SNMP is a standardized protocol used to collect and organise device information on a network. It does this over UDP port 161 (Traps are received on port 162). There are three versions of SNMP. - SNMPv1 which is the original version of SNMP - SNMPv2c – This is the revised version which introduced some enhancements. Most notably the use of community strings for security. You can think of a community string like a password. - SNMPv3 – Which is another improvement adding authentication and encryption. This version is much more secure than the previous versions. A device that is SNMP enabled is known as an agent. An SNMP agent has several objects that can be interacted with. Some objects are part of the industry standard, and some will be vendor-specific for this device. For example, this router will have objects for, name, uptime, interfaces, and the routing table to name just a few. Each object is assigned an object identifier or OID. The OID is a sequence of numbers, which at first glance can look like an IP address. This is used to identify the object in a file called a MIB which stands for Management Information Base. To interact with these object, we need something called a network management system or NMS. The NMS is a piece of software that can communicate with the SNMP agent. There are a few ways the NMS can speak to the agent. The first way is by using GET requests. Get message include get, getNext and getBulk. They are used to actively request information from the agent. The second way we can talk to an agent is by using SET requests. A set request is used to change a value on the agent. The last method I want to talk about is Traps and Informs. Agents use traps and informs to actively communicate with the NMS. The agent can send a trap or inform to the NMS when an event occurs on the device. Traps and informs are two different types of massage but they both do the same thing. The difference is that informs are reliable. An inform message will wait for an acknowledgement from the NMS. If it doesn’t receive one, it will resend the inform. A trap on the other hand is sent and then forgotten. Even though informs are consider reliable, both still use UDP. #ccna #cisco #networking

SNMP is one of those system management skills that people acquire by experience, stumbling through one horrid implementation after another and counting their knowledge by their scars. It’s highly useful, once you understand it. Start learning cybersecurity with CBT Nuggets. 🤍 In this video, CBT Nuggets trainer Jeremy Cioara gives a brief overview of SNMP version 1 and 2, then provides a tutorial on the configuration of SNMP version 3 on Cisco IOS devices. Learn how SNPv3 works with this MicroNugget from CBT Nuggets. SNMPv3 has been out for years and it’s super secure. But people are slow to pick it up because version 2 is just so easy, even though it lacks almost any security whatsoever. Plus, go out searching for documentation or guidance about v3 and it feels like it was written to be confusing. The history of SNMP helps explain why security was the last upgrade. SNMPv2 was really little more than a feature pack upgrade to SNMPv1, which itself was an incredible thing just for existing. People found SNMP exciting simply because there was finally an open standard to monitor devices. V2 lacked any authentication or encryption methods. It had a community value, but no other security built-in. V3 has taken a long time to get adopted because it’s a significant protocol change and it takes implementing change on a ton of different devices. But it brought with it the capability to do authentication and encryption. You can monitor the mains voltage, battery charge, etc. To correctly shut down the connected devices on power outages, it is necessary to monitor the battery charge of the UPS and, when it becomes low, send a command to shutdown the PC and/or other equipment. There are several ways to monitor the health of the UPS. This can be done locally (when it is connected to a USB or COM port), or it you can monitor UPS over the network using the SNMP protocol. The first method is more suitable for home. The second method is more suitable for offices and enterprise. UPS can be monitored via SNMP in two ways: passively (receiving SNMP traps) and actively (using a "classic" check with retrieving values of OID variables). The manufacturer of the uninterruptible power supply is not fundamental (it can be APC, Ippon, Powercom, Eaton, etc.). Each brand has models that support a particular monitoring method. We can manage proactively, and we can manage reactively. SNMP is a protocol that can help us with both. A management server will use SNMP polling to collect information from devices on our network. This builds charts and dashboards to help us evaluate the health of our network. If a device has a problem, it may even send an SNMP trap to the management server. The server can then take an appropriate action, like alert us. SNMP information is stored in a hierarchical structure called a MIB (Management Information Base). This is a collection of objects called OIDs (Object Identifiers). These describe the information that can be collected from devices, and how to interpret it. When a poll is sent, the server will also specify a community string. This string is a simple form of authentication. Unfortunately, it is stored in plan-text, both in the message and in the configuration. There are three versions of SNMP. v1 came first, and