Are Electric Plasma Jet Engines Actually Possible? Aircrafts today burn up a lot of fossil fuels, and switching to alternatives hasn't always been feasible. The world is definitely eager to move on to better options, and some time ago, we talked about China's solution to that on our channel. It was the electric plasma jet engine! A plasma propulsion engine is a type of electric propulsion that generates thrust from a quasi-neutral plasma. This is different from other ion thruster engines, which generate thrust through extracting an ion current from the plasma source, which is then accelerated to high velocities using grids or anodes. There are four types of plasma engines; Helicon plasma thrusters, Magneto-plasma-dynamic thrusters, Pulsed inductive thrusters, and Electrodeless plasma thrusters. Researchers from the Wuhan University of Technology claimed to have created a plasma thruster engine known as ‘Electric Plasma Jet Engine’ that works in both air and vacuum by compressing air and electricity. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, aircraft account for 12 percent of US transportation emissions and are responsible for 3 percent of the country's total greenhouse gas production. In 2018, aviation caused 2.4% of total carbon emissions worldwide. The researchers said that if air jets become practical, they could reduce fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Ad Astra Rocket Company of Texas is in the final stages of developing a highly efficient Plasma Rocket for low Earth orbit and interplanetary use! A cheaper way to move spaceships around Earth orbit, the moon and the outer planets! 39 days to Mars? Sign me up! A U.S. based rocket propulsion company is developing an engine that could take humans to Mars in just 39 days, and it has funding from Nasa to accomplish the task. A spacecraft normally takes several months to reach Mars. According to Franklin Chang Diaz, CEO of the Ad Astra Rocket Company of Texas, the new rocket engine technology has the potential to be revolutionary. "This is like no other rocket that you may have seen in the past, It is a plasma rocket. The Vasimr Rocket is not used for launching things, It is used for things already in orbit, which we call. 'in space propulsion'," said Chang Diaz, also a former astronaut. The Vasimr engine works by heating plasma, an electrically charged gas, to extreme temperatures using radio waves. Strong magnetic fields then funnel this plasma out of the back of the engine. This in turn, creates thrust, helping to propel the engine at extreme speeds. Nasa liked this technology and offered a grant to the Ad Astra Rocket Company as part of its 12 Next Space Technologys for Exploration Partnerships program. "The partnership [with Nasa] will advance the Vasimr engine to a technology readiness level greater than 5 - a step closer to space flight," the company announced in a statement. Over a three-year period, Nasa will give the Texas-based company about 10 million dollars to fully develop a new version of the Vasimr engine. According to the company, they could save thousands of gallons of rocket fuel by using the Vasimr engine, which would save around 20 million dollars in one year. in 2005, Houston Rocket Company, Ad Astra began the processes of designing a more efficient rocket engine for space flight. 15 years later, their VASMIR Plasma Rocket Engine is now entering the final stages of NASA's Technology Readiness Testing, which could open up new gateways for space travel. CEO and 7 time NASA Space flight veteran, Franklin Chang-Diaz and his Daughter, who happens to be Ad Astra's Global Communications Specialist, Miranda Chang, describe how the engine works, some of it's applications, and discuss their reasoning for wanting to launch such a massive project. The VASMIR works by generating plasma out of a gas and super-heating it to temperatures that rival the sun, then directing that energy down a magnetic pipe and explodes out of the exhaust. The engine propulsion is generated by electricity, so it in effect could be powered by Solar panels, a battery, or something a thermonuclear reactor. One advantage the rocket has over a traditional rocket is that it's fuel source would take up much less space and allow for crews to travel with more cargo and fly further due to not being weighed down by the combustion fuel. It could navigate the globe without consuming fossil fuels and instead be powered by sustainable, clean energy. While that sounds like the vision of someone like Elon Musk, it’s actually a concept proposed by a professor at Wuhan How does jet propulsion work? An electric plasma jet engine sounds exciting, but could it really take the place of the gas guzzling jets we have today? Airplanes around the world now use a mix of kerosene and petroleum which is ignited after air compression. The heated gas expands with an explosive force that provides a power thrust to the jet engine. The resulting emissions are also thrown out the back of an engine. Plasma, the universe is full of it Plasma - in case you didn’t know - is the fourth state of matter after solids, liquids, and gases. It’s almost like a gas composed of charged ions, except that it doesn’t have a fixed volume or shape. NASA is already using ion thrust technology Plasma is not as dense as the other states of matter. Nearly all energy loss in today’s machinery exists in the form of heat. Others include unwanted mechanical and electrical vibrations that work against the proper function of the system, but are insignificant when compared to the energy lost in the form of heat and unburnt fuel. We have taken care of these issues with the help of Nikola Tesla. The greatest forms of heat energy loss include friction from the many thousands of moving parts in the engine. We have reduced all moving parts in the engine to one. Normally heat is viewed as a bad thing. This is no longer perceived as true. Plasma, the fourth state of matter, is a relatively new field of study whose boundaries are being expanded by studies made possible by the GEET engine technology invented by Paul Pantone. GEET is based on a self-generated low temperature plasma field. Since the advent of GEET devices, Paul has discovered 181 new phenomena. There are at least eight “Unidentified Fields of Energy” around the GEET that have been observed. The lack of a common terminology and methodology makes it difficult to validate and replicate new discoveries. Here are a couple of fundamental observations that are being studied. When trying to locate where the Reactor Rod is positioned while running, one uses a hand held digital thermometer. When the Thermometer reads it is the hottest, this indicates the center of the Reactor Rod. This is a false reading. Even though the Thermometer indicates a hot spot, it is not the hottest spot. However, something “inside” the reaction chamber is causing the false reading that allows us to determine that the Rod is at that exact location. Another strange observation is the “Auric Field”. Once a Reactor Rod is used for thirty minutes it holds a signature to indicate if the fuel was matched to the Reactor Rod for maximum efficiency. One of the tests to validate the correct length, is by using a compass. When the Rod is “broke in” the compass will show it has a North and South. Maybe it does, or could be it really doesn’t?
