Welcome to Kings Canyon National Park which is right next to Sequoia National Park in California. We got out early to beat the crowds and the heat and we headed straight for General Grant Tree Trail in the General Grant Grove. I broke away from the family for a bit to do this quiet walk through this grove of massive Sequoia trees. It's hard to convey the scale and beauty of these massive plants. They have such majesty and almost seem like animals. They remind me a bit of Ents from Lord of the Rings. I pass people at a few different places that help show the real scale and size of them. I hope you enjoy this walk. Ep 32 - Our First Bear Encounter in the Wild #blackbearencounter #sequoianationalpark #recreateresponsibly Please Subscribe! 🤍 We were wrapping up a beautiful day in Sequoia National Park when it happened. We have had tons of luck seeing wildlife this trip but we still hadn't seen a bear, except when we were in the truck. But here were were, on the Little Baldy Trail as the sun was going down. We were alone on the trail this late in the afternoon. We saw a few hikers headed down as we were on our way up, but that was it. We enjoyed the peak of Little Baldy for about a half hour all by ourselves. We hadn't been heading down long when we saw this momma black bear with her two cubs. The event was both frightening and exhilarating. In this video, we lay out the story of that moment. Being in the wilderness comes with responsibility. Be prepared. Below is information from the National Park Service that may benefit you to know: 🤍

Zookeeper, Natalie Parchman, sheds light on her role and responsibilities, in addition to the unique nature and bright future of the Sequoia Park Zoo. "Established in 1907, Sequoia Park Zoo is the oldest zoo in California and one of the smallest accredited zoos in the country. Situated next to the magnificent old-growth redwoods of Sequoia Park, the zoo is truly a jewel in the heart of Eureka. It’s a major draw for tourists and locals, schools and families, students and researchers – anyone with an interest in animals, conservation and education." - SPZ Website. This video is about 128 Years Old Sequoia Park in the city of Eureka. It is a 67-acre wonderland next to Sequoia Park Zoo that features a large kids play area, walking and bicycle trails through an old-growth redwood forest, meadows, a large duck pond and creeks.
The Redwood Sky Walk at Sequoia Park Zoo is a self-guided interpretive experience designed to educate, inspire, and delight. As the longest sky walk in the western United States, the Redwood Sky Walk is just under ¼ mile to the end and back and reaches heights as much as 100ft above the forest floor. The Redwood Sky Walk is ADA accessible and rises approximately 1/3 of the way up the old and second growth trees in the City of Eureka’s historic Sequoia Park. Admission to the Redwood Sky Walk is included in the price of admission to the Sequoia Park Zoo and no special reservations are required. Learn more at redwoodskywalk.com.

Sequoia National Park is an American national park in the southern Sierra Nevada east of Visalia, California. The park was established on September 25, 1890, and today protects 404,064 acres (631 sq mi; 163,519 ha; 1,635 km2) of forested mountainous terrain. Encompassing a vertical relief of nearly 13,000 feet (4,000 m), the park contains the highest point in the contiguous United States, Mount Whitney, at 14,505 feet (4,421 m) above sea level. The park is south of, and contiguous with, Kings Canyon National Park; both parks are administered by the National Park Service together as the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. UNESCO designated the areas as Sequoia-Kings Canyon Biosphere Reserve in 1976.
