An ordinary seaman (OS) has duties and responsibilities related to deck jobs. Subscribe: 🤍 OS is a person who is assigned deck jobs on ships. The position of the ordinary seaman (OS) is an apprenticeship to become an able seaman. The ordinary seaman usually works for 1-2 years gaining “sea time” and then he/she gets a promotion as an able seaman. An ordinary seaman (OS) performs a variety of duties concerned with the operation and upkeep of deck department areas and equipment. The duties include cleaning the ship, taking care of the paint-work, taking the duty of the helm of the ship, and standing guard whenever the situation demands. The duties vary with the type of ship, the type of voyage, the number of crewmembers, the weather, the supervisor, and other variables. The ordinary seaman should be fit because many duties are physically demanding. Duties include washing, cleaning, painting the deck, performing maintenance on the gear that handles cargo, as well as running and rigging gear, and launching and recovering the lifeboats and life rafts. The ordinary seaman will also handle ropes (proficiency at splicing, knotting is required to become an able seaman), wires, and make sure that any cargo onboard is secure. It has to be noted that an ordinary seaman’s profession is something that is well appreciated and admired.
