpower, so all those who were opposed to employing women to meet these needs had no choice but to swallow their old-fashioned pride. The life of the "ladies of the street" in WW2 Having to fight in hostile terrain, under constant life-threatening danger is bound to generate exorbitant levels of stress. If they do not find an escape valve, this stress could accumulate and wreak havoc on the soldiers' minds, obstructing their performance on the front line. Ugly Carnival and the Shaving of French Heads It is almost certain that no one watching this today knows the feelings caused by being occupied by a foreign military force, the horrors and humiliation possibly experienced by the citizens of different countries during the years it lasted. Yet, there is no excuse for the cruel treatment given to the women of German and French towns and villages, among others, for their supposedly dishonorable actions, without taking into account the circumstances. Wilhelm Keitel was born on the 22nd of September 1882 in the village of Helmscherode, then part of the German Empire and in 1901 he joined the Prussian army as an artillery officer. The First World War began on the 28th of July 1914. Keitel, who served on the western front as a battery commander and then staff officer, was seriously wounded by a shrapnel grenade in Flanders in 1914. After his recovery, thanks to his organizational skills, he served in the Army General Staff from the spring of 1915. The First World War ended on the 11th of November 1918. In the new Weimar Republic, which was the government of Germany from 1918 to 1933, Keitel was retained in the newly created Reichswehr and played a part in organizing the paramilitary Freikorps units. In 1924, Wilhelm Keitel was transferred to the Ministry of the Reichswehr in Berlin. Keitel, then a colonel, served in the Truppenamt – an agency which concealed the existence of the proscribed German Army General Staff. Wilhelm Keitel played a crucial role in the German rearmament. Wilhelm Keitel became Hitler’s loyal “ yes-man “ willing to do everything the Führer demanded of him. In 1935 Wilhelm Keitel was appointed the head of the Armed Forces Office at the Reich Ministry of High Command was led by Wilhelm Keitel as Chief with the rank of a Reich Minister, which essentially made him the second most powerful person in the Armed Forces' hierarchy only after Hitler himself. Wilhelm Keitel also agreed with Adolf Hitler’s plans to redraw the postwar international borders which the Nazis considered unfair and illegitimate. On the 12th of March 1938, German troops entered Austria, and one day later, Austria was incorporated into Germany. Thousands turned out to greet Adolf Hitler. For his participation in the annexation, which became known as the Anschluss and was the Nazi German regime’s first act of territorial aggression and expansion, Wilhelm Keitel was awarded the Anschluss Medal. World War 2 started on the 1st of September 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. Wilhelm Keitel was involved in planning of the invasion and was fully aware of its criminal nature as mass arrests, population transfers and mass murders had been planned long before. The German invasion of France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands started on the 10th of May 1940 and became known as the Battle of France. These countries, along with France were conquered within 6 weeks. After Germany defeated France, Keitel described Hitler as “the greatest warlord of all time”. Shortly after, Wilhelm Keitel was promoted to the rank of field marshal. From April 1941, Keitel issued and signed a series of criminal orders allowing the execution of Jews, civilians and non-combatants for any reason. During the upcoming months, Wilhelm Keitel was busy drawing up plans for the invasion of the Soviet Union which became known as Operation Barbarossa. Operation Barbarossa began on Sunday the 22nd of June 1941. In September the same year, Keitel issued an order to all commanders stating that the soldiers on the Eastern Front had to use "unusual severity" to stamp out resistance and a response to a loss of one German soldier was the execution of 50 to 100 "Communists". He also drafted the "Night and Fog" decree that allowed German authorities to abduct suspected members of the resistance by night, so that they effectively vanished without a trace. In addition, Keitel also signed orders authorizing reprisals against the families of Allied volunteers. On the 20th of July 1944, Claus von Stauffenberg and other conspirators attempted to assassinate Hitler. After the bomb had exploded, Keitel personally led the wounded Hitler out of the room. Adolf Hitler committed suicide on the 30th of April 1945. On the night of the 8th of May 1945, Wilhelm Keitel signed the definitive German Instrument of Surrender which was the legal document that effected the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany on all fronts and ended World War II in Europe In the end, justice finally caught up with Keitel when he was arrested by the allies and tried at the Nuremberg Trials which were held against representatives of the defeated Nazi Germany. On the 1st of October 1946 the International Military tribunal found Wilhelm Keitel guilty on all four counts and sentenced him to death by hanging. He was 64 years old when he was executed on the 16th of October 1946. Disclaimer: All opinions and comments below are from members of the public and do not reflect the views of World History channel.
