Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, addresses the general debate of the 77th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 23 September 2022). Describing the “biblical flood” that left one third of his country under water, the Prime Minister of Pakistan told the General Assembly that “the question to raise here is quite simple: why are my people paying the price of such high global warming through no fault of ours?” Addressing Member States on Friday (23 Sep), Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif stressed that his country has “no contribution” in the global warming causing climate change. “Nature has unleashed her fury on Pakistan without looking into at our carbon footprint, which is next to nothing. Our actions did not contribute to this. The dual cost of global inaction and climate injustice are having a crippling effect on both our treasury and our people right here, right now,” said Sharif. The Prime-Minister said that, as he stood in the podium, his “heart and mind have not been able to leave home.” Sharif added, “Standing here, I still feel that I am visiting one of the flood affected areas of my country. No words can describe the shock we are living through, or how the face of the country lies transformed.” The Head of Government described “40 days and 40 nights” of rain that broke “centuries of weather records, challenging everything we knew about disaster and how to manage it.” Even today, Sharif said, “huge swathes of the country are still under water, submerged in an ocean of human suffering.” According to him, “millions of climate migrants are still looking for dry land, to pitch their tents on.” “Pakistan has never seen a more stark and devastating example of the impact of global warming. Life in Pakistan has changed forever,” declared the Prime Minister. For Sharif, “one thing is very clear: what happened in Pakistan will not stay in Pakistan.” The Pakistani leader noted that, as the Secretary-General recalled in his visit earlier this month, “hotspots, like Pakistan, fall in the 10 most climate vulnerable list of countries, but emit less than 1 percent of the greenhouse gases that are burning our planet.” Sharif concluded saying that “Pakistanis are known to be exceptionally resilient people” and are fully committed to fight this battle until they have “rebuilt Pakistan to face the growing challenges of this century.” UN Web TV 🤍 Screenshot credit: UN Photo/Cia Pak #UNGA #UnitedNations

He stressed that development should be all all-inclusive, all-pervasive, universal and one that nurtures all. The Indian Prime Minister said India was moving with great speed towards its target of producing 450 gigawatts of renewable energy. He added that some 430 million people have been brought into the banking system in his country over the past seven years, and over 500 million people have access to quality health services through free treatment in hospitals. He said India is using drones to map over 600,000 villages to give people digital records of their properties which reduce disputes and give people increased access to credits and bank loans. Modi said, “Today, every sixth person in the world is Indian. When Indians make progress, it also gives an impetus to the development of the world. When India grows, the world grows. When India reforms, the world transforms.” Modi underscored the importance of science and technology innovations in India, which can make a significant contribution to the world. He noted that India is putting all its effort into vaccine development and manufacturing, despite its limited resources. He added, “I would like to inform the UNGA that India has developed the world's first DNA vaccine. And this vaccine can be administered to anyone above the age of 12. Another vaccine, an MRNA vaccine, is in the final stages of development. Indian scientists are also working on the development of a nasal vaccine for the Coronavirus.” The Indian Prime Minister said his country has resumed the process of provide vaccines to those who need it in the world and invited vaccine manufacturers to come produce their vaccines in India. Modi said the world today is facing an increased threat from regressive thinking and extremism. He warned countries using terrorism as a political tool that terrorism is an equally serious threat for them. He said, “It is absolutely essential to ensure that Afghanistan’s territory is not used to spread terrorism and for terrorist attacks. We also need to be alert and ensure that no country tries to take advantage of the delicate situation there and use it as a tool for its own selfish interests.” The Indian Prime Minister noted that people of Afghanistan, including women, children, and minorities, need help and stressed that the international community must fulfill its duty by providing them with this help. Elizabeth Truss Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, addresses the general debate of the 77th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 20-26 September 2022). British Prime Minister Liz Truss told world leaders, “the story of 2022 could have been that of an authoritarian state, rolling its tanks over the border a peaceful neighbor, and subjugating its people. Instead, it's a story of freedom fighting back, in the face of rising aggression, we've shown that we have the power to act and the resolve to see it through.” Delivering her speech at the high-level General Assembly Debate in New York today (21 Sep), the British Prime Minister reiterated, “this must be a new era, where we commit to ourselves, to our citizens and this institution that we will do whatever it takes, whatever it takes to deliver for our people and defend our values.” Prime Minister Truss also reaffirmed that her government will be “a dynamic, reliable and trustworthy partner.” She said, “together with our friends and allies around the world, we will continue to champion freedom, sovereignty and democracy. And together we can define this new era as one of hope and progress.” “The resolute international response to Ukraine has shown how we can deliver decisive collective action,” Prime Minister Truss said, adding that “the response has been built on partnerships and alliances and also on being prepared to use new instruments, unprecedented sanctions, diplomatic action, and rapid military support.” At a crucial moment in the conflict in Ukraine, the British Prime Minister pledged that the UK “will sustain or increase our military support to Ukraine for as long as it takes.” She added, “new UK weapons are arriving in Ukraine as I speak, including more MLS rockets. We will not rest until Ukraine prevails.” On economy, the British Prime Minister said, “the G7 and our likeminded partners should act as an economic NATO, collectively defending our prosperity. If the economy of a partner is being targeted by an aggressive regime, we should act to support them, all for one or one for all.” She also said, “we won't be strategically dependent on those who seek to weaponize the global economy. Instead, we're reforming our economy to get Britain moving. And we want to work with our allies, so we can all move forward together.” The British Prime Minister reiterated, “the free world needs this economic strength and resilience to push back against authoritarian aggression, and win this new era of strategic competition.” The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister and Minister for National Security and Intelligence, Child Poverty Reduction, and Ministerial Services of New Zealand, addresses the general debate of the 77th Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 20 - 26 September 2022). Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern told world leaders, “Russia’s war is illegal. It is immoral. It is a direct attack on the UN Charter and the international rules-based system and everything that this community should stand for.” Delivering her speech at the high-level debate of the General Assembly today (23 Sep) in New York, Prime Minister Ardern said, “Putin’s suggestion that it could at any point deploy further weapons that it has at their disposal reveals the false narrative that they have based their invasion on.” She asked “what country who claims to be a liberator, threatens to annihilate the very civilians they claim to liberate? This war is based on a lie.” The Prime Minister also said that in March, when the world most needed the UN Security Council to act in the defense of international peace and security, it could not, adding that the Council did not fulfil its mandate because of one permanent member who was willing to abuse its privileged position. She said, “for the United Nations to maintain its relevancy, and ensure that it truly is the voice of the breadth of countries it represents, the veto must be abolished, and Permanent Members must exercise their responsibility for the benefit of international peace and security, rather than the pursuit of national interest.” Prime Minister Ardern also said that New Zealand is a nation that is both of the Pacific, and within it. It was in its region that these weapons of war were tested. Those tests have left a mark on the people, lands and waters of its home. She reiterated, “nuclear weapons do not make us safer. There will be those who agree but believe it is simply too hard to rid ourselves of nuclear weapons at this juncture.” The Prime Minister continued, “there is no question that nuclear disarmament is an enormous challenge. But if given the choice, and we are being given a choice, surely we would choose the challenge of disarmament than the consequences of a failed strategy of weapons-based deterrence.” UN Web TV 🤍 Screenshot credit: UN Photo/Cia Pak #UNGA #UnitedNations