For tips on how to create videos like this one: 🤍 Sequoia Park Zoo is located in the seaport town of Eureka, California, along the Pacific northwest coast. Set amid a mature coastal redwoods forest, this little gem of a zoo is a much beloved part of Humboldt County and the Lost Coast California region. While it may be small in size (about 7 acres), the Sequoia Park Zoo is big on physical beauty, animal care, conservation activities and education. Founded in 1907, the zoo is the oldest in California and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). While at Sequoia Park Zoo, stroll through the beautifully maintained grounds and discover over 250 animals representing 75 species in a variety of exhibits. Some of the animals you'll find include: Chilean flamingos, crested screamers, Patagonian cavies, donkeys, a yak, cottontop tamarin, spider monkeys, gibbons, scarlet Ibis, Alpacas, red pandas, and an aviary with local and exotic birds. There's also a collection of barnyard animals and a petting corral. The Sequoia Park Zoo is mostly level and easily maneuverable for families using strollers or the handicapped. Benches abound for quick breaks during your zoo tour. "Secrets of the Forest" is an indoor, interactive exhibit that displays the forest habitats of some of our native species. It also shows the delicate balance between man's activities and the impact on Humboldt County's animal life, streams, rivers and bay. A visit to the Sequoia Park Zoo is the perfect half-day excursion. I suggest you start off your visit in the morning when the animals are most active and have lunch at the zoo cafe where you'll find menu options including beef and garden burgers, chili, garlic fries, wraps, sandwiches, salads, desserts, plus an espresso bar. Eat in the indoor dining area or go outside to the picnic tables where you can take in the sights and sounds (those crested screamers really DO scream!) while enjoying your meal. Then cap off your visit by exploring the adjacent redwood forest and park, which includes a duck pond, playground equipment for the kids and 60 acres of towering coastal redwoods with easily accessible paths suitable for most ages and activity levels. For Sequoia Park Zoo information, hours and days of operation, visit: 🤍 Video Tips and How I Created this Video: I filmed this video concentrating on short shots. I spent about 2 hours at the Sequoia Park Zoo on a sunny morning in April 2013. Using my Canon VIXIA HFR300, I filmed 125 short shots ranging anywhere from 10 seconds to 90 seconds of footage each. Once home, I took those 125 short shots and selected the 64 shots I liked the best. I edited these using Cyberlink Power Director 10 editing software on my Toshiba Satellite L775 laptop. I ended up with 64 clips ranging in length from the shortest segment of 2 seconds to the longest segment of 22 seconds. The power of a "short shot" video is that it gives your video momentum and is effective in telling your video's story without boring your audience. People are used to (and expect) videos with short clips even if they don't realize that's what they're viewing. Count the number of shots the next time you watch commercials and you'll be amazed at how many the pros can fit into your average 30-second spot. Try using the "short shots" in your next video and see for yourself the power of this technique! The park is notable for its giant sequoia trees, including the General Sherman tree, the largest tree on Earth by volume. The General Sherman tree grows in the Giant Forest, which contains five of the ten largest trees in the world. The Giant Forest is connected by the Generals Highway to Kings Canyon National Park's General Grant Grove, home of the General Grant tree among other giant sequoias. The park's giant sequoia forests are part of 202,430 acres (316 sq mi; 81,921 ha; 819 km2) of old-growth forests shared by Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The parks preserve a landscape that was first cultivated by the Monachee tribe, the southern Sierra Nevada before Euro-American settlement. The national park was partially closed in September 2020 due to the Sequoia Complex wildfire, and again from mid-September through mid-December 2021 due to the KNP Complex Fire. Front country Many park visitors enter Sequoia National Park through its southern entrance near the town of Three Rivers at Ash Mountain at 1,700 ft (520 m) elevation. The lower elevations around Ash Mountain contain the only National Park Service-protected California Foothills ecosystem, consisting of blue oak woodlands, foothills chaparral, grasslands, yucca plants, and steep, mild river valleys. Seasonal weather results in a changing landscape throughout the foothills with hot summer yielding an arid landscape while spring and winter rains result in blossoming wildflowers and lush greens. The region is also home to abundant wildlife: bobcats, foxes, ground squirrels, rattlesnakes, and mule deer are commonly seen in this area, and more rarely, reclusive mountain lions and the Pacific fisher are seen as well. The last California grizzly was killed in this park in 1922 (at Horse Corral Meadow). The California Black Oak is a key transition species between the chaparral and higher elevation conifer forest. At higher elevations in the front country, between 5,500 and 9,000 feet (1,700 and 2,700 m) in elevation, the landscape becomes montane forest-dominated coniferous belt. Found here are Ponderosa, Jeffrey, sugar, and lodgepole pine trees, as well as abundant white and red fir. Found here too are the giant sequoia trees, the most massive living single-stem trees on earth. Between the trees, spring and summer snowmelts sometimes fan out to form lush, though delicate, meadows. In this region, visitors often see mule deer, Douglas squirrels, and American black bears, which sometimes break into unattended cars to eat food left by careless visitors. There are plans to reintroduce the bighorn sheep to this park.
A walk through Eureka’s Sequoia Park is a lot smoother and safer these days. #CCCFortuna Corpsmembers spent weeks clearing invasive species, leveling the broken-down path, and compacting gravel into a good as new trail. Most importantly, it offers a safe path for pedestrians to reach the duck pond, visit the playground or stop by the zoo. #CaliforniaConservationCorps #CCCtrails #CCCparks