v2 extended this by adding support for 64-bit counters. v3 added real authentication and encryption. v3 is recommended in most cases. SNMP, Simple Network Management Protocol, is an Internet Standard protocol for collecting and organizing information about managed devices on IP networks and for modifying that information to change device behavior. To make it simple, #SNMP allows you to proactively view what’s going on on the devices on your network and fix issues before they become major problems. SNMP feature on a phone system allows the network administrator to use an #NMS (Network Management System) to query #PBX information and monitor PBX devices in real-time. SNMP exposes management data in the form of variables on the managed systems organized in a management information base (MIB) which describe the system status and configuration. These variables can then be remotely queried (and, in some circumstances, manipulated) by managing applications. Three significant versions of SNMP have been developed and deployed. SNMPv1 is the original version of the protocol. More recent versions, SNMPv2c and SNMPv3, feature improvements in performance, flexibility and security. Transcription: Okay so in this task, we need to enable SNMP on the routers. Here’s router 1, I’ll go into global configuration mode and use the command SNMP server community to enable SNMP. We’ve been told to use public and private as the community strings. In the real world, you wouldn’t want to do that. In the real world, you want to use something a lot more secure than public and private. But because this is a lab and we simply want to get used to using SNMP, I’ll configure SNMP with those 2 community strings. So show run shows us those 2 SNMP community strings as configured on router 1. On router 2, we’ll do something very similar. So on router 2 snmp-server community public read only snmp-server community private is going to be read write So we’ve got up two community strings configured on both routers. That’s essentially all we need to do on the routers. And now, on the PC, we should be able to use the MIB browser to interrogate the routers. So on the PC on the desktop, MIB browser, I’ll put in the IP address of the first router. The IP addresses have been configured on these devices. So show ip interface brief on router 1 shows us the IP address of router 1, so 10.1.1.1 I’m going to click on advanced, read community is going to be public, write community is going to be private. We’ve been told to use SNMP version 3 per these instructions. So I’m going to click OK and then hopefully I should be able to browse through the MIB tree until I find system, sysname. So we’ve been told to get the host name of router 1 and router 2 as the first task. We’re going to be using an SNMP get to do that, click go, should allow us to get the hostname of the router. And as you can see here, the router name is R1. If I do something similar with router 2, click go and notice the router name is R2. So it’s as simple as that to get the host name of the routers. Now we need to view the interfaces on R1. So on interfaces and I need to do that in R1. You could do something similar on R1 if you want it to you. Let’s have a look at the interface index. There are interface numbers, description, notice there are the interfaces on the router. We can confirm that by using show ip interface brief on the router again. So show ip interface brief We’ve got gigabit 0/0 0/1 0/2 loopback and VLAN 1 and there you go. It’s as simple as that to interrogate a router using SNMP and to get back information about the router. So what are the interface types? So I have type, click go. We can see copper gigabit, Ethernet, loopback and VLAN as the interface types. You could also look at other information such as maximum transmission unit, the speed of the interfaces, physical addresses, so the MAC addresses so on the router show interface gigabit 0/0 Notice the MAC address of gigabit 0/0 which is this interface over here. So SNMP allows a management station to get a lot of information about a device such as the status of interfaces. So that’s administrative statuses. Here’s operational statuses. Because we shut interfaces down, they’re showing as both administratively down and operationally down. Once again, the only interfaces enabled on the router are gigabit 0/0 and the loopback interfaces. Other interfaces are administratively down and we can see that through this interface. So let’s have a look at the routing table of router 1 so ip ip routing table Let’s look at the route destination. There are the routes in the routing table. We can confirm that again by looking at router 1’s CLI....

Managed Devices: A managed device or the network element is a part of the network that requires some form of monitoring and management e.g. routers, switches, servers, workstations, printers, UPSs, etc... SNMP Agent: The agent is a program that is packaged within the network element. Enabling the agent allows it to collect the management information database from the device locally and makes it available to the SNMP manager, when it is queried for. These agents could be standard (e.g. Net-SNMP) or specific to a vendor (e.g. HP insight agent) SNMP agent’s key functions Collects management information about its local environment Stores and retrieves management information as defined in the MIB. Signals an event to the manager. Acts as a proxy for some non–SNMP manageable network node.
