Ever year, millions of red crabs migrate across Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean to mate. Their journey from forest to coast begins in the rainy season and is protected by park rangers, who block off roads and build temporary fences along the crab's migration path. Once the crabs have mated, females will lay up to 10,000 eggs each. The INSIDER team believes that life is an adventure! Millions of red crabs begin annual migration on Christmas Island

Christmas Island's red crabs have begun their annual migration with some roads closed to allow for the crustaceans to traverse the Australian island safely. Footage shared by Parks Australia showed thousands of the red crabs crossing streets and climbing bridges, undeterred by passersby. Millions of red crabs emerge from the centre of the island for their annual migration journey to the sea to spawn on the island off the coast of Western Australia. After mating, the male crabs journey back to the jungle first as the females stay behind in the burrows for about two weeks to lay eggs. Each female crab can produce up to 100,000 eggs, which she will deposit into the ocean. Spy Crab joins thousands of Christmas Island crabs as they march to the sea. But their journey is anything but easy as the crabs have to climb fences and dodge the oncoming traffic as they cross the roads to get to the sea. Will Spy Crab make it? Clip taken from episode 3 'The Islands' of Spy in the Wild 2 that aired on Wednesday 13th May on PBS at 8/7c. You can catch the first episode at pbs.org/spyinthewild or on the PBS Video app. For those in the UK, you can catch up on the series on the BBC iPlayer here: 🤍 Spy in the Wild is back in one of the most innovative natural history series ever presented. This time it deploys over 50 ultra-realistic animatronic Spy Creatures to go undercover across every region of the world. The 4 x 60 series captures some of the most extraordinary animal behaviour ever seen, filmed from inside the animal world. Using special state-of-the-art 4k resolution “Spy Creatures” the viewer is plunged into the very heart of the extraordinary lives of over 40 remarkable animals. They reveal previously unseen behaviour as animals gather, feed, fight and breed in among some of the greatest wildlife gatherings ever witnessed. This team of hyper-real Spy Creatures not only look like the animals they film, they behave like them too. Accepted by the families, these robotic look-alikes can not only film from an intimate perspective they also interact with the animals and so gain revelatory insights into their worlds. Each episode explores a different climatic region of the world and is packed with its own menagerie of animatronic Spy Creatures and extraordinary animal subjects. They discover how the animals have adapted their behaviour to not only cope, but often flourish, wherever they live. At times, their subjects occur in incredible numbers creating astonishing gatherings, found nowhere else on earth. From the hot and humid Tropics, to the freezing Poles, the seasonal North and the world’s most spectacular Islands, this new series of Spy in the Wild will transport the audience deeper into the animal world than ever thought possible. Gigantic Robber Crabs on Christmas Island | 4K

Thievery and treachery are second nature for the world's largest land crab. This documentary explores the untold story of Christmas Island's iconic robber crabs. Armed with claws that deliver more force than a lion's bite, they can grow a metre across and are relentless in their search for food. However, the brash crustaceans have surprisingly complex private lives and often find themselves in precarious situations, whether escaping from frenzied ants or risking their life to deposit fertilised eggs into a raging ocean. To tell the story of the robber crab's life cycle, directors Moritz Katz and Braydon Moloney spent a year in the field, following their subjects in minute detail. The tragedies, trials and triumphs paint a fresh, humorous portrait of Christmas Island and its nefarious denizens.

Christmas Island Baby Red Crab Return Dec 2016

Every year on Australia's Christmas Island, 50 million red crabs leave their forest burrows and migrate on mass down to the coast to spawn into the sea. Their eggs hatch on contact with the water and then drift with the ocean currents for about a month, slowly transforming from plankton-like critters with tails into tiny crabs. If it's a good year and the ocean currents happen to bring them back to the island in time, then those that are not eaten by whale sharks clamber ashore and begin their march into the jungle, smothering everything in their way in a spectacular red carpet. Some years there are almost none, but 2016 when this video was shot was an unprecedented year, with more baby crabs returning than ever before. Join us in May every year for our 1 week photo tour of this incredible tropical paradise. Check out 🤍ChrisBrayPhotography.com for details.

🔔 Subscribe - I made this video to raise awareness of the crab migration big problem, to protect animal habitats. My video contributed to construction of the barrier and under road passages to protect the crabs during annual migration. Many viewers of the video pressed Cuban authorities to do something about that. I don't know this tourist in the car who drive over the crabs, but there is no anther road. Cubans should close this road during the migration. Crab Migration is an unusual occurrence, happens every year in May in Bay of Pigs Zapata peninsula in Cuba. More: 🤍
