Police in Los Angeles have called for calm after two officers were put on leave for shooting dead a wheelchair-bound double amputee who tried to run away from them on his stumps. Two officers from Huntington Park Police Department have been taken off duties after firing at least eight shots at Anthony Lowe Jr., a 36-year-old father-of-two. Police said they got a call on Saturday that a man was stabbed by another man in a wheelchair. Officers said when they arrived on the scene they found Mr Lowe with a butcher knife. Video footage taken by a passerby which was released online on Monday shows Mr Lowe out of his wheelchair, trying to get away from two officers using his arms to propel himself along the ground. In a statement, the department said the attending officers tried to taser Mr Lowe twice but it had failed to incapacitate him. Within seconds of a third officer arriving, they fire multiple shots, hitting Mr Lowe in the upper torso. Once he was on the ground lying on his stomach they placed him in handcuffs. He died on the scene. “The suspect attempted to throw the butcher knife at the officers again, at which time an officer involved shooting occurred,” the LA County Sheriff's Office release said. A police officer on a motorbike was taken to hospital with multiple injuries after a motorist reversed into him at high speed during a traffic stop. The suspect was arrested around two weeks later after a manhunt following the assault. * (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) * Jacksonville, Florida — On January 19, 2023, detectives from the narcotics and vice section were conducting surveillance on a known drug dealer, Brian Brightman. The detectives knew Brightman was located inside a van and an apartment complex parking lot located in the 13200 block of North Main Street. In the driver's seat of that van was the man later identified as 38-year-old Eric Nathaniel Thornton. After observing what appeared to be an illegal drug transaction being committed from the van, detectives used their vehicles to block the van's movement and then attempted to detain the occupants. The detectives were outfit in tactical uniforms that clearly identified them as police. As they approached the van, Thornton opened the driver's side door and fled on foot. Several of the detectives immediately pursued Thornton to detain him. As they were doing so, they observed that Thornton was armed with a knife in his hand. The officers gave multiple commands for Thornton to drop his knife. Instead, Thornton continues to flee while still holding the knife in his hand. It is at this point the two detectives fired multiple shots at Thornton, resulting in him falling to the ground. Immediately following the shooting, JSO detectives provided first aid on the scene as a rescue unit was called. The Rescue Unit transported Thornton to a local Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Brightman was removed from the back of the van and taken into custody. Detectives also located an eight-year-old child in the front passenger seat of the vehicle. The child was removed without harm and turned over to a family member at the scene. Two knives and two grams of fentanyl were found at the scene. * (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) * Tracy, California — On Friday, January 27, 2023, at about 1:47 pm Tracy Police Department Communication Center received a call regarding a "suspicious circumstance" between two male subjects in the area of Silvertail Place and Foxtail Way. Per caller details, one of the males was holding a knife while chasing the other individual. When the first officer arrived around 1:56 pm and contacted the knife-wielding individual, the suspect approached the officer. The suspect was given commands to stop and drop the knife. The suspect failed to follow the commands as he advanced toward the officer. The officer discharged his duty firearm, striking the individual. A large knife was recovered from the scene. Responding officers rendered first aid at the scene until emergency medical personnel from South San Joaquin County Fire Authority and American Medical Response arrived to take over patient care and transport them to an area hospital. The suspect, now identified as a 17-year-old male, is currently in serious but stable condition and is expected to survive. A young Georgia cop who claims he resigned after being reprimanded for publishing a Facebook post about the Bible and gay marriage said he felt compelled to "take a stand for God's word." Jacob Kersey, 19, was a police officer in Port Wentworth, Georgia, for less than a year when he found himself in the crosshairs of controversy earlier this month. He joined the force in May 2022 and graduated from the academy in September. Months later, despite receiving what he said were highly complimentary on-the-job reviews, he's vacated the position with the Port Wentworth Police Department he worked diligently to secure. "On January 2nd, I made a Facebook post while I was off duty about God's design for marriage," Kersey told CBN's Faithwire. "And the post simply stated that God created marriage, marriage refers to Christ in the church, and that's why there's no such thing as homosexual marriage." The former officer said this sentiment is a "deeply-held Christian belief" and one seen throughout the entirety of the Bible. But despite purportedly posting on his own time, he said he was contacted by his direct patrol supervisor on Jan. 3, and informed someone had complained about his social media post. "He stated that someone had complained, that I would need to remove the post," Kersey said. "And I stated, 'Well, that's a deeply held Christian belief of mine. I won't be able to remove it.'" The ex-cop said he was then told the situation could lead to his termination. "It wasn't like I was on a traffic stop, you know, trying to save someone ... I wasn't handing out Gospel tracks. This was when I was off-duty on my Facebook page." A sixth Memphis police officer has been placed on administrative leave in the aftermath of the violent arrest that led to Tyre Nichols' death. The officer, Preston Hemphill, was relieved of duty amid an ongoing internal investigation at the Memphis Police Department, a spokesperson confirmed to CBS News on Monday.
Police Officer, Fredrick Ole Leliman, has been sentenced to death for masterminding the brutal murder of Lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda and driver Joseph Muiruri in 2016. Fellow police officers Stephen Cheburet Morogo and Sylvia Wanjohi who were also found guilty of the murder were sentenced to 30 and 24 year jail terms respectively, while their civilian informant, Peter Ngugi, who admitted to aiding the execution unknowingly, was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Feb. 3, 2023 on The Story: In early March of 2021, reports started circulating that then-Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty had been involved in a hit-and-run crash. That claim was pretty quickly debunked — while there had been a hit-and-run, the suspect was not Hardesty. But the incident sparked an investigation at the Portland Police Bureau about who had leaked the police report that falsely named the commissioner. It ultimately identified led to the firing of officer Brian Hunzeker, then-president of the police union. But this week an arbitrator working with the city and the union decided that Hunzeker should get his job back.
