* Firefighters have managed to control the blaze that has ravaged areas of Seaview and Beachview in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro in the Eastern Cape. However, residents of the New Rest informal settlement have been evacuated. No loss of life has been recorded so far. * The DA has warned that should the Section 89 Independent Panel of Experts find that President Cyril Ramaphosa has no case to answer in the Phala Phala saga, it will push for the establishment of an ad hoc committee to probe the matter further. The panel is expected to hand over its report to National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula this morning. The three-member panel has been assessing whether Ramaphosa has a case to answer on constitutional grounds over the alleged theft of foreign currency at his Phala Phala in Limpopo more than two years ago. Ramaphosa allegedly concealed the theft. * Police say four people arrested in connection with the murder of seven Mgxada family members at Tantseka location, in Bityi in the Eastern Cape, will appear in court soon. It is alleged that the suspects forced their way into the homestead while preparations for the funeral of Novotile Mgxada were underway. Investigators received information about two suspects who were to appear in the Bityi Magistrate's Court on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm. One of the two suspects in the gun case then led the police to an address in Slovo Park where a shoot-out ensued. Two suspects in the family killing were wounded and a third was arrested. * The Correctional Services Department says it is investigating an incident in which an inmate stabbed convicted murderer, Janusz Walus at the Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria. The department says Walus who was wounded and admitted to the prison hospital, is in stable condition. The stabbing comes just days after the Constitutional Court ruled that Walus be released on parole by Friday. Meanwhile, members of the ANC-led tripartite alliance are today expected to lead a protest against the expected release of Walus.