Imran Khan, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, addresses the general debate of the 74th Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 24 – 30 September 2019). Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan today warned that what is going to happen in Kashmir when the curfew is lifted “will be a bloodbath.” Addressing the General Assembly today (27 Sep) in New York, Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan said, “when a nuclear armed country fights to the end, it will have consequences far beyond the borders.” He added, "It will have consequences for the world, which is why I repeat I am here, because I’m warning you, it is not a threat, it’s a fair worry that where are we heading?” On Kashmir, Khan further asked, “what is the world community going to do? Is it going to appease a market of 1.2 billion, or is it going to stand up for justice and humanity?” The Prime Minister reiterated, “I’ve come here to tell the UN, you got to, this is a test for the United Nations. You are the one who guaranteed the people of Kashmir the right of self-determination. They are suffering because of that and this is the time.” On Islamophobia, Khan said, “Islamophobia since 911 has grown at a pace that is alarming. Human communities live together. There should be understanding amongst them. But Islamophobia is creating a division. Muslim women wearing hijab is becoming an issue, it’s becoming an issue in some country, hijab is some sort of weapon.” He also said, “this Islamic terrorism, Islamic radicalism, and sadly used by leaders, this has been the main reason for Islamophobia, and it has caused pain among Muslims.” The Prime Minister continued, “we, in Muslim countries watch this Islamophobia travelling abroad and it’s getting worse. And may I just say Mr. President that in European countries, it is marginalizing Muslim communities. And we all know that marginalization leads to radicalization.” Khan also noted the importance of combating climate change and corruption. - For All On-Demand Addresses in English: 🤍 For All On-Demand Addresses in the Language of the Speaker: 🤍 #UnitedNations #UNGA #UNGA74

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, talked about Kashmir during his UN General Assembly speech days after meeting with Prime Minister Modi. Erdogan said that both India and Pakistan haven't been able to establish peace over Kashmir since 1947. This is not the first time that Erdogan has mentioned Kashmir in his UNGA speech. However, unlike the past, Erdogan this time skipped the mention of UNSC resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir. Mexico wants PM Modi to mediate between Russia and Ukraine to end the war. At the UNSC, Mexico proposed setting up a peace committee that would include PM Modi, Pope Francis, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
